  • Welcome to a new series - Crossing the Trent. We're in Nottinghamshire on the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway (LD&ECR) - later Great Central Railway (GCR) and latterly LNER (London North Eastern Railway). In this first episode we’re on the west side of the River Trent. Before crossing, we can look around the remains of the Fledborough railway station, which opened in 1896 on the line from Chesterfield Market Place, Langwith Junction and Lincoln.
Both platforms are still present, along with the station house and cottage on the road above. Although these days largely consumed by nature, we can also see the goods platform at the rear of the station - including the toilets and building debris.
    The station closed in 1955.
Next to the station, we can see the railway yard that opened in around 1960 on the entrance to the new High Marnham Power station. Now demolished, the tracks have gone, but you can see the large expanse of ballast.
The line east from High Marnham over the Fledborough viaduct was closed in 1980 after a train derailed at the other side of the viaduct. The power station was open until 1983 and continued to be served by trains from the western entrance until that time.
Here’s a stat for you - High Marnham power station burned over 10 thousand tonnes of coal per day.

Clifton on Trent signal box had an unusual DW sign on the front window just near the door . It was to signify that the box had a trackdetonation system where the lever in the box would deploy a detonation cap on the rail to warn drivers of men at work

The track is still in from Marnham junction for testing . In its hey day trains ran from chesterfield to Lincoln stopping at all the stations . It ran into chesterfield market on the top of the Gc and the midland the only town in England to have 3 lines on top of each other . I use to ride the pick up daily from fledborough to skellingthorpe and back usually an old b12 or jinty or standard class 4

    Hi
I wish I had watched this video before I went to Fledburgh a few weeks back, I drove down to the church looking for somewhere to park 🤣did a quick video though for my Trent Playlist but having watched your videos in reverse order, I’ll be going back to do the proper walk, now o know where to park.
Have finally subscribed after watching many of your videos, I think the first one was at Swanwick 👍well done for a nice paced set of videos on the viaduct, now looking at your back catalogue 👍

Nice one. It's a great walk isn't it.
That church is a bit of a distance from the railway though isn't it?

@@WobblyRunner yes I didn’t realise how far it was 🤣🤣🤣it was in flood at the time, so I saw the viaduct on the middle of fields of the Trent 🤗

I remember exploring those old sidings and the cooling towers years back with my youngest stepkid, you'd be surprised how entertaining an echoey cooling tower is to a noisy seven year-old. Ditto Willington.
Anyway, fun-fact, because of the Trent valley power stations there was a period when roughly 10% of the UKs entire coal production passed through Shirebrook Junction, making it a strategically important place during the 84/85 miner's strike when most of the staff in the area refused to have anything to do with coal trains.
Looking forward to the next installment. 👍

The link to Berlin was because a junker 88 was shot down there they were after the viaduct because it carried war material to Lincolnshire airfields . Trains ran buffer to buffer in those days , hence why the rails are buried at skellingthorpe and the bridges all left in and maintained including the viaduct , made so by the ministry of defence stepping in during its closure telling br you will keep it maintained if you close it , if ever there’s need to supply the airbases ever again it will be reopened , hence why the track bed was left down and rails left in at skelly crossing so they still have right of way without having to ever re apply for planning

Great info. I suppose in that case, we hope not to have to see the line brought back to life.

High Marnham Yard - I recall it was in use until 2012 -2013. I did some work for NR on High Output System (HOPS) factory trains for Great Western electrification. These factory trains built by Windhoff in Germany, came via Channel Tunnel to Dollands Moor, then transported for assembly in Marnham Yard and tested on the Tuxford test track.
There is an interesting book 'The Lancashire Derbyshire and East Coast Railway' by Chris Booth. I have Vol2, Langwith Junc to Lincoln and proposed route to Sutton-on-sea - ISBN-13: 978-1-78155-660-3. Vol1 will cover Clowne.

A good watch, the platforms are very impressive later on in the winter, but still plenty to see at this time of the year. Great spot to find the goods platform!!! The last time I was there I got down onto the sidings, so if there is a fence up its been put up since Spring 2022.

Fence from the road. One of those big green things. The rest of the way around seemed to be just thick bushes. The type you just dont bother attempting 😄

Great video Paul. Last time i went down the test track to the end was 2015. I may be wrong but i think it continued further into the power sidings then . The yard had all gone then

I think it was more like 2003 rather than 1983 when the power station closed.
