I really wish I'd known about the electro stuff coming out of Los Angeles. I had no clue who Egyptian Lover was. The first records I heard with the 808 were Planet Rock as well as the S.O.S. Band records produced by Jam and Lewis. The first time I noticed the long kick drum was on Peter Piper. I didn't know what was making those sounds. On Peter Piper, I thought it was the bassline because it was in tune with the bells
Great video of Hip Hop history. I always heard the "Minneapolis Sound" in the Egyptian Lover's music. I just did not know it was that intentional. I was just listening to some of his stuff this week after not hearing it for years, and was thinking (again) this reminds me of Morris Day. I also have music that even the artist created the music wondered how I have stuff that shouldn't be out. Maybe the folks my mom was around had excess. In 1979 I already knew about Africa Bambaataa and Kool Herc. I was such a kid I did think Kraftwerk was some New York shit, until I finally got a record and was bugged out. Writing this made me remember that Afrika Bambaataa had a little sound from the parties my was at in the 70's and what I was battling to in the early 80's. I'll ask my mom if she remembers who any of the djs where at those parties.
