2021 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX Review

  • The Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX offers a sports-touring package that bears some resemblance to the brand's WSBK winning ZX-10R, but in reality is it's own motorcycle, with a focus on comfort, long distance touring and of course built around a rewarding four-cylinder.
    Priced at $19k on the road as tested, the Ninja 1000 SX is a great blend of technology and value, with traditional suspension, quality of life features like cruise control, adjustable screen and levers, an eye catching dash and easy to use electronics system.
    If you're interested in racking up the miles, but don't want to go full tourer, the Ninja 1000 could be the bike you're looking for, being suitable for everyday riding when you don't want to load up the luggage or pillion and head away somewhere distant.
    The super smooth engine also really benefits from a quickshifter, making for an extra engaging and fun experience, with the use of the clutch largely optional once moving, well suiting the linear four.
    To demo ride the 2021 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX contact or head in to MotoHub Motorcycles in Castle Hill in Sydney. A big thanks to them for letting me quick test the bike! Their details are below:

    For anyone interested in this bike and long term view, don't bother.... with any other bike. If you're looking for an allrounder that does everything really well, then just go for it.
    The 2020>Ninja SX is a joy to behold and even more joyous to ride. Whether commuting in the worst of conditions (and let's face it, here in the UK we call that weather), or touring with the panniers or blasting through the curves, the almost electric smoothness of the engine and ride are sublime.
    A year on and I still smile just knowing she's in the garage waiting for me.

      Yep it's a great system, and on the road, heaps of extra bite there isn't necessarily a good thing, where having plenty of power and modulation gets the job done safely.

    Coincidentally, I got to test ride this same bike about a week ago. I found it to have a super smooth power delivery, with lots of torque in every gear, excellent quickshifter, very good display, and the comfort for my 6’ 1” frame was very good. I thought it was an excellent value here in the U.S. where it retails for less than $13k before State sales taxes.

    I test rode this bike this past weekend at a Kawasaki event near me and I have to say it's a VERY comfortable bike! After some time riding I did feel like my butt was on fire and that's probably from the exhaust but overall I was very impressed with the smoothness of the quick shifter and power of the engine. I'm planning on buying one hopefully soon.

I actually didn’t know it had a quickshifter, I paused your video at about the 3/4 mark and then re-started it from the beginning as I was watching the gear indicator and your left hand. Just know that the quick shifter has a couple of "rules" also mentioned in the owners manual, for example, it doesn't work well under around 2500 revs and throttle must be off when downshifting, throttle should be on when upshifting

    • @marcusgeorge1825

I’m the type of guy who enjoys reading owners manuals as they contain stuff that is good to know for the inexperienced, and can also be a bit entertaining for the experienced. I usually have a chuckle with the stuff like ensuring you engage the clutch fully before shifting into 1st gear and applying a bit of throttle before you slowly release the clutch to get underway. Great review of a great bike, Kris! I owned one from 2017 to this time last year (a victim of Covid in some respects) and can honestly say that, despite the weight, it is probably the easiest bike I have ridden to date. Feet-up U-turns, dawdling along at 5mph, sportsbike chasing at ...uhm ... slightly faster haha, two-up touring in Wales in the rain. My gf was totally new to biking and can confirm that the pillion pad is far more comfortable than it looks. It is slightly top-heavy imo and this caught me out a couple of times whilst at a standstill and I actually managed to drop the thing! So a slight worry that the seat height has apparently increased. I'm 5'8" (1m72) so that might mean buying the low seat option; why so flippin' expensive?!?! Other than that, I'll definitely buy another one - unless Suzuki's new GT gets my hard-earned? Always been with Kawasaki though so ... Thanks again!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers! I definitely think that's the thing about these bikes, people assume they must be heavy of unwieldy, but in actual fact they are very easy to handle. Like you mentioned a little top heavy which can bite you once they get a bit far over, but generally they can be easier to handle than lighter bikes for low speed and maneuvering. It'll be interesting to see how that new GT stacks up really!

After test riding both there was no doubt in my mind and I got the Kawa. And now the funny thing: I get compliments on its looks practically every time I am out on the roads in this motorcycle crazy country, which is France, and I am always surprised - and pleased, of course. It definitely looks better in real life than on pictures although I liked the way MJK made it look when he stood behind it and gave the review.

    An aftermarket system doesn't just clear up in terms of beauty, but power and even more important, weight. Akro claims a 9.6kg weight savings for the full exhaust system, which means you go down to about 225 wet, and I believe something like 215 without panniers. Thats a 4.5~% weight savings, quite significant!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true, as much as I love the sound of the aftermarket exhausts, I tend to think the big performance benefit is actually weight saved rather than power or torque, unless you get it professionally tuned. Plus that's a LOT of weight as you note, there's not many places you can remove that much, that easily.

    Kris, thanks for the detailed review. The ergonomics video was informative on as well. Does this bike feel heavy in slow speeds & stop and go traffic? How is the heat dissipation? Do you feel your body weight on the wrists given its rider triangle? Sorry for the many questions. Thx

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was actually really surprised how light the bike felt at very slow crawling speeds, it's very easy to maneuver like that. I didn't find heat an issue, but ideally I'd like to test in summer and get stuck in traffic as a really harsh test, as that tends to be where you'll notice it. I found the seating position quite relaxed, as those bars are on risers which lift them up quite a way. Most of your weight is through the seat and pegs.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ninja 1000 is a more definitely touring orientated than the MT-10, while still being fairly sporty, where the R 1250 has a bit more of the adventure-touring ergonomic to it, so a bit more relaxed as far as the seating position. The R 1250 definitely has the edge if you like exploring the dirt when the occasion arises, although if it's just unsealed roads you can probably get away with any of the three, it's just nice to feel a bit more motivated to explore on a bike you know is a little more suited to it.

      I always recommend going something smaller and lighter if it's your very first bike, as I think it can be a little more forgiving which makes learning easier, safer and hopefully more fun. Being older helps with the maturity of not doing as many of the silly things that seem such a good idea as a teenager, but a bigger and heavier bike is a bit more of a handful, plus there's heaps of power there!

If you've got that experience under your belt and are happy riding the lighter bike you should be ok. These tourers are very well balanced, and certainly the weight disappears once you're moving. I wouldn't have said they were any more challenging than the 200 kg superbikes if I'm honest, if anything the upright seating position helps there. If you take it easy and are just mindful of the weight when you first get the bike, I don't think it should be a problem.

    Great review chris! Wondering how it goes in heavy day to day traffic, aka commuting?

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't get really really bad crawling traffic, but for regular traffic I was impressed how well it handled. The weight of the bike wasn't even something I thought about and the fueling and brakes made it easy, even just rolling along at very low speeds, or needing to start and stop. A lot of the tourers do that well, but you still know you're on a big tourer, where I didn't feel like I was on a big bike on the Ninja 1000.

    • @nickthequick
      @nickthequick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      She goes very well, and I know because I live in Paris and it doesn't get much worse than that (maybe in Mumbai and places like that ...). Also the mirrors fold in completely and very easily, so if you're not carrying the panniers and like to split lanes, then just go ahead and do it.

  • @nickthequick
    @nickthequick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice and fair review despite a bit of repetition (sorry, had to get that in) so "thumbs up".
    I have now done around 10 thousand kilometers on my own and I have to add, that this bike is a bit of a Jekyll/Hyde bike. Like you said, when you ride her like a sane person would, treating her as a tourer/commuter, and keeping the revs under 6000, she is sweet and treats you gently, giving you lots of confidence. But when you start running the gears out from there and towards the limit range she becomes an intercontinental ballistic missile, and you better lean forward, duck down and hold on tight.
    I find the brakes very confidence inspiring also when you go fast into a curve and find the radius becoming smaller than you thought it would; the front brake is very progressive in its bite. Some call that "soggy" I think its better than the immediate hard bite that you get on certain bikes.
    The display has a sport setting (shows lean angle etc.) which I never use and I have also never used the Kawasaki Ridology app, I think Kawasaki should leave that kind of stuff to BMW Tractor riders ... ;o)
    PS: On my channel I have a couple of videos from a tour I did in Spain and Portugal when she was brand new (mine is called "Ziggy")

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep sorry about that, got a interrupted midway through and ended up really going over things multiple times!
      I think that's a nice way to tune these bikes too, makes them more accessible for everyday use and I think the same way about the brakes. The most powerful brakes with crazy bite aren't necessarily the ones I'm going to enjoy using the most, especially on the road.
      I liked seeing the app and being able to sit and go through settings next to the bike while having a coffee the first time I tested one with it, but I do think most of these bikes can do without, unless you've got electronics which have so many settings you need to refer to the manual for them. Obviously some riders really like that kind of thing, but I prefer the systems where a few button pushes and you're set.
      I'll check out your vids!

    I'm 5'8 " so I'm wondering how I'd fit on the bike. How tall are you? Is a centre stand fitted or an option? Sintered pads improve the grip? Mirrors good. I've been looking at a Ducati 950 SS on which the mirrors are useless. Top box and tank bag would do me for most uses. Used to own a GPZ1100 B2 with fuel injection. Loved watching the blocks on the fuel guage disappear rapidly.

      I'm 180 cm and a 32 inch inseam for comparison. Not sure about the centre-stand, not that I've seen from the Kawasaki accessories. A pad swap might be an idea if you want more bite. On the bright side the mileage seemed very good on this.

(With the standard seat. A lower seat is available). There is no centre stand, neither as an option. The 1000SX is prepared for panniers and a top box, that enables you to take them on and off easily. But I think they're (too) expensive.

      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@albertlay8927 Yep that luggage is a little eye watering on price. The topbox less so, but the panniers... I thought the colour matched panels was the price per pannier to start with and thought it wasn't too bad, then realised my mistake! That's a hard one, as while you could definitely tour on an MT-10 (with the right mods making that more comfortable), I think the emphasis is more on the crazy hyper-naked style machine.
