As a plus sized person who always dreams of pretty knitting patterns, I appreciate greatly the effort to grade upwards. Now to learn to knit lace, says the person who has unpicked a piece of straightforward ribbing 4 times because of an inability to focus on maintainingknit/purl. 😬

Thank you for your tutorial! I did think if I could make the too small cardigan work as a bolero but the shaping at the waist makes the hem stick out like a little tail 😅

I've only been knitting for about a year and have held off on vintage patterns because they're pretty much always too small for my 40 inch bust. The blouse you graded is so pretty so I might actually try that one soon to get started on some vintage knitting :), thanks a lot! If you're interested in trying vintage knitting, and don't mind knitting lace, this is a great pattern to start with because there's so little shaping. I hope you do give it a go I'd love to see your version 💚

Claude, I am not sure if you've already seen this in your search for a ballerina wrap cardigan, but the designer Two of Wands has a free pattern called "ballerina wrap top" that might have ticked all your boxes. It is short sleeve and knit in stockinette, but I'm sure you could modify it for your purposes.

I just looked at your shirt for the first time and realized that I made a smoky gray-purple shirt just like it in the summer between 7th and 8th grade. One of the girls in my class made one in Home Economics class and I liked it so much I made one just like it.

Did you know there are charities in the UK that you can gift your knitting to? The knitting group near me does it and they go to people who need the warm clothing. So if you wanted to knit up those interesting knits that you don't think you'd wear much you could give them away to a good cause
Love all your knitts thanks for sharing. When knitting sleeves I always knit both at the same time that way I am able to determine if they will be long, three quarters or short but will always be the same length without running out because yeah nightmare.
Yarn chicken is so stressful! Do you find you knit faster when you're doing it--as though you can trick the yarn and reach the end of the row before it does? Love the blouse pattern and can't wait to see what further historical projects you have up your (sweater?) sleeve.

The lacy blouse looks really lovely! I was thinking it wouldn't work for me but with it being a bit oversized, it would probably work untucked with a nursing vest underneath. You have also reminded me of the ballerina-style cardi I used to have and how much I loved it... I may just have to make a new one too!

I love love love vintage knitting!!! Especially 1940's with a bit early and later tagged on. I am absolutely riveted to the television set right now because of "All creatures great and small". The knit wear is absolutely stunning. I also enjoyed "Homefires" for the same reason.
Oh, to me wool is practically *always* itchy, especially Shetland wool ;) (With exceptions of merino and alpaca, maybe.) Anyways, I've also decided, like you, that I need to be more intentional in my knitting, and despite vintage etc. being so much fun, to knit items *I'm actually going to wear* i.e. those that are flattering enough (which in my case is more feminine than most patterns), in colours that I'll actually wear (which basically is black, all shades of red and purple). That may sound boring, but it's true! And I usually more likely run out of yarn, not have *any* left, so what you had left in that one cardigan is a lot to me ;D

Yay for winning yarn chicken! These are all so pretty and now I need to check your ravelry page! I also figure out how many stitches per gram to play yarn chicken. But I always get anxious and my tension gets all messed up so once I've completed the project I see what I have left, frog back to my tension change, and then re-do the last bit of knitting.
You can use the cheapest of conditioners, I always use Tesco's own. I save an old bottle and put half a bottle in this add a good bit of water and shake, and I repeat this process until it is completley dissoveable. In other words the principle is add the water to the conditioner not the other way round.
I think "Failed" is a little harsh on yourself. The result of the project may have turned out differently than you imagined at the start, but no "Experience" can ever really be a failure. It is just useful information for the future! Keep the videos coming, we love watching your adventures.

You've mentioned enjoying 40's knitting - have you read any of the "Knitting Illustrated" books by Margaret Murray and Jane Koster? They're a wonderful original source of patterns from before, during, and after WW2 :)

Years ago (before online yarn shopping) my mother asked me to make her a shawl for Christmas from Folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle. It was just over 1.5 meters square. I ran out of yarn around 5 cm from the end, but I managed to locate one additional skein in the same dye lot, and it was JUST enough to finish. I had about 2 meters of yarn left, too! I’m looking forward to seeing the costumes you’re working on. As a brain fog sufferer, myself, I hope you get a long reprieve. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.
Next conditioner soak, add the conditioner to a jar of warm water and shake the neck out of it....or stick it into a blender to break down the chunks. That cardi is adorable! It's too bad it doesn't fit you. I hope you find someone who can wear it!
These are all such beautiful patterns! I'm deeply in love with the idea of the 50s blouse. I have had a few pieces that I have loved and keep thinking about. I have a blue dress that I have made three times in the same color with slightly different fabrics. I plan to start knitting a misers purse next, and I have a fluffy blue cap that I started and had to frog because my leading edge had the wrong tension and ended up looking -- frayed. I try things against myself to make sure that I have the right size before making the second side, or second sleeve as it cuts down the guesswork a little

I can’t believe it took me so li g to find your TH-cam channel, given that I’m a vintage knitter whose partner lives with an exhausting disability. Your video on sewing with a disability was wonderful. The advice on pacing one’s work and managing expectations are so familiar in our household. (And I think I understand why you use that adorable tiny iron.)

Loving the knitting videos! The Buddleia Blouse (free pattern one) looks super cute! I usually knit things because I like the process of knitting, not actually wearing most of them. But I'm also at the stage of knitting where I usually make shawls or scarves, really basic things, and I use the super cheap acrylic yarn. So, I'm thinking, the blouse will be a future project when I've practiced some of the techniques, and figure out what kind of yarn isn't itchy... and how to change UK yarn terms to US yarn weights...
You mentioned the problem of resizing for the pattern repeat. I have just knitted the front of a sweater which has turned out nearly two inches bigger than the published finished size. This is because the added stitches for sizes is the same as the repeat. Stupidly and very annoyingly they do not show the actual finished width just the bust size plus ease. So lesson learned. When choosing a size with a stitch pattern check the number of stitches with the gauge.
There is a craft council in the US that standardizes the size of yarn. You can look that. You laughed about the maths snd science, for my six year hand spinner course, we had to calculate Bradford count on every single submitted skein. Weighing in grams that a complicated algebraic formula. But consistency was very important. Imagine we spin hundred if not thousands of yards that must be spot on consistent. Have you knitted a bed jacket? I found some vintage ones. I wish to cast on one for winter. Forget about finding any in wool in a shop. Wool breathes. Isnt it marvelous? You are incredibly lucky to live in such a wool history country. Blacker and blacker is a UK woolen mill specializing in breed specific yarns. Pricey perhaps but maybe some day
My making in general has taken something of a backseat lately - I finally (fingers crossed, touch wood, throw salt, pet a black cat) might have found a combination of medications to tame my chronic migraines. So I'm slowly working on trying to get build my energy levels up - more time walking and whatnot, less time knitting. I've mostly been knitting vanilla socks. I'm contemplating pulling my one garment WIP out of the naughty corner to start work on it again. Here's hoping that autumn is going to serve as motivation to get moving on that cardigan again.
I saw the blouse pattern on Raveley and downloaded it straight away & ordered the yarn (instead of my usual 'that looks good, add to queue, don't have any yarn suitable, look at in queue a year later & think "actually I've got a dozen things like this in the queue, better cull some".' I've not cast on yet as I've got 3 present knits on the needles at the moment (socks for my brother, a Christmas present he requested & a bit scary as I'm doing 2 at a time magic loop for the first time, plus estimating their fit!; manuscript cowl which is nice colourwork & is a surprise for the recipient; & a set for a new baby girl due in November - dress is done, hat & mittens need making up, booties & cardigan need knitting) plus a jumper for me I really would like to finish before it gets really cold... But it's all ready for me to start when I can!
OMG that yarn/wool chicken sounded and looked terrifying oh my goodness gracious. I do not ever want to play that game holy cricket. Maybe now that I've started purging (re giving away on local buy nothing group) hobbies that I'm actively not pursuing anymore....I can start letting the more fiber arts crafts creep in more. Between you and Stringchronicity on the knit/crochet front and Christine and DSAThreads on the embroidery front I might be too far down the rabbit hole. ...but maybe I should actually sew some stuff on my to do list that I already have the materials for first though before I take up knitting or crocheting or embroidery 😅😅😅

Congrats on re-creating your favourite sweater(s). I totally relate as I recently had a similar victory- I randomly stumbled upon a pattern for a cardigan that I was trying to recreate (and I have been searching for a pattern for years!)- and then it took me awhile to actually knit it up! but I finished it this summer! @@suem6004 Hi Sue, not being a spinner I'm not sure what you mean really. The wool I have is all sweater amounts of mainly 3ply wool, such as Patons purple Heather, Munrospun evening dusk and similar. Xx
If the herbal essences is working good then keep using that for your wool, I use Mane & Tail conditioner if you can get that it's really good for natural animal fibers
Have you looked at engineering knits ? she’s on TH-cam I’ve only watched her sewing videos not her knitting videos but she might have some suggestions Also for the light knitting, wool is not for everybody have you thought of alpaca or llama ? I know it can be a little bit expensive but there are alpaca farms in the UK and I believe they do process and make wool
I really like the vintage Lacy top you knitted in Uppingham 2ply lambs wool. As I cannot wear Shetland wool which itches me senseless like you. I would like to know whether lambs wool is comfortable to wear. I normally knit with merino which beautifully soft. Kindest regards.

I'm not an experienced knitter but couldn't you insert ribknit down the sides and underneath the sleeve if you need to loosen the sleeve? Just stitch them in. It is only the green around the hem that you'd have to redo ( and sewing the side seams, armhole area).

The lacy blouse looks really lovely! I was thinking it wouldn't work for me but with it being a bit oversized, it would probably work untucked with a nursing vest underneath. You have also reminded me of the ballerina-style cardi I used to have and how much I loved it... I may just have to make a new one too!

I love love love vintage knitting!!! Especially 1940's with a bit early and later tagged on. I am absolutely riveted to the television set right now because of "All creatures great and small". The knit wear is absolutely stunning. I also enjoyed "Homefires" for the same reason.
Oh, to me wool is practically *always* itchy, especially Shetland wool ;) (With exceptions of merino and alpaca, maybe.) Anyways, I've also decided, like you, that I need to be more intentional in my knitting, and despite vintage etc. being so much fun, to knit items *I'm actually going to wear* i.e. those that are flattering enough (which in my case is more feminine than most patterns), in colours that I'll actually wear (which basically is black, all shades of red and purple). That may sound boring, but it's true! And I usually more likely run out of yarn, not have *any* left, so what you had left in that one cardigan is a lot to me ;D

I also figure out how many stitches per gram to play yarn chicken. But I always get anxious and my tension gets all messed up so once I've completed the project I see what I have left, frog back to my tension change, and then re-do the last bit of knitting.
You can use the cheapest of conditioners, I always use Tesco's own. I save an old bottle and put half a bottle in this add a good bit of water and shake, and I repeat this process until it is completley dissoveable. In other words the principle is add the water to the conditioner not the other way round.
I think "Failed" is a little harsh on yourself. The result of the project may have turned out differently than you imagined at the start, but no "Experience" can ever really be a failure. It is just useful information for the future! Keep the videos coming, we love watching your adventures.

You've mentioned enjoying 40's knitting - have you read any of the "Knitting Illustrated" books by Margaret Murray and Jane Koster? They're a wonderful original source of patterns from before, during, and after WW2 :)
Yes! I have Practical Knitting Illustrated and it's been life saver when I come across weird instructions!

Years ago (before online yarn shopping) my mother asked me to make her a shawl for Christmas from Folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle. It was just over 1.5 meters square. I ran out of yarn around 5 cm from the end, but I managed to locate one additional skein in the same dye lot, and it was JUST enough to finish. I had about 2 meters of yarn left, too! I’m looking forward to seeing the costumes you’re working on.

Next conditioner soak, add the conditioner to a jar of warm water and shake the neck out of it....or stick it into a blender to break down the chunks.

These are all such beautiful patterns! I'm deeply in love with the idea of the 50s blouse. I have had a few pieces that I have loved and keep thinking about. I have a blue dress that I have made three times in the same color with slightly different fabrics. I plan to start knitting a misers purse next, and I have a fluffy blue cap that I started and had to frog because my leading edge had the wrong tension and ended up looking -- frayed. Hope your health stays good.

I try things against myself to make sure that I have the right size before making the second side, or second sleeve as it cuts down the guesswork a little

Loving the knitting videos!
The Buddleia Blouse (free pattern one) looks super cute! I usually knit things because I like the process of knitting, not actually wearing most of them. But I'm also at the stage of knitting where I usually make shawls or scarves, really basic things, and I use the super cheap acrylic yarn. So, I'm thinking, the blouse will be a future project when I've practiced some of the techniques, and figure out what kind of yarn isn't itchy... and how to change UK yarn terms to US yarn weights...
You mentioned the problem of resizing for the pattern repeat. I have just knitted the front of a sweater which has turned out nearly two inches bigger than the published finished size. This is because the added stitches for sizes is the same as the repeat. Stupidly and very annoyingly they do not show the actual finished width just the bust size plus ease. So lesson learned. When choosing a size with a stitch pattern check the number of stitches with the gauge.

There is a craft council in the US that standardizes the size of yarn. You can look that.
You laughed about the maths snd science, for my six year hand spinner course, we had to calculate Bradford count on every single submitted skein. Weighing in grams that a complicated algebraic formula. But consistency was very important. Imagine we spin hundred if not thousands of yards that must be spot on consistent.
Have you knitted a bed jacket? I found some vintage ones. I wish to cast on one for winter. Forget about finding any in wool in a shop. Wool breathes. Isnt it marvelous? You are incredibly lucky to live in such a wool history country. Blacker and blacker is a UK woolen mill specializing in breed specific yarns. Pricey perhaps but maybe some day
My making in general has taken something of a backseat lately - I finally (fingers crossed, touch wood, throw salt, pet a black cat) might have found a combination of medications to tame my chronic migraines. So I'm slowly working on trying to get build my energy levels up - more time walking and whatnot, less time knitting.
I've mostly been knitting vanilla socks. I'm contemplating pulling my one garment WIP out of the naughty corner to start work on it again. Here's hoping that autumn is going to serve as motivation to get moving on that cardigan again.

I saw the blouse pattern on Raveley and downloaded it straight away & ordered the yarn (instead of my usual 'that looks good, add to queue, don't have any yarn suitable, look at in queue a year later & think "actually I've got a dozen things like this in the queue, better cull some".'
I've not cast on yet as I've got 3 present knits on the needles at the moment (socks for my brother, a Christmas present he requested & a bit scary as I'm doing 2 at a time magic loop for the first time, plus estimating their fit!; manuscript cowl which is nice colourwork & is a surprise for the recipient; & a set for a new baby girl due in November - dress is done, hat & mittens need making up, booties & cardigan need knitting) plus a jumper for me I really would like to finish before it gets really cold... But it's all ready for me to start when I can!

Maybe now that I've started purging (re giving away on local buy nothing group) hobbies that I'm actively not pursuing anymore....I can start letting the more fiber arts crafts creep in more. Between you and Stringchronicity on the knit/crochet front and Christine and DSAThreads on the embroidery front I might be too far down the rabbit hole.
...but maybe I should actually sew some stuff on my to do list that I already have the materials for first though before I take up knitting or crocheting or embroidery 😅😅😅

I totally relate as I recently had a similar victory- I randomly stumbled upon a pattern for a cardigan that I was trying to recreate (and I have been searching for a pattern for years!)- and then it took me awhile to actually knit it up! but I finished it this summer! Do you have genuine vintage wool? I would be interested in buying some at least sample lengths for my spinning channel. Want to spin then knit vintage wool wear. Just need 1 ft of yarn to replicate.
@@suem6004 Hi Sue, not being a spinner I'm not sure what you mean really. The wool I have is all sweater amounts of mainly 3ply wool, such as Patons purple Heather, Munrospun evening dusk and similar. Xx
If the herbal essences is working good then keep using that for your wool, I use Mane & Tail conditioner if you can get that it's really good for natural animal fibers
I may have to pop into my local pet shop!

Also for the light knitting, wool is not for everybody have you thought of alpaca or llama ? I know it can be a little bit expensive but there are alpaca farms in the UK and I believe they do process and make wool
I really like the vintage Lacy top you knitted in Uppingham 2ply lambs wool. As I cannot wear Shetland wool which itches me senseless like you. I would like to know whether lambs wool is comfortable to wear. I normally knit with merino which beautifully soft. Kindest regards.
Hi! I find lambswool super soft to wear. It isn't as smooth as merino but it doesn't itch or aggravate my sensitive skin like Shetland wool does 💚

I'm not an experienced knitter but couldn't you insert ribknit down the sides and underneath the sleeve if you need to loosen the sleeve? Just stitch them in. It is only the green around the hem that you'd have to redo ( and sewing the side seams, armhole area).
That might work! There's some unusual waist shaping in this pattern that I would have to figure out but I'll do some experiments 💚
