I'm not a yellow person either but those socks are incredibly cute. They remind me of the vanilla fairy cakes with 100 & 1000s that mum used to make when it was out birthday so how could I not smile at them.

I loved Home Fires ❤ I was SO disappointed when they didn't continue the series. They left it in a cliff hanger....Ahhh!!! I wanted more 😫 Please Please Please finish the Laura Sweater and knit some of the other jumpers and waistcoat from the series. I bought the DVD's of Home Fires. What a great cast of actors. I know the author wrote the next installment in book/novel form of Jambusters. I was so involved with the characters lines and then to keep us hanging....ahhhh😣
I do love your shawl. I've spent the last month making up cushions and rugs. I crocheted the triangles and squares for them out of scraps up to 20+ years ago and got too distracted by life to finish. They are made from scraps and it seems I used a USA size K hook. So everything from rug yarn , double knitting and fine mohair with up to 4 strands in diferent shades . So the red triangles are now all stitched together into a large triangle shaped cushion like a great flame. I'm still making squares for the rug as i watch you and yes all the yarn came from charity shops. Serendipity is a wonderful thing. When i've used it all up I'll ask the woman who spins, dyes and sells wool yarn on our local market to make me some new project inspiration. I am old enough to remember when post war yarn only came in services colours plus baby blue ,pink , white and for adults bottle green , brown and berry red. The shock of seeing jumpers in shops and not home made first time when I was about 10 !
That shawl is to die for! I get the "paying for irresponsible choices" thing. Ah me, pay off and cost! I am amazed at how much you get done. When do you fit in all your knitting? And 1930s crochet? Yes please!!
I knit every evening from about 7pm-10pm in front of the telly. It's amazing what a few hours a day can produce! I think being a left hand yarn holder I also knit faster which helps!
Fantastic! I love listening to you talk about knitting, and seeing what you have made/are making. I'm simply a novice knitter without much ambition to progress. I love using LARGE needles...but I enjoy watching real knitters and I enjoy what I do.
As a rule, when making a jumper/sweater/cardigan/top of any kind, if the pattern says "left shoulder" I think of it as the sweater's left shoulder. That way, the front will be the front when you put it on. I hope that made sense 😸

Have you ever overdyed yarn? I think if you look at a colour wheel and choose a colour like purple, red, or blue then you can keep the pink socks instead of giving them away.
I've never dyed yarn but it's on my list of things to do this year. I'm just trying to get together suitable equipment because I don't want to ruin any of my pans 😂
I just recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did! Besides sharing the very niche interest that is vintage knitting, I also feel very seen as someone who also cannot afford massive splurges on heftily priced luxury yarn (at least they’re a luxury for me). It feels lonely and isolating most of the time when I see knitters around me both online and offline spending hundreds on a single garment project without a dent on their savings, and when I do lament about my inability to afford these things often I get responses that are quite tone deaf about people’s different economic capabilities (“just ask some yarn for Christmas!” My friends and family aren’t well off either hello), so again it just feels so validating to see you create beautiful work within the very same niche while still being economical with your yarn spendings. I’m very excited to tune into your future knitting endeavors ❤️

I am blown away by how talented and prolific you are! Just to make you laugh, I started a pair of socks with 5 double pointed needles 16 years ago, then quit knitting completely. So now I have one sock finished and one on needles with about 5 cm of the toe left to do, and no clue about how I did it! I love all your projects! Quite amazing. Happy 2022 to you.
I love how clearly your dance background comes through in your sock modeling. I never danced, but I am a former figure skater and that muscle memory still comes out every now and then. Also i really like the pattern of those pink socks, it looks so cool!
One cannot have to many knitted socks 🥰 My mother knits, and she gives me and my siblings a pair of socks every christmas. I live in northen sweden, and nothing beats knitted socks for warmth and general winter cosyness
I got foam mats from the supermarket in the summer (from the summer toys section) to use as blocking mats - though I don't have anywhere big enough to put more than 1 at a time really. So when I blocked a cotton scarf I made for my brother, I folded the scarf in half (not ideal) and blocked it across 2 of the mats, and propped it up on the kitchen radiator. I would love the pattern for the golf socks - I'm wondering if they became so popular as people realised how warm & practical they were? I do not play golf! But need socks that will keep me warm.
I can't wait for more 1940's (knitting) content! I'm very new to knitting and I'm definately not confident enough yet to knit a vintage pattern, but that's really my style... So I love seeing what you make, learning bit by bit, and clicking through all the patterns you've found floating around online. Where to start....the shawl is so intricate and shows your advanced skill....socks: love the color yellow and it does make me happy to wear it just like your duck socks....home fires jumper (sad they didn't continue the series) with the embroidery just lovely. Lot of inspiration in this video and thank you for bleeping out the few frustrating words (personally sad to hear it around me every where I go, even from young children).....the beautiful Chinese jumper: are you kidding: what incredible concentration you have, it is stunning!! That quilt is going to be incredible, and loaded with memories! I’m still working on a chunky knit blanket for my son, and am about 2/3 done. I’ve injured my shoulder, so it’s slow going, but I’m going to get it done. I’ve taken a page from Noelle of Costuming Drama and given myself compassionate deadlines. Your stinginess, broke-ness and frugal approach to things is a big reason why I love watching your videos because RELATABLE. I looked at your hexie puffs and went through the exact same thought process about their construction that you did. 🤣 P.S. Plus I think it will be the perfect use for my own sock oddments, too. I'm not fond of the puffed look, plus I _don't_ have crates of filling lying around, but easily knit two-layer hexies sound like just the thing! Also, thank you for the golf socks pattern. They really do look great worn over tights and I think that's very much my style... I downloaded it, looked at the dimensions, and found out that for my short legs I'll have to make them a good four inches shorter in the calf. In comparison, the foot I'll only have to chop down by half an inch. 😁
Oh wow you're productive!! My favourite is the willow jumper, it'll be BEAUTIFUL 😄 and FUN!! I don't knit,( I'm more into crochet ) but sewing and doing things with fabric is mainly my thing. Now I feel inspired to print a fabric with a willow print and sew a blouse.

I adore these knitting videos! Your way of speaking is so relaxing and enjoyable. Personally I hate knitting socks, but in theory I think they are a perfect medium for experimenting with colours you wouldn’t normally wear - for me at least, if the colour isn’t going near my face I’m less fussy about it! Can’t wait to see more wacky 1940s jumpers :)

Oh wow, seriously, how do you manage to knit that many garments? I can whip up one jumper max per year and maybe 10-15 pairs of socks but that's really it. With working full time, having to attend to my flat, do the shopping, entertaining friends, spending time with my boyfriend and general life happening, I just don't have the headspace nor the time to do this much knitting. I can mindlessly knit socks in front of the TV anytime but right now I am trying to recreate the white vintage jumper you did some time ago and so far, it took me 3 months to do the back piece and it's not even fully finished yet. I am mighty impressed by your speed.
You probably already know about this but I seem to remember there was a programme about a group of women who knit all the knitwear for a series and it was put into a book with the patterns? Not sure if it was Homefires but I'm sure you'd be able to get the book from your local library (or through the inter loan system). I've just finished my second go at a cardigan pattern from an early 50s magazine and am now knitting a vintage pattern capelet to wear over my very swooshy 1950s pattern dressing gown. I've been sewing for decades but only picked up knitting a couple of years ago - my local wool shop lady has given me fab tutorials.
I have a copy of the vintage knitting book you showed, but very well used!!!!!! The sizes are a bit small for busty me so I will have to adjust. Also fine yarn is a problem for me ( fumble fingers!).
Currently attempting to knit a pair of socks using some alpaca wool I got in the gift shop of an alpaca farm I visited. Marvelling at how much you've made in a year while I debate if I need to restart this sock for the second time 🤦🏻♀️
Happy New Year! I can't knit. I've tried over the years but I never get anywhere. However, back in the 1970s and 80s I used to pick up vintage sewing and knitting patterns in charity shops. My partner's grandmother knitted some up for me. I made some great dresses and tops from the vintage sewing patterns. The weirdest knitting pattern was in a booklet of clothes and household items. It was for a stair carpet! My 6 year old grandson would love socks in the pink yarn. Pink is his favourite colour. 😀
I for one am looking forward to the delft pattern! That's probably my fave out of all your current makes/wips And also thank you for being so frank/real on yarn cost and affordability and no-shame on just using yarn that is within one's budget ❤

everything is so so beautiful! I really want to learn to knit, but I have absolutely no experience. Does anyone have any advice on where to start and learn?
My advice is to start small. Practice knitting squares until you're really confident with casting on and casting off. Also look up different ways to hold the yarn as there are lots of different ways to get the same result and depending on if you're right or left handed, how strong your hands are etc the one tutorial you watch may not be the best way to do it for you. My knitting got so much better and more enjoyable when I changed the way I hold my yarn. Good luck and happy knitting!
For what it's worth, 10rowsaday and sheepandstitch channels have been the most helpful to me for relearning knitting after about a 10 years long gap (not that I was particularly good then). 3mm or 4mm circular needles and DK (8ply) yarn would be my beginning recommendation for first scarves, square hats and such. Thick enough to see progress after a few rows, but often cheaper than very chunky or very fine yarns. Then You can level up to knitting in the round with double-pointed needles if You wish, and probably will already know of You would like to try chunky, fluffy knitting or finer, lacier things. Multi-coloured yarn can also hide a lot of small mistakes ;) Best of luck and hope You enjoy knitting :)

That way the blanket/quilt stays relatively fluid. If you stitch all the sides together it's (apparently, I've not made one myself!) too rigid to be comfortable. No the golf stockings are knitted in the round. Strangely I don't mind knitting socks in the round but garments infuriate me! I have found some patterns for vintage socks on two needles though... now I have another thing I need to try ...

The 1940s book you recently got is part of a series of ?6 written by the same two ladies which were published in consecutive years in the 1940s. Roxanne Richardson has managed to get hold of all of them and has featured them in several of her TH-cam casual Friday vlogs. She has also knitted the tricorn hat you showed.

It's very similar to embroidering on fabric but because you're using yarn you use a tapestry or darning needle. You also have to be careful not to distort the stretch of the knitted fabric but essentially the stitches themselves are the same. I used back stitch and lazy daisy for the cardigan here.
You popped into my feed with something disability, second video am watching. Am in the US where wool is crazy expensive and thrift store yarn is always acrylic. NMD went full on 5yrs ago so no income, living off saving one doesn't buy yarn. I bought raw alpaca fleece, linen tow, corriedale roving and spun hoping the blurred vision and jittery vision would clear soon... didn't so have had reknit times wondering how I got a third armhole and WTF happened to this lace... Drops patterns are not easy when impaired. I have my grandmother's patterns packed away but haven't easily found them and no desire to do the pattern of the week and look like every other knitter except in handspun alpaca. Now that you have done 2 Rizzo, do you think it will play nicely with alpaca?? I do appreciate your energy saving tips for sewing, I had been trying to sew but foot is unreliable on speed and blurred vision meant too much ripping, since buttons, zippers are harder now and can get trapped in a tshirt it is getting challenging. Sorry to hear about your struggles 💚 as for Rizzo, I think alpaca might work. It's very fitted and designed to be worn next to the skin so the instructions suggest picking something that you'd be happy wearing comfortably. I know alpaca can have a bit of a halo but I think that would look nice with this pattern 💚
Funnily, I'm the opposite what comes to knitting in the round / one piece vs knitting flat in pieces - the latter I avoid like plaque, only do it if I really have to, and often convert flat patterns into round! ;D

One cannot have to many knitted socks 🥰 My mother knits, and she gives me and my siblings a pair of socks every christmas. I live in northen sweden, and nothing beats knitted socks for warmth and general winter cosyness
I got foam mats from the supermarket in the summer (from the summer toys section) to use as blocking mats - though I don't have anywhere big enough to put more than 1 at a time really. So when I blocked a cotton scarf I made for my brother, I folded the scarf in half (not ideal) and blocked it across 2 of the mats, and propped it up on the kitchen radiator.
I would love the pattern for the golf socks - I'm wondering if they became so popular as people realised how warm & practical they were? I do not play golf! But need socks that will keep me warm.
I can't wait for more 1940's (knitting) content! I'm very new to knitting and I'm definately not confident enough yet to knit a vintage pattern, but that's really my style... So I love seeing what you make, learning bit by bit, and clicking through all the patterns you've found floating around online. Thank you for making the effort and sharing your work, and thanks for digitizing the sock pattern!
Absolutely wonderful video. In awe of your talent in changing up and creating something unique. Where to start....the shawl is so intricate and shows your advanced skill....socks: love the color yellow and it does make me happy to wear it just like your duck socks....home fires jumper (sad they didn't continue the series) with the embroidery just lovely. Lot of inspiration in this video and thank you for bleeping out the few frustrating words (personally sad to hear it around me every where I go, even from young children).....the beautiful Chinese jumper: are you kidding: what incredible concentration you have, it is stunning!! I’m still working on a chunky knit blanket for my son, and am about 2/3 done. I’ve injured my shoulder, so it’s slow going, but I’m going to get it done. I’ve taken a page from Noelle of Costuming Drama and given myself compassionate deadlines.

P.S. Plus I think it will be the perfect use for my own sock oddments, too. I'm not fond of the puffed look, plus I _don't_ have crates of filling lying around, but easily knit two-layer hexies sound like just the thing!
Also, thank you for the golf socks pattern. They really do look great worn over tights and I think that's very much my style... I downloaded it, looked at the dimensions, and found out that for my short legs I'll have to make them a good four inches shorter in the calf. In comparison, the foot I'll only have to chop down by half an inch. 😁
Oh wow you're productive!! My favourite is the willow jumper, it'll be BEAUTIFUL 😄 and FUN!! I don't knit,( I'm more into crochet ) but sewing and doing things with fabric is mainly my thing. Now I feel inspired to print a fabric with a willow print and sew a blouse.
This is quite a bit after the fact but thanks for introducing the Bird related sock yarn! My sister is a birdwatcher and their yarns are just perfect. I can't wait to make her "Kingfisher" socks.

I adore these knitting videos! Your way of speaking is so relaxing and enjoyable. Personally I hate knitting socks, but in theory I think they are a perfect medium for experimenting with colours you wouldn’t normally wear - for me at least, if the colour isn’t going near my face I’m less fussy about it! Can’t wait to see more wacky 1940s jumpers :)
I am in love either the pheasant socks, they're so gorgeous, if I could knit myself I'd definitely be making them! You've now got me considering learning to knit again though! (I made a very lumpy scarf as a teenager I think and don't think I enjoyed it much) 😂

Oh wow, seriously, how do you manage to knit that many garments? I can whip up one jumper max per year and maybe 10-15 pairs of socks but that's really it. With working full time, having to attend to my flat, do the shopping, entertaining friends, spending time with my boyfriend and general life happening, I just don't have the headspace nor the time to do this much knitting. I can mindlessly knit socks in front of the TV anytime but right now I am trying to recreate the white vintage jumper you did some time ago and so far, it took me 3 months to do the back piece and it's not even fully finished yet. I am mighty impressed by your speed.

You probably already know about this but I seem to remember there was a programme about a group of women who knit all the knitwear for a series and it was put into a book with the patterns? Not sure if it was Homefires but I'm sure you'd be able to get the book from your local library (or through the inter loan system). I've just finished my second go at a cardigan pattern from an early 50s magazine and am now knitting a vintage pattern capelet to wear over my very swooshy 1950s pattern dressing gown. I've been sewing for decades but only picked up knitting a couple of years ago - my local wool shop lady has given me fab tutorials.
I think the book you’re referring to is called something along the lines of Centenary Stitches and I know there’s a digital copy available on Ravelry.

I have a copy of the vintage knitting book you showed, but very well used!!!!!! The sizes are a bit small for busty me so I will have to adjust. Also fine yarn is a problem for me ( fumble fingers!).

Happy New Year! I can't knit. I've tried over the years but I never get anywhere. However, back in the 1970s and 80s I used to pick up vintage sewing and knitting patterns in charity shops. My partner's grandmother knitted some up for me. I made some great dresses and tops from the vintage sewing patterns. The weirdest knitting pattern was in a booklet of clothes and household items. It was for a stair carpet!
My 6 year old grandson would love socks in the pink yarn. Pink is his favourite colour. 😀

everything is so so beautiful! I really want to learn to knit, but I have absolutely no experience. Does anyone have any advice on where to start and learn?
My advice is to start small. Practice knitting squares until you're really confident with casting on and casting off. Also look up different ways to hold the yarn as there are lots of different ways to get the same result and depending on if you're right or left handed, how strong your hands are etc the one tutorial you watch may not be the best way to do it for you. My knitting got so much better and more enjoyable when I changed the way I hold my yarn. Good luck and happy knitting!
For what it's worth, 10rowsaday and sheepandstitch channels have been the most helpful to me for relearning knitting after about a 10 years long gap (not that I was particularly good then). 3mm or 4mm circular needles and DK (8ply) yarn would be my beginning recommendation for first scarves, square hats and such. Thick enough to see progress after a few rows, but often cheaper than very chunky or very fine yarns. Then You can level up to knitting in the round with double-pointed needles if You wish, and probably will already know of You would like to try chunky, fluffy knitting or finer, lacier things. Multi-coloured yarn can also hide a lot of small mistakes ;) Best of luck and hope You enjoy knitting :)

The secret for joining the hexipuffs is to only sew them at the corners. That way the blanket/quilt stays relatively fluid. If you stitch all the sides together it's (apparently, I've not made one myself!) too rigid to be comfortable. Looking forward to being inspired by your new projects!

No the golf stockings are knitted in the round. Strangely I don't mind knitting socks in the round but garments infuriate me! I have found some patterns for vintage socks on two needles though... now I have another thing I need to try ...

The 1940s book you recently got is part of a series of ?6 written by the same two ladies which were published in consecutive years in the 1940s. Roxanne Richardson has managed to get hold of all of them and has featured them in several of her TH-cam casual Friday vlogs. She has also knitted the tricorn hat you showed.

I will definitely be making that shawl sometime! How do you embroider on knitting? I am learning to sew and I do embroider, so I thought it would be fun to combine those hobbies!
It's very similar to embroidering on fabric but because you're using yarn you use a tapestry or darning needle. You also have to be careful not to distort the stretch of the knitted fabric but essentially the stitches themselves are the same. I used back stitch and lazy daisy for the cardigan here.
You popped into my feed with something disability, second video am watching. Am in the US where wool is crazy expensive and thrift store yarn is always acrylic. NMD went full on 5yrs ago so no income, living off saving one doesn't buy yarn. I bought raw alpaca fleece, linen tow, corriedale roving and spun hoping the blurred vision and jittery vision would clear soon... didn't so have had reknit times wondering how I got a third armhole and WTF happened to this lace... Drops patterns are not easy when impaired. I have my grandmother's patterns packed away but haven't easily found them and no desire to do the pattern of the week and look like every other knitter except in handspun alpaca. Now that you have done 2 Rizzo, do you think it will play nicely with alpaca??
I do appreciate your energy saving tips for sewing, I had been trying to sew but foot is unreliable on speed and blurred vision meant too much ripping, since buttons, zippers are harder now and can get trapped in a tshirt it is getting challenging. "Thanks again.
Sorry to hear about your struggles 💚 as for Rizzo, I think alpaca might work. It's very fitted and designed to be worn next to the skin so the instructions suggest picking something that you'd be happy wearing comfortably. I know alpaca can have a bit of a halo but I think that would look nice with this pattern 💚
Funnily, I'm the opposite what comes to knitting in the round / one piece vs knitting flat in pieces - the latter I avoid like plaque, only do it if I really have to, and often convert flat patterns into round! ;D
