    I'm on permanent disability and early retirement, and am looking to bail out of Austin, TX. as the cost of living here is getting crazy stupid (blame the tech boom). I am in sw Ms. 1 hr from Natchez. 1 1/2 hr from New Orleans. 3 hrs from a shrimping and red fishing camp near Houma La. 15 minutes from I-55. 5 grocery stores in McComb Ms. I could go on. It’s a great life in many ways and beautiful green grass year round if wanted. The hurricanes are predicted and give you plenty time to prepare if needed. Been here over 20 years. No regrets. Came here from Phoenix on a job and did not go back. Great fresh air I can see through. Water from the county tastes like an aquifer named Kentwood water. Air quality does get humid but I have an air conditioner. No neighbors on top or below or even next door. Land prices are around $4000 per acre. I hope to always live here.

      @@onionhead5780 Well I was born here and know what it was like before it turned into such a mess. CA has its plusses, but is so overcrowded (oddly enough populated mostly by transplants from other states), and operates as its own entity in many ways. There are many businesses that will not do business with anyone in California. Many times it has to do with transparency laws that the rest of the country doesn't have. They do not want to hand over their supply chain. They also don't want people to know the item was produced overseas in a sweatshop and cost them pennies on the dollar to produce and retail mark up is sinfully unbelievable. It's more complicated than that, but you get the picture. I wanted to purchase a gift card from Belks for a friend that lives in NC. My online purchase was rejected, so I called. They refused to sell me a gift card solely based on my residence. There are many more out there. Guess what? None of those businesses will ever get a red cent from me. Or any of my friends. My suggestion to others that want to visit, come off season. CA is very expensive compared to many other states.

    • @susanmarie2231
      @susanmarie2231 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Not dising on what you said but sometimes it matters if you intencd to stay short-term. Sometimees it just matters if you put skirting around your rig...Like in Maine a.
      cottage built on cinderblocks is not considered permanent and therefore, taxed differently.
      Throw some skirting around the
      "foundation" and you're good!
      So check ordinances before accepting a "no". Some communities
      may just. not "encourage" tiny houses but not prohibit them altogether.

      Yup I was thinking about a tiny house, but lot fees in nice established ones don't work out for me economically.
      I accidentally found a one bedroom less then 700 square foot real home way up north in a little town 3500 people & it's perfect for retirement and way less then a tiny house and lot fees. My first home and my mortgage is just under $300. a month! Wow to cool & my children can sell it when I'm dead. LoL
      I've tried the places these types of videos Recommend, but the crime usually is very high and whatever was affordable for me were dumps.

TINY HOMES just moved into the Forest section. Then there is the "beach" section, and the Prairie. Across the street will be the Resort. It is on a mountain. Larger lots too. We go south in the winter and work as volunteers at state parks(about 6 months). Our total cost ends up about just under $15,000. Two years ago I discovered I was 100% disabled, not permanent, but that money is just banked for now, we still live frugally. The volunteering is really fun and we get to see the country. But we are looking for a place down south to move to eventually. I love retirement, we thought we would have to work to supplement our retirement, turns out we don't. Very grateful I was drafted in '67, the VA benefits and care are phenomenally superior.

    Great video. It is interesting that you have found so many places that are cheap to live in yet have really decent livability. As you point out that some don't have jobs to offer, however with the premise of living on nothing more than your SSA benefits a job isn't needed. I would just be concerned about the quality of medical care for a couple of the smaller places, but maybe that livability score you mention covers that. If a pe5rson owned their house, sold it, moved to one of these, bought a house outright, the cost to live would be really good---1500 or less minus rent. I hope you find more places and continue the series.

    Having lived off far less then the lowest income mentioned here I will just say this. If you manage your money correctly you can live pretty much anywhere you want on 1200 bucks a month. This means not having a car payment not having a cell phone no cable (well ok a Obama phone. Its free and reliable) and learning that you don't have to have all those new trendy items going around. We brought in 1thousand dollars a month and lived in Sumter South Carolina and in Daytona beach FL. for 10 years and managed to make ends meet go fishing anytime we wanted and generally had everything we needed. Our bills got paid we had food we always had insurance on our 500 dollar vehicle and we lived a comfortable life with plenty of fun mixed into the life we where living. We are doing much better now having picked up a foreclosure for 35 k in a small rural town here in South Carolina and our monthly income is around 3k a month. We paid cash for our home and are extremely happy with it. I would suggest anyone looking to purchase a home to look into small rural towns and the foreclosure market. This one was turn key ready and had recently been remodeled we had zero repairs to make before moving in and I haven't had to repair anything in 2 years.

    Most landlords like to see at least 3x the rent price for total income...so that means you usually can't spend more than $500 on rent if you make $1500...

    • @heidimisfeldt5685
      @heidimisfeldt5685 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      😎 Exactly. Add car expenses, a phone bill, and medical insurance.... and you didn't even spent a penny at the grocery store yet. I think these places are still too expensive for a $1500 per month income, unless there is any social housing around the area.
      Otherwise folks will pay their bills, and line up at the food banks.

      To be completely honest I would not rent a single wide trailer to somebody who only makes that much, neither would any other investors I know.
      There are certainly places where you can rent a house for $500, but those places tend to be kind of stabby.

    Decatur Alabama is number two, wow I'm surprised! Last time I was in Decatur Alabama it was 1993 I was in my early 20s. I'd just started my trucking company, had a delivery at the Winn-Dixie warehouse. I was the only black owner/operator there. The local sheriffs saw at the warehouse and asked me ask me what was my business in Decatur, I told him I had a delivery. He told me they didn't care for my kind down there, and rushed them to unload me ahead of other drivers that have been there before I was. Then he proceeded to sit there and wait until I made my delivery and gave me an escort out of town. Which was fine by me cause I didn't want to be anywhere where me and my race isn't wanted. Drove up to I-20 headed to Atlanta and I haven't been back since. I haven't even thought about Decatur until I saw it on this list. In the early 90s there were a lot of places down south had issues with my race(some still do) and those were places I avoided like the plague. Like I said I'm surprised and made it on this list maybe it's changed but I have no desire to go back and see. Besides I'm retired now running my business from my den. The only traveling I do now is when my wife and I go to some Caribbean or Polynesian island or the Keys.(if we ever get out of this quarantine)

      They AURE ARE....an invariably when a tornado strikes, somehow it strikes a mobile home park. Also - everywhere in the south but the Florida peninsula, trailer parks are usually a rats nest, filthy and full of crime. Many times you can't "give" a trailer away. I lived in a mobile home park in Escondido, Ca. and it was beautiful and well kept. No so in the south. I believe they have beautiful well kept mobile home parks in the peninsula of Florida - nothing to be ashamed of living in one there.
