Yes I grew up in SA and heard of many South African men going up to work on the dam. The wages were way above average but the conditions were rough.

Even more incredible thing is that they did IT in the 50s!!!!!

More incredible is that we from Zimbabwe and Zambia are starting to do general maintenance 60 years later. Zambian und Zimbabweans are the same people and tribe, separated by a river, by the way. We speak and understand the same traditional language and of cause englisch.

And in the middle of nowhere. They built what is now Kariba town to host the skilled workers. Presumably the labourers were housed in what became the townships nearby?? Add in the searing heat of the Zambezi valley and it was a fantastic piece of engineering.

I lived in Mufulira ( Zambia) in the late 60s to late 70s and visited the Kariba dam and lake, stayed in the Cutty Sark Hotel, I remember the beauty of the whole area including such marvels as the Victoria Falls to. Very fond memories

The Kariba dam. Absolutely no preventative maintenance carried out since it was inherited from the Rhodesians.

The Italian engineers who designed and built the Kariba dam and the ones who designed the Zambezi bridge were way ahead of their time.

Shame. The EU can't utilise the Zambezi Power Authority when funding the rehabilitation project because they are at a politico-economic war with Harare. EU funding Zambia. Not Zambia and Zimbabwe. Well, the good news is as long as the magnificent structure is maintained that's cool.

So sad that the shoots were designed incorrectly. If only they could rerouted down by about 60m and horizontal with 15 deg upwards spouts. I can't help to wonder whether the optimal cost effective solution at the moment is to provide some kind of deflectors outside each of the 6m dia tubes to cause the stream to break up in order to reduce the solid stream that hits the coffer dam below.

The plunge pool scouring to 80m deep under the dam, is the inevitable result of lack of hydraulic engineering design experience of the then designer.

I so none of what you are referring at. I lived in the Up Country with my grandma in the village. Villagers were forced to immigrate in urban areas South Africa, Bulawayo name it to seek for jobs in order to sustain it's families. The Ba-Tonga people have been mocked & played on both in Zambia, Zimbabwe & alone other rive banks of Zambezi... For several years. The land have it's indgenious yet they voiceless, neither does the so called energy have it been benefited much to the land owners. You need to stop bullying land owners.
