- On May 20, 1912, tragedy struck at Jubilee Mill, Blackburn, forever altering the lives of all who knew Alice Beetham.
Just 18 years old, Alice had been in a brief five-week relationship with 22-year-old Arthur Birkett.
And what began as a seemingly innocent romance quickly turned into a deadly obsession.
After ending relationship with Arthur's, he confronted her at their workplace, Jubilee Mill. Consumed by anger and unable to accept her refusal, Arthur took Alice's life in a horrifying act of violence.
This is the story of a young love that turned fatal, the tragic murder of Alice Beetham, and the haunting shadows left behind in the wake of that dark day at Jubilee Mill.

Great work Chris and Vickie.
Alice wanted to be free of Arthur and he wasnt going to let that happen.
Whether he planned it or not, he certainly planned it on that monday morning, even if only an hour or minutes before.
He robbed a young girl of her future and her life. Therefore i feel the sentence was correct.
Thanks again Chris and Vickie, great work 👍
Crime of Passion
Absolutely love this kind of history!! Not in a morbid way though. You showing where the people lived work & died makes it much more interesting. Plus Vicki is always there & also asks some very fabulous questions. Brilliant
Thank you ❤
He took the life of a young woman. As a woman of domestic violence where i was threatened with ending up in hospital if i stayed, no excuses should ever be made for men who do this. I had a man put me in hospital before after losing my pregnancy and it has left me deeply scarred. They know what they are doing. She called it off for a reason. If it wasn’t her he killed, he would have killed another woman who didn’t want to be with him.
I am sorry to hear a man did that to you, sending hugs from Vickie
Thank you Chris and Vickie for such a brilliant video - loved it. Whilst many people thought that the death penalty was a bit harsh in this case, I would find it hard to not ask for the death penalty, more so as the death of Alice was so barbaric. I wonder what Arthur did that was so bad for poor Alice to cut him off so sharply? Thanks again.
She probably felt he was too possessive and jealous, he may have tried to stop her seeing anyone else, even girl friends and family.
@@janetpendlebury6808plausible 😊
Yes, nothing documented but we tend to sway on the possessive side 😊
Thank you, beautifully done
Thanks Wendy from vickie & chris 😊
Another brilliant production well researched nice one guys👍
Thanks Mike from vickie & Chris 😊
Great episode, really enjoying this content & well put together story telling thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks guys I've really enjoyed watching your new video tonight it was a sad one😢 ❤ xx
Thanks Donna from Vickie & Chris
Another excellent, compassionate presentation! Thank you!
At a time when the Country was still mourning the tragic events of the sinking of the Titanic the month before this poor girl lost her life at the hands of her once beloved Arthur
Again your attention to detail is astonishing
The unmarked graves are a sad reminder of those lives now gone
Thank you once again Chris & Vickie you really do make these videos so much more than just a story
A lot of hard work goes into each one
Found your channel and I have to say it is one of my favourites..what a great job you do in telling the stories of these poor souls...and it is awesome to see the acutal locations where these crimes took place...you should think about putting them in a book..really look forward to your up coming episodes..
Many thanks Susan. When we research these stories, one of the first things we do is see if the locations are accessible and can we get to see anything, as some have changed dramatically over the years.
We are currently away for the next few days, so please don't think we are ignoring you or anyone else if we are late in replying 😀
Brilliant. Thank you both.
Our pleasure!
These are great films. You are so good as describing the stories in great details and with respect for the victims. Do you ever appear on TV? Vicki and your good self should have a programme, a bit like Murder in my Family, only better. Before I had my stroke, I started making films too about the dark history of Skipton where I live, You did one on a Skipton double murder which I had also covered in one of my books. Keep them coming. I and many others really appreciate your style, no sensationalism, just the facts. Well done. Malcolm Hanson, ex-tourist guide for Skipton and the Dales.
Im from Blackburn/Darwen so found this story really interesting especially as i am only a stones throw away from some of the pictures. Today i think it would be a 'crime of passion'. I do believe some crimes are fitting for the death penalty but not this one. I feel sad for alice and her family but also arthur and his. Would be nice if a few ppl got together and cleared alice s grave.
Please show more stories from blackburn and darwen.. im not lost in a history rabbit hole!!
Hi GemGemz, and welcome on board. We only live minutes away from Blackburn and have tons of stories yet to cover, so watch this space 😀
Some people just cant cope with Rejection ..
100% true!
Hello again. On starting to watch today's video a thought struck me. I thought "He's covered this story before." So i went back to check, and i was correct! Go back 3 years and you covered a tragic story titled - The Tragic Demise of Alice Beetham (1912) | #17 | Blackburn | Crime Podcast released 3yrs ago! Is today's video a more up to date account of that video released 3 years ago? Forgive me for pointing this all out to you but at 67 my memory is still razor sharp. Today's version is i am pleased to say a very moving story! Thank you for covering such stories. Facinating!
It's a story we did just as an audio version for the then podcasts we did. We always planned to go back to it for our TH-cam channel as a video version so we could take you all to the areas where the story took place all those years ago 😉
Really enjoyed this Chris and Vicky, really interesting. Good job.
Regards from NZ.
I enjoyed the video as usual thanks. Looking at the photos of Alice, taking into account they were in black and white and without the clarity of photos that you can achieve today, its clear she was a very attractive young woman. It made me wonder whether, with having her name at the bottom of the photos and being dressed in such elegant clothing, if she was some sort of budding model of the day or if there was such a thing in those days.
@@Lancastrian501 I have three pictures like this of my aunts, apparently in those days they use to have their picture took for their twenty first birthday. With photographs being for the rich it was a special treat.
Most definitely guilty premeditated murder of a lovely young lady. Thank you for this very interesting article.
Thanks Patsy, glad you enjoyed it.
Another Brilliant One Guy.s

Such a sad story 😢 but well done Chris and Vicky. Wonderful history once again, poor Alice to have been murdered in such a gruesome way was despicable. I think I agree with Chris and Vicky, don't really think that he intended to kill Alice, but he did go and buy a razor blade to kill her. Maybe he did try to reconcile with her but she didn't want to. He was obviously mesmerized by Alice. But he couldn't handle the rejection by her. But that still doesn't give him the right to murder her. Good that Justice was done. 👍👍 Thanks for sharing.
Very well presented on a difficult case. Every woman has a right to choose their life and who they want to spend it with. Murder is difficult to justify when it's used as the ultimate weapon for control. Does love stretch to killing? I don't think so. The times dictated that if you commit Murder you would hanged. I might have had some sympathy had he struck out in a fit of rage when rejected, but buying a razor and cutting her throat was cruel and calculating, he also told others if he can't have her, no one else would. Justice was served.
It's absolutely crazy how many stories we have discovered where people have taken the lives of others using these form of cut throat razors. And its also incredible how many people took their OWN lives with them! I can't even begin to imagine witnessing such things, but they were all too common back in the early 1900s.
What an awful shame. 2 young lives destroyed. Chris, your storytelling is so good, and it's so evident that you and Vicky research well. Being a 'local lass' myself, I find these stories facinating. Who knew we had so much dark and tragic history. When walking around these Northern streets, I often think about those who have gone before us. Really, their lives were full of the same issues only we now have more support. Bless them both and thank you Chris and Vicky.
Aww thanks Morgan for the kind comments and appreciating the work behind the scenes. From Chris & Vickie
I agree with you.
💯
Marvellous video thank you
Thanks for watching from vickie & chris 😊
Brilliant channel, enjoying it so much, particularly the historical true crime videos. The latest one is very interesting. Thanks!
Thanks Julie
Very interesting story, your story telling is wonderful i can just picture everything. Your presentations are getting better and better. Thank you both.
Thank you from vickie & chris 😊
Aww thank you from vickie & chris
Another great story,well done😊
Thank you from Vickie & Chris
Thank you
Good video and story well told
My mum told me this story her mum told her my gran lived just down the road in 1912
she was the same age and
probably knew each other
I remember the area before it all got demolished what a shame about Alice and family overgrown grave so happy you found it good to see I will try and find it next time I go up and put some flowers there
Me and my wife go to the cemetery now and again to visit Emily Holland a young 7 year old also murderd in Blackburn
Back in 1876
We put little toys and flowers on her grave
Yes, we've covered Emily Holland a few years back and visit regular. We also plan on doing a follow up video on her
@@DaysofHorror I will look forward to it thanks
Thank you for another interesting video. I like it when you overlay a map of what the area was once like. So sad that this young man couldn’t take no for an answer and committed such a savage attack.
Horrendous, thanks for the comments, we like to show as much information as we can find 😊
Great video, as always, but I am not so keen on the colourised or AI pictures. Nevertheless, please keep up the good work!
Those overgrown graves are nuts...
Sadly Blackburn council waste money left right and centre whereas they should be paying upkeep on cemeteries.
Agree, bur always someone there working on then different areas at a time but believe they themselves are volunteers
Very well done again tragic story though lots of info and details you two are brilliant! thank you 👏👏👏👏💕
❤❤
Another good one folks- think Alices rejection of Arthur suddenly and without explanation just drove him over the edge- should have commuted his sentence to life- but what a sad last resting place 😥
Maybe whatever happened embarrassed or even frightened Alice & she felt discomfort or shame in discussing it. Even today women don't always want to share when they are mistreated.
She probably rejected him because he was jealous and possessive, which means any woman he had later would also be in danger.
💯
Notification is on ❤❤❤❤

Happy birthday for today 🙂
Thx
Hi Chris and vickie. Happy belated birthday Chris so sorry didn't watch your video on Monday I'm back in hospital. Another kidney infection. Vickie is such a wonderful person what a lovely surprise. I wouldn't of been able to keep that quiet 😂
It was hard keeping it a secret believe me! He says thanks fir the birthday wishes. Sorry to hear your back in hospital, hope they get you sorted soon xx from vickie & chris
Another case i have never heard of. The death penalty was justified by the fact that he knew what he was doing & went out & purchased a razor to do the job. Not surprised his mother moved to Canada the shame must have drove her there. Another intresting story, thanks Guy's
Thanks for watching and commenting from vickie & chris 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting from vickie & chris
Thanks for watching
Yes, something must have gone on behund scenes but not documented anywhere is all we can think of, for Alice to part company from arthur. Thanks for watching from vickie & chris
Same here! 👍
👍
❤
Chris and vickie you have done a great job on this video I have seen other versions but not the same as for death penalty like I said before in those days very few got away with it and I wish we had it today , we have beautiful girls and women every day killed because someone. Had a bad day once again chris an d vickie great job
Thanks Royfor watching and enjoying it. Yep vickie definitely agrees with you on death penalty. Have a great week
State of those graves, Blackburn and Darwen council should be ashamed.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why Alice's mother would sign a petition for Arthur's reprieve. He went out that morning with the intention of murder. Justice done. Alice did not deserve to die just because she no longer wanted to be in this budding relationship.
Her mother didn't believe in the death penalty. That was her reasoning.
Again great video . Chris and Vickie, love you presentation . and historical positioning is really good .. to comment on the story of poor Alice . and Arther. yes its a love story .and yes a sad tale . But as for premeditation i feel this was definitly premedated not only premed.but Arther stated intention . prior to purchasing a cutthroate razor . man it was clearly premedated Chris dont see why you cant see this .. I get shudders when i think of the use of this weapon on hte girl and yes i would agree with the law of the day .IF anybody deserved the death penalty more i cant say . I think if Alice poor ALICE . had been my sister i would have wanted him the have the same end not only that i woul havve done meself if he had been repreived . sorry thats how i feel . most of the story was about Arther poor young ALICE .
Precisely. He announced what he would do. He purchased the weapon necessary. And used it very forcefully.
💯 agree
Very sad but very good story. I think Arthur got what he deserved, because he voiced dangerous ideation previously towards Alice. The murder was done with malice afore thought as he bought the cut throat razor with the intention of using it to cut Alices throat, and made a poor attempt at cutting his own. I think he was at peace with his upcoming execution because Alice was no longer able to live her life out without him.
I agree no one would take a cut throat razor to work every day so he did intend using it on poor Alice makes you wonder why she rejected him after they been so close to each other for weeks .
@rosa-f4865 Exactly! Rosa, he could have possibly put her off with possessive behaviour, or something like, just a thought.

💯 agree Cheryl
I don't agree with the death penalty but the reaction of the mother was really odd.
I think he did know what he was going to do.
Thanks for watching and commenting Denise, from vickie & chris
Good story but a familiar one? Didn't you cover this story a year ago, maybe 2 years? Today's video is a more up to date version of what happened?
Correct as we found more information
I don’t agree with the death penalty. I believe it is a hypocritical idea. However, a life taken should mean a life of punishment.
The romance of this story is rather twisted. Many murders have been committed in this manner by men refusing to accept the end of a relationship, and sometimes the other way around. I don’t agree that this story should have been portrayed in a romantic manner as if it’s a tragedy for the murderer. He said what he said. He purchased a cut throat razor. We weren’t party to the conversations between them but his control and manipulation of her by his refusal to accept the end of the relationship was possibly something that she saw in other aspects of his behaviour. No means no. My sympathies end when he does not accept it.
People knew what happened to you in those days if you committed murder. Charges and sentencing is never just about the individual but also about ‘what is in the public’s interest’. This man would never see the free light of day whatever his choice of sentence. However, the sentence also has to be an example of what you can expect to receive if you commit a similar crime.
His crime is a form of domestic violence. The rights of women were restricted in those days and it was next to impossible to extract yourself from a marriage etc if you were being treated badly. This sentence may have been a deterrent for some men who were abusing their own wives and may actually have saved some lives by those violent people reading about the consequences of another man’s crimes.
