A big thumbs up 👍 for this video. It was a pleasure to watch the “intro” and “out-fro” as Mike Morgan called them. Scott Nearing is a plane-spoken, positive gentleman. Nice to include him! I wish I lived closer to y’all and I’d be buying some beautiful 8 and 12 quarter ash from you. Great video yet again Nathan! Your channel is consistently the best! From Central Texas, Have a Great Day!!!
I have been an OTW patreon for about 6 months. I live in Easton CT and although I don't have sawmill through the years I have cut a lot of pine and red & white oak. I still have white pines on my property that exceed 30" in dia. I do enjoy your videos.
Love your videos man, my dad and I own a custom saw milling and furniture making business and your videos are always so informational and helpful for me when I mill! Keep it up 👍🏼
I wasn’t expecting German in the Scott Nearing audio clip 0:56 with “kostenlos,” which translates as “free of charge” in English, as he clarified. I wonder if he spoke German or if that was just a Pennsylvania Deutsch influence?
Memories, I listened to Scot Nearing speak at the 1st or 2nd Common Ground Fair in Litchfield Maine in 1977 or 78. I was in my early 30s at the time. That was in the back to the land, off grid movement that people think they have invented now. Good times !
Lovely boards Nathan! Like anything life, the knowledge of sawing a log and all different species of trees, is an art. It takes lots of experience and respect. I've learned quite a bit watching you Nathan and watched you grow in this art. For all of this I Thank You Kindly! Blessings to You and your Family! DaveyJO in Pa.
Very pretty grain!---Sure hoping someone benefits from your experience. A few times, in my career, it took me YEARS to get smart and perform tasks easier, so now, I teach others how to work smarter not harder!!! Why re-invent the wheel?!
I'm impressed with your tree knowledge Nathan, unfortunately there is no way to know about the rot in the tree until you open it up. your right! you did get some nice boards though.
Good video that was some beautiful ash to bad about that little beetle they can do some real damage. I would love to build something nice with that lumber.
Where,do you get your music... and the video backdrops are incredible! I,m a retired firefighter from Louisville and my wife passed away May of this year. I started watching your videos and just wanted to tell you. Thanks, my friend for the great inspiration!
Some really nice looking wood you've got there sir. It's a real shame what these ash bores are doing to the trees. I've seen areas of Pennsylvania where a whole stand of ash trees have been wiped out. With that said I really like watching your videos and learning more about the Sawyer's trade.
Actually he was a communist. Or at least a socialist. He & his wife built their own stone houses & buildings, raised their own food & lived a long life.
He was a pretty interesting character, an old school hippy communist from the depression era that lived to be 100 travelling the world preaching pacifism and the simple life.
I have an ash coming up that has a hole where a limb was. Little bigger than that one.Seen ants coming out of it yesterday. Should be interesting. I'll do your method.
Why is the second cut flipped 180 from the first rather than 90? I have a manual mill, seems like less rotation to just rotate it 90 at a time? I'm sure there's a reason, I just don't understand it
The two sides will then be sqaure to each other as they are cut off the bed. When you cut against the back stops it is easy to be a little off 90 deg. from the bed.
I've got some red oak logs that I think would make good lumber & slabs, just wish I could find a sawmill near me that could do what you do. Nice Ash log sir!
Here is my Keyboard Commando Comment; “You know a hell of allot more about wood working than I do!”

Love that you started with a recording of Scott Nearing’s wisdom.
thanks, great life he lead,
Great clip of Scott Nearing in the beginning.
If y'all haven't read the Good Life series by Scott and Helen, you should.
👍👍👍

That shot from the return arm was cool.
Love your videos.
Well l see more stuff coming.....0n this nice stuff....Thanks for sawing this nice stuff...!
That's " GRADE A " information, understood what you were saying.
Interesting to hear Scott Nearing's voice. I read his wife Helen's books when I was a kid. An original person for sure.
indeed great book,
Beautiful table top fill and covered with epoxy !

Ash is one of my favorite woods. I hate that little borer ashhole. Thanks for the great lesson in grade sawing Nathan. Good stuff.
agreed
That sure is some pretty lumber!
I always tried to work the knots over to the edges so they can be edged out.
good strategy also,
Good video that was some beautiful ash to bad about that little beetle they can do some real damage. I would love to build something nice with that lumber.
cutting into a log is like a box of chocolates. "you never know what your gonna get!"

Nathan, as I watched this video, I wondered if you ever considered to take a course in grading lumber? One of my best friends is a certified grader.
As a woodworking I'm looking at that grain and it's so gorgeous, but man its gunna be tricky to plane
Agreed
You need some DIY Sodium Silicate.
Also... WISNERS Rocket Mass Heater.
Also... Roman AIRCRETE.
Nice video and good explanation. I hope to get my sawmill videos up to your level. Very well done.
thanks Brandon, appreciate it,

THE VALUE OF A "KNOT" is equivalent to how tight it remains after drying.
What out the hole is going to get every time!!!!!! In real life as well in sawing!!!!!!
agreed
Would like one of those knotty slabs.
Nice lumber.
Great information thank you!
Thanks 👍
Do you know what species of ash it is? Its ash at the lumber yard typically one species or is it a group of species like red oak is?
Very nice stuff,
Thanks
Would like to see you show how to quarter sawn oak
Scott Nearing sounds like Ronald Reagan! lol That’s who I thought I was listening to at first. Puzzling 😂
Actually he was a communist. Or at least a socialist. He & his wife built their own stone houses & buildings, raised their own food & lived a long life.
Never heard of him.
He was a pretty interesting character, an old school hippy communist from the depression era that lived to be 100 travelling the world preaching pacifism and the simple life.
Any chance you give away, trade ir sell your offcuts? Some of the knots, busted edges or top slabs I would love to have to make things out of!
I have an ash coming up that has a hole where a limb was. Little bigger than that one.Seen ants coming out of it yesterday. Should be interesting. I'll do your method.
good deal, appreciate you watching, good luck with your timber,
Thats all I've been cutting it seems ash, some 30" across. Cut some for a new floor in our log home still drying it
Nice. Love sawing ash
How do you saw for 0 run out?
Why is the second cut flipped 180 from the first rather than 90? I have a manual mill, seems like less rotation to just rotate it 90 at a time? I'm sure there's a reason, I just don't understand it
sawyer preference,

I've been sawing grade lumber around 20 years now. 8 out of 10 times a bulge like that is hollow. Most of the time I find a nail in it. Great video
thanks Jeff, appreciate it,
Ash has interesting grain.
agreed
❤
Are you from Erwin
no,
I've got some red oak logs that I think would make good lumber & slabs, just wish I could find a sawmill near me that could do what you do. Nice Ash log sir!
thanks Robert,
Your intro was unexpected. Not recommended for you. Your channel is fine as is. Maybe have Bruno come in and say hi. :~)
Love watching you work but you waffle to much 11 minutes long on a 17 minute vid, what a waste of time.
Nate, please do less talking & more sawing
how about less complaining and more watching,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I love watching. I am a big fan,but you wasted all that time talking & less time sawing
well someone got some value out of it, it's not for everybody, what you say is wasteful might help someone,
you can always forward to the sawing part also,
Beautiful table top fill and covered with epoxy !
yes sir,
Beautiful table top fill and covered with epoxy !
