    Thank you this is exactly what I’ve been trying to figure out and this is the first video I’ve found that shows how to do it.
    I’ve watched hundreds of fiberglassing videos and this is the best automotive fiberglass fabrication channel on TH-cam.

    I have been building fiberglass race car parts for about 20 years now. It’s great someone took the time to show a little how to bc people have zero idea how this stuffs made

    Pretty nice wing man, did you design this by yourself or has it been done professionally designed. Just asking because those angles on the base are pretty sharp, looks like it would stir our the air a bit

    this was awesome. is there another how to on how you capped the ends and added rivnuts for the blade tl be mounted to the rest of your wing?!

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No there isn't. I just hollowed out the ends once the wing was trimmed to fit, then used car filler and a plastic template to hold the Rivnuts in place with their bolts while the complete ends dried, doing one end at a time.

    I plan on getting some pouring foam for a wing I have that’s hollow inside. Should I be worried about the foam breaking it since it’s already a completed wing?

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, don\
      't be worried. You will probably need to cut a 30mm hole in it to pour the foam in. Just make sure the wing has that hole at the top so the excess foam can escape, rather than over pressurize your job. I'd stand the wing up vertically & drill that hole in one end. It's easilt repaired with car body filler once the foam is done.

    • @ColbyChase24
      @ColbyChase24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      WJP004 do you happen to know what pound/kilogram density foam you used?

  • @RiazRJ
    @RiazRJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you used the fairing compound to give a better angle between the gel-coat and fibreglass, did you have to seal it or does the resin soak straight through?

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to give me a time reference so I know exactly what you're asking.

    • @RiazRJ
      @RiazRJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      WJP004 4:23

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its all done in a continuous, one step wet layup. The fairing compound is applied, them csm straight over it, then the rest of the resin & cloth. Fairing compound is based on vinylester resin, so it is compatable with the layup polyester resin and they merge into one.

    is the foam's bonding strong enough to hold the wing together? tempted to give this a go but I'd be quite concerned about the 2 halves not being held together fully

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You have obviously never worked with pouring foam & struggled to chisel off spillage when it hardens. Remember not only is this stuff super adhesive, it contacts the entire internal surfaces within the wing. This method would be WAY stronger than just edge gluing with anything. Foam " sandwiches" (2 sheets of aluminium glued together with pouring foam) have been used in the highest construction level in motorsport.. starting with the Chapparal I believe.

    Can you build a monocoque this way? (just with fiberglass and higher density pour foam)

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You can also just do it with sheet aluminium for flat panels, like Hal Sharp pioneered with his awesome & extremely innovative Chaparral CanAm sports cars.

    • @tedahn3539
      @tedahn3539 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I was wondering why there are so few, foam + fiberglass monocoque builds compared to tubular space frames, and carbon and or aluminum honeycomb monocoques.

    • @racerdude7730
      @racerdude7730 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would wanna use a pre preg carbon. This would work but it wouldn’t be as strong. Also you would need to make sure you alternate your weave in the direction you need it bc you would be amazed how much that changes the strength of a part. Most likely you wouldn’t have the tools at home to do a carbon monocoque bc you would need a vac system

  • @blackhuffy01
    @blackhuffy01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need a RC airplane wing software then you can make proper wing profile's that will generate lift.

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good idea for anyone wanting to go to that degree of design. I am certainly no aerodynamic engineer, but that wing profile was cut to particular specifications. The aim with a rear wing on a car is to create downforce, not lift. I'd have to leave it to the experts if wanting advice, but from what I've seen on the net so far there is a tremendously wide variety of views among them on automotive aerodynamics - many of which contradict each other.

    • @blackhuffy01
      @blackhuffy01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Different wing profiles produce certain amounts of lift at different speeds. You just turn the profile upside down for downforce. I'm not engineer either just studying to build my own hillclimb car

    can you do this with carbon fiber?

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you after the weight difference or the appearance?

    • @jameshowey7102
      @jameshowey7102 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WJP004 mostly appearance but the weight is nice too

    • @BillsBuildandRace
      @BillsBuildandRace  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can make a wing this way with carbon fiber, but the problem with going for the "natural" black cloth look is that it is a two piece construction. When painting you simply bog & sand the joins - but how you gonna hide them with no filler? The weight difference is minimal because you only need one layer of 225gm csm + one layer of 450gm csm with making the actual wing halves because the foam adds strength.
