📢Some people have alerted me to there being a high pitched noise in the audio of my videos recently, I tried to fix it in this one to the best of my abilities but please let me know if you hear it still! It won't be a problem going forward as it was a mic issue 😭 Also! Links to other knitting/fiber arts folks who have made similar videos are in the description & down below- let me know in the comments if you know of others! @knitsbymandy - th-cam.com/video/r1ab7sWhWew/w-d-xo.htmlsi=a1XCovqOrW4nl6Hk @midsummerknits (she has a couple but this is the latest!) - th-cam.com/video/gTw4QCrSnMI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Skexa8jUDentHyWq
my favorite knitting podcast channels like yours are the ones that don’t do clickbaity “knitting a sweater in 24h” or some crazy short timeframe. it really turns me off. i like learning about planning knits, pattern compilations, and FO/yarn/pattern reviews. and finding personalities that i would probably vibe with irl. when i was making content regularly 1 million views roughly equated $1k of adsense (which is based on your ad genre, tech gear genre n other types can garner much higher ad pay but i digress) or 1k views was $1 which is like NOTHING… barely any return on the time investment it took to film and edit tons of videos to achieve that. adsense is pennies but increased sponsorships would create better livable wage. but that takes a lot of cringey shilling and regular content which can turn into a chore bc it becomes a job. figuring out what to post on a set schedule eventually burnt me out creatively. i hope that you never get burnt out from this channel and that you continue to enjoy making your content bc i really enjoy watching you and listening to your thought process!! ❤
Very useful video, thank you! To be honest, I think reasonable knitting related ads are totally fine, at least for me. The amount of effort is put on planning, filming, editing, etc. is huge and people watch this content for free. Also if I take any sponsorships, I wont only be fine with a gift, but I will require an actual payment for the ad. With this approach, it will be less ads by default (most brands will keep searching for "gift"advertisement), and its a perfect additional source of actual incoe for a knitting youtube, which they deserve.
Thank you for all you do and share. I follow you for the knitting but also because you have a great sense of humor and it’s like listening to a friend. I usually quit following someone when I feel like the video has become an advertisement and I’m being sold yarn, project bags-whatever. Good luck with your color work. It’s really not hard. It’s like anything else in knitting-you need to get the muscle memory going. Then you’ll make mistakes off and on just like the rest of us. I think knitters sometimes make things sound more complicated than they actually are. Have fun!
I really enjoy your podcast. Your makes, your personality, your content. I am glad that it has provided nice community vibes for you and that you make a little bit of money back for your time to put back into the craft. I would give colorwork a go. It isnt that hard. Keeping even tension is the key. Floats can be a bit too long and not cause that much of a problem. You just dont want them to be too tight as there really isnt any fixing the puckering that results.
I follow and watch TH-camrs, like you, for their personality. I like interesting, quirky/funny, and knitters who knit the things I like to knit. Knitting videos for me are like listening to friends who knit, talk about their knitting and yarn.
I was doing a deeper dive in utube to try summer tops as normally I just knit woolens all year. Came across you and I enjoy your personality and you have a lovely, easy to hear voice. Thank you for sharing your time with us!
With knitting, you can almost always get the materials back - ie unravel it - to use for something else if you mess up or even just don't like the item. Sewing is too much jeopardy for me. Too high a chance of ending up thinking I wasted my money.
TH-cam is very fickle. I have been making videos for years pretty consistently and I’m still under 1000 subs and my average view counts are under 100. Just odd. But I keep going because I enjoy sharing what I make. Thank you for sharing all the information you did. It’s always fascinating to know the back end of more popular TH-cam channels.
Found this really interesting esp the financial side as most podcasters coyly avoid mentioning hard numbers. Colourwork really not that hard Jenny, just be careful with your tension and consistent with your dominant yarn. I usually make the CC the top thread but there’s no real right or wrong just do what works for you. I really enjoy your humour and authentic manner, love sharing time with you, cheers
Thank you for sharing! I've had a knit youtube now for 2.5 years, and I am not monetized. I'd like to get there eventually, just to say that I pulled it off, but I really make my channel for the fun I get out of it :) For me, I challenge myself to upload one video per month, and that keeps me busy enough, respect to you for being able to produce a video every week, its a hustle!
I'm really glad your video popped up on my feed. Thank you for your honesty - when i mentioned that I was thinking of starting a channel people immediately spoke about it being my new job, etc. I just wanted a hobby that put my focus on fiber arts and hopefully getting more projects done. When you said "God damn Temu" I subscribed 🤣 Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
Love your podcast and your "random" content. Thanks for sharing your fiber "travel" with us😊 Really loved your thoughts on effort vs. Product! Have a great fiber week🧶🎉
Wow!!! You just said you take out adds! I totally notice yours are less interrupted and some other videos I watch are cutting to adds all the time. Thank you!!
Thank you for your podcast. I enjoy it and hearing about your projects. You also have this down to earth honesty and sense of humor that is wonderful. It was interesting to hear how much you made from the ads. I also appreciate that you cut some of them out - one thing I can't stand is when ads come on every few minutes - thank you for keeping them to a minimum.
Congratulations on your first year! And thank you for sharing some of the specifics of TH-cam monetization. I have really enjoyed your channel from the beginning. I enjoy your sense of humor and that you’re honest about your skill level. I also enjoyed the episodes where you interviewed other podcasters. I can imagine the pressure to increase your income here would negatively affect your content. I’m excited for your future fiber episodes! 😊
Gratz for 1 year of knitting podcasts! Really like the vibe of your videos, feels like I am listening to a friend 😊 One tip for colorwork: I would recommend to start with a small item like a headband or mittens. First time I discovered colorwork, I made sock and I never finished them because my float tension was way to tight. But I am happy that I discovered that on a small project, not a large one 😅
I really enjoy just your chatty knitting videos and the like 'feature' ones aren't as big a draw to me. I'm excited for you to foray into colourwork though, it's my favourite type of knitting I think. Look forward to the new year's videos!
I have a bunch of color work yoke sweater patterns saved in my Ravelry Favorites that I think meet your "ski sweater" criteria. My third year knitting goal was to learn color work and I think I could make any of these now. Probably the most difficult color work I have done so far is Soldotna and the yoke of Birkin. Here's some of my Wish List sweaters: Sonder, Riddari, Treysta, Romo Sweater, Floe jumper, Rainier, Steinkriger, Flora, Esther sweater, Hassja sweater, Lopi, aftur, and Stopover (which is a minimal color work sweater in large gauge, easy, but bottom up). A couple of serious Ski sweater styles are Setesdal and Marius-genser rund sal. I enjoy your podcasts because you are very entertaining! 😊
Love all of your videos including this one! I’ve enjoyed the videos people have made about the monetary side of TH-cam. I decided to start a knitting/sewing channel in the fall because I wanted to try weaving but couldn’t really justify buying tools for yet another hobby 😂 so my initial goal was to see if I could get enough to offset the cost of a small loom. Now, however, I’m really enjoying the community aspect and it’s fun to have a small space to talk about my projects. Looking forward to seeing what 2024 will bring for you!
thank you! i think the video documentation format works better for some people - i can never get my brain together to post on ravelry or instagram regularly so i appreciate the space to talk on here like you said 💓
@@futurefiber being the fairly basic millennial that I am, I thought Instagram would be the most natural for me but it’s so much harder than I expected to get photos I like of my knitting and sewing 😂 so video it is!
Very interesting info re: monetization of TH-cam channel. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in being a TH-camr but I have always wondered how the money worked. Glad you are getting a decent amount of income, at least in Terms of being able to buy more yarn!
As someone who lives in New York I'm sure you have a little more access to brick and mortar yarn stores as appose to somewhere like Arizona for me. But I was wondering if you buy any yarn online and where it come from and what the usual turnaround date is for that? I really enjoy listening to your knitting podcast!
I usually don't follow knitting TH-camrs on Instagram because I feel like it kind of spoils podcasts for me. If I see the stories and photos about the project, seeing them again on TH-cam seems more like a deja vu.
I love watching your podcast, and it’s really interesting heating the Numbers. My day job is content creation 🥲 So why I want to be on social media during my free time as well is a mystery at this point. I think I’ll monetize my own podcast when I’m elligeble (not to long now), but I don’t expect heaps of money any time soon.

For me it's gone now! 👍🏻

I like your videos. You like your pacing and the variety of your projects. You popped up on my TH-cam feed about a month.
I really enjoy your videos and feel like your content is interesting.
I loved this… I started my TH-cam 1 month ago so thanks a million 💕 will follow you❤
Thanks for the money talk! I think that's super important! Also big thank you for the pattern giveaway from ladt year, my t-shirt is finally done!

loved this video, the temu emails are REAL!
they are out for blood w those emails 👁️
That grey sweater looks fabulous. Did you make it? May I know the pattern, please 😊
Ingrid sweater by petite knit :)
Prob not the best for a 1st time colorwork but I learned that you can get the patterns for the Danish Olympic Ski team official team sweaters O:
OK but like is this a sign for me to just dive into the deep end!! 🤔
100% I’m here for it. Doubles as a Halloween costume too if you need to 🤣 If you do it I’m soooo excited to see what year you pick 😍
did you changed something in your makeup? idk if it's the sunlight but it looks so pretty in this video
oohh i changed out some blush/eyeshadow to be paler and pinker, maybe that's it?? thank you tho
Didn’t know you were local to nyc!!! I love downtown yarns and maybe knitty city but besides that do you have any yarn store recommendations?? 😗
I really liked Brooklyn general store in BK but knitty citty and Downtown yarns are my usual go to since BK general store is so hard to get to 💀
You popped up on my feed a month ago. I would have watched you all year had you popped up earlier.
If I skip the ads do you get paid?
haha yes! skip all the ads if it lets you I still get paid the same

Just curious, do you get monetize from people, like me, that have TH-cam premium and don’t see ads?
yes! premium views still count as revenue!
Do you get a W-2 or a 1099?
a 1099 misc - adsense is treated as royalty and not "other income" aparently !
