Seriously. That’s the problem with so many movies and series these days. Everything is great. The marketing, the casting, the animation, the music, EVERYTHING!!! It’s just the writing that makes it difficult to rank highly. Makes me wonder what would happen if Unlucky Tug rewrote this era of the show, like how he did with the BWBA Era.

Just had a realization. Tug says Peter won’t be able to see it, but I believe he’s wrong. Now I’m not an over the top religious person, but I believe Peter is watching this from heaven. Rest In Peace Peter
I'm not incredibly religious, but this is why I like the idea of there being an afterlife. I like the idea that no matter what religion you believe in, friends and family can still see you succeeding. And I hope Peter is smiling up there, because we will never forget him
In my opinion there is one character where the Sharon Miller era always does a good job. And that character is Gordon. He was the only locomotive or road vehicle that was never brain dead or out of character in an episode or a movie. And we all know that the season 6 episode "Thomas the Jet engine" destroyed the friendship between Thomas and Gordon, but luckily the Sharon Miller era repaired the friendship. It's the only era where Gordon and Thomas are friends all the time. And not to mention the era fixed Edward. After the Hit era/New series ruined his character, the Sharon Miller era fixed his (with the exception of 2 episodes).
Oh man, I remember the first time I saw the Nitrogen era. It was painful... I rewatched two years ago, hoping MAYBE it'll be a better watch... I saw that episode where Thomas has this weird belief that he could control a giraffe and I realise "No, it's not gonna get better..." I think the worst episode was James In The Dark. The entire plot was ludicrous. Without that lamp, James has embarrassingly bad vision problems if he can't identify a train less than 10 feet away from him when they have their light on and they're talking to him. James may not be able to see them, but he also can't seem to recognise the voices of those he lives with... It's godawful, but that being said, if you have it on as background noise while you're doing something else (chores around the home, playing a video game, whatever), the experience isn't as bad as opposed to giving it you full attention.
Man, the ending with the Narnia music, the Tribute to Peter, and even that sponsorship gag, still gets me in the feels. It is such a crying shame that TH-cam nerfed the old channel with all the old comments, views and subscribers. But we still have Nick and his wonderful videos, and that's something to be thankful for.
The truth why the Nitrogen Era was written so abysmally in the first place has been under our noses the whole time people. According to Sam Barlow in a SIF interview, the reason the 3 strikes formula became so painstakingly apparent as the show went on following Seasons 8~12 is because it was the writers supposed "idea" of wanting a three act structured story. In all honesty... this actually makes sense now, it must've been pretty difficult to write stories with the amount of creative restrictions the series had at the time. The scripts being rushed as a result of the expectation of a new season every single year wasn't the sole reason for all the poor, formulaic writing after all... the writing crew were pretty much asked to write this way, including Sharon Miller. I can't believe i'm saying this... but i think we all owe her an apology, turns out she was just following orders this whole time. HIT themselves are the real reason why Nitrogen's writing was so bad. As it was the start of a new CGI era, they deliberately chose to add a new formulaic style to the writing in an attempt to freshen things up. I can see the good in what they were trying to do there but it was overall just a huge mistake that wasn't thought through well. Barlow also addressed the irritating "rhyming" issue, apparently the idea there was to try and preserve some of the literary heritage in the CGI series and give the storyteller a little more to do that just read stage directions. It was all meant with the best of intentions, but Barlow does indeed recognise how hated it became though, and for that he has my respect. However though, he continues by saying: *"Thomas is a notoriously hard show to write for."* which to that i say nonsense. Thomas & Friends isn't difficult to write for whatsoever, the foundation for the appeal of the franchise is clear as crystal, your not writing for anything super complex or academy award worthy here, your just writing simple stories about trains with faces doing semi-realistic train things on an island that coincides with events in real life and obeys actual realistic consequences, all you need is a good solid outline and knowledge of the established lore and true original versions of the characters. Simple as. Nothing left to say except this was literally the last video i watched on TH-cam for the night before going to sleep and waking up next morning to discover the channel got terminated... totally not awkward. 😅 R.I.P Peter. You were one of the good ones. 💔 #PositivityForPeter
Imagine being told in 2011 when we were all going mad over how bad series 15 was that the Thomas franchise would in 10 years time become a baby cartoon where the engine jump off the track and would be voiced by children and the narrator would be axed!!!! Mattel makes series 15 look like series 1 and that is tragic!!! And Peter you will forever more live in Thomas fans hearts 💙
@@GuyKnowles doesn’t feel like 13 years ago but luckily 2 years later the show for a short period got good again even tho it’s toy sales at the same time started to slip down
It ain’t Sharon Miller’s fault as her works like TGD, HOTR, and BMM were good. I believe HiT forced the three strikes formula just to only make money off the franchise.
18:32 I agree with this entire chapter. I remember when I first heard they rebooted the show and replaced it as a 2-D show and my heart sank. To this day, I will never see Mattel the same way again for what they did to such a childhood favorite of mine. What they did left a hole in my heart that can never be filled. Not to mention, BWBA brought the show back on decline after 5 seasons of gradual improvement after the nitrogen era, and the AEG reboot killed the show. At this point I just can’t deal with Mattel anymore about this stuff. I agree completely with the unlucky tug about this, and this video said it all. (PS rest in peace Peter.)
Now I'm interested in how you're basically gonna talk about this era in The Thomas Retrospective in the future. Also, please bring back the chat reaction video if you can. It was hilarious!
The video of Tug and friends reacting to these episodes was absolutely iconic. I rewatched it so many times that I can remember the funniest lines by heart: "Say 'health and safety'. Refuse to elaborate. Leave." "You put this in your top 5, Nick." "Does Charlie just not do work?" "He's a freeloader!" "No, he just goes around bullying old people." "HE'S A TALKING BUS! SAY HIS NAME! TELL HIM TO STOP, DUDE!" "They were riding in Bertie the whole time! And the hand car! The pump car came with them!" "Dowager Hatt can't ride with the peasant working class."
Yeah I hope The Lucky Tug videos were archived too but if not then that will be lost to time unfortunately I also used to come back to that video regularly I think it's hilarious
I think the limitations of working with only models does well for creativity and storytelling. Once you've got endless possibilities with a sandbox like CGI, it's easy to take things too far or make things downright silly. The fact they could tell the original stories with some hand made bits of whatever just makes it great.
But there's so little you can do with hand made models, CGI or any animation for that matter can do lots more than you think, I mean I don't know how they would've pulled amazing projects like SLOTLT if they only used models.
I always saw the same camera angles was a nod to the model series. It adds to the fact HIT tried to make it clear to the audience that this was the same show but under a new medium. However, unlike how Arc changed things up a bit as the era continued, they did nothing to veer off the “same ol’, same ol,”
Wow we’re already at this video? Wow, Tug has been CRANKING! I have a feeling Peter did see this video from the other side, and I hope he is happy with your work, man.
Probably one of my favorite videos. It managed to critique the show without being all cynical. Also, the beginning tribute to Peter always hits in the feels.
I remember being like 7 or 8, I had a dream their mouths started moving out of nowhere and they started dancing, it actually scared me. So much so that I vividly remember what it looked like in that dream. After that, I swore I’d they ever changed it into an animated show, I’d stop watching. I didn’t watch much Thomas when I was in high school, but sure enough, I was 16 or 17, and I saw an add for the CGI Thomas, and I was PISSED! But, it’s not nearly as bad as it looked in my dream, I was picturing late 90s / early 2000s CHEAP CGI, and to their credit, it’s not ALL bad!
Glad to see this video again, I really liked this video, it was so dang enjoyable and funny seeing you react to this horrible era of thomas and friends. Sure got a bunch of laughs out of me. We Salute you Peter, may you rest in piece. Edit: also I wish the Lucky Tug would come back lol
one of the greatest downsides of youtube's tomfuckery is the loss of that lucky tug side channel reaction video I don't know how many times I watched it and it cracked me up every single time I think that one "you guys better not be watching jumping jobi wood without me" moment will live in my brain rent free till the day I die
I was 5 years old when the show fully switched to CGI, & even as a kid I always thought Thomas was the stand out to the rest, when those “catch up with what’s on Milkshake” segments came on TV that showed clips from Peppa Pig, Angelina Balarina & so on. Nitrogen definitely set the style going forward. Like, could you imagine if after season 12, they went straight to AEG animation. Thomas would not have lasted for another 15 years, I can tell you that with confidence.
I do actually have some favorite Season 14 and Season 15 episodes. Those episodes are: 1. Victor Says Yes (Because we got to see Victor as an Engine who gets overwhelmed by too much work, and not overworked) 2. Merry Winter Wish (One of the best Christmas episodes in the Miller era) 3. O the Indignity (Because I feel like that should have been Scruff's debut, and the last episode felt very non-canon) 4. James to the Rescue (Because we got to revisit James' rivalry with Toby, just like in the Railway Series) 5. Surprise, Surprise (The other best Christmas episode in the Miller era) 6. Stop That Bus! (Because Sharon Miller's main character choice was very good. I still don't like the "Shake Shake Bridge", but I'm glad Sir Topham Hatt sees how dangerous it is.) 7. Stuck on You (Because we got to see Butch as the main character, and believe it or not, he actually is a character made by Britt Allcroft herself) Runners-Up: 1. James in the Dark (Because we did get to see Allicia Botti in concert again) 2. Charlie and Edward (Because of the backwards reference to Bertie's Chase) 3. Toby and the Whistling Woods (Because it feels like one of the only Miller era episodes to be Halloween themed) 4. Henry's Health and Safety (Because I think it's better to see Henry as overcautious, instead of him worrying all the time) 5. Big Belle (Because we revisited Arlesdale End) (Also, the Miller era is NOT the worst. The AEG era was the worst.)
The reason why the show went full CGI was due to a small budget. As CGI became more and more popular and model sets became more and more costly, HIT entertainment soon realized that they wouldn't have the budget to continue using the model sets and soon decided to transition completely over to CGI to cut costs.
Plus, CGI has it’s advantages the Models couldn’t pull off due to limitations with the live action animation. This was also when UK Tax Animation Breaks were happening in the late 2000s, so they had to transition to CGI this way as their intended Model-CGI Hybrid would make the models too costly.
@@growlie2676 the model series was always more watchable and looked better. the CGI era took a while to look good and then BWBA ruined it with body motions...
@@woobgamer5210 I don't see how since the characters only move their eyes. At least with the CG they aren't just moving their eyes around plus they are way more expressive. I don't care about body movement. It makes sense as they're alive.
16:57 I'd argue that Don't Bother Victor is a two-strikes-and-you're-out episode. The reason being is because in every other episode of this era, the protagonist makes the same mistake three times before realizing they've screwed up. In Don't Bother Victor, however, Peter Sam only makes the same mistake twice. He's told that Duncan's rods are rattling and races off to find him, but runs out of coal before he can get to him. If this were a standard three-strikes episode, we would've actually seen Peter Sam get to Duncan, screw up with him, and then realize he was wrong the whole time. But that doesn't happen, therefore, I rest my case.
Great look into the Nitrogen era, I think the fact you’ve only watched a few episodes to represent your thoughts on the era as a whole says it all, if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, the episodes have little variety and are not worth watching other than to look back at the state of Thomas in those times, no growth or improvement between seasons unlike the Brenner era, the movies for this era ranged from great to horrendous, but the show itself… just… boring, and mediocre, strong contrast there, R.I.P Peter, we’ll never forget you
10:43 Actually Tug, The 2015 Reboot Wasn’t Bob The Builders’ Sole CGI Incarnation, It Was Actually The Second, The True First CGI Version Of Bob The Builder Was The 2010-2011 Side Series, Ready Steady Build
We need to put up a well put togethered report about multiple people wanting to self-terminate because of season 25. Also I mostly grew up on the HIT and Nitrogen era up until I turned 13 and watched the Brenner and classic era much more.
It also kind of suck that the cgi era never brought back any of the hit era characters like Molly, Neville, Murdock, Arthur, Mighty Mac, or the other ones because they could have made some fun and unique story's with them.
I had a realization All Engines Go is 'what if we tried to be like My Little Pony Friendship is Magic', and failed because MLPFIM actually respected its audience, both old and new, everything worked in universe and also had good episodes
12:39 The lazy formulaic awful 'clearly the writer does not give a shit what they are putting to paper because they see it as just a dumb kids show' kind of writing
@@Dead_Channel_Pretty_Much There are other problems too like lack of beloved characters like Duck, Donald, Douglas, Oliver, etc and also lack of continuity or actually research on past events.
Truth be told, I haven't watched a single CGI era episode. That was the time when I grew out of the show and I only just finished my watch/rewatch of season 8 a week ago. But based on things I've heard, I am not excited for this era.
You're probably lucky. I watched the CGI episodes as a kid and I quickly bored of the show. I might not have regained interest had my parents not bought me that VHS tape
I totally agree with you. The Nitrogen Era has such shitty writing. Because of this, I refuse to acknowledge this era and most of the episodes from the era are 100% fictional in universe and not apart of the continuity. Some stuff is canon or did happen but most of them aren't. I prefer the Brennersaince myself.
Idk how these episodes were accepted by the writing staff. I mean, who's even in charge of producing these episodes. It's like they've never had experience in writing decent storylines in contrast to the model era. Also I find it ironic that fans could create better content than a whole studio. Then again, they're not confined to corporate mandates
10:02 I think this is a reference to when Thomas first came to the island in "The Adventure Begins" when Edward corrected Thomas to call the fat controller "Sir" and call him "Sir" only. Everyone only calls him "Sir", and he prefers being called that way. So when they called him "Boss", that is why Sir Topham was very offended XD.
I think that season 16 its the best of the Nitrogen era.I like episodes like:Whif's wish, happy birthday sir, welcome Stafford, don't bother Victor,Percy and calliope and the other's
10:01 I *think* with the "boss gag" whoever that is was supposed to call him "sir." I mean, he is literally a sir anyway, but even if he was not, "boss" sounds to casual or American maybe to some more uptight British people. If you're American yourself I can see how the joke makes bugger all sense to you. Source: am British and have had/seen some teachers and scout leaders etc get pissy for not being called the exact right term of respect, even it was still a widely accepted term of respect they were called.
I always felt like Mattel benefited from what HiT learned as they transitioned Thomas to cgi. If it wasnt for HiT, Matell wouldnt have had its temporary Thomas Renaissance.
I grew up watching the model era, the hybrid era, some of the Brenner era, and the Sharon Miller era. While looking back at the Sharon Miller era, yes, it’s bad writing wise, but it at least tried to be faithful to their previous source material instead of acting so nuts about what happens in the episodes. Plus despite the episodes being one-trick ponies, they at least had some charming elements, those of which you listed in this video. However, there was also one other thing that the era did (that also the Brenner era did) that kept me watching it was seeing old characters return at times like Diesel 10, Butch, and even the narrow gauge engines. It was one of those things that helped me stay connected up to the Brenner era, where I was still connected to the show.
This is the era that was on TV when my kids were young. I'd grew up with the first two seasons in the 80s and had great memories that this era really soured when watching with my kids. I had to dig out my old VHS copies of the first two seasons from my mum's attic to show my kids what this should _could_ be. RIP Peter!
Back in 2010 when I was the Clearwater Features Thomas kid, both me and my dad tried watching the CGI version together after hearing about the change. I was bored out of my mind and went back to watching the Clearwater Features version of the show. My dad finally remembered the change actually existing, let’s just say he was not impressed with the voices the characters were given and the writing in the Miller and BWBA era. Hero of the Rails and the 2015 RWS movie got some heavy praise from us. Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, my dad would invite his friends to see the Pixar movies with him because he was intrigued by the computer animation. And he was also interested in the CGI Thomas, but the hype was short lived. Looking back at it now myself, it was really interesting and it almost felt like a different show to me.
My dad told me that back in 2003 when he was like 24, he saw Finding Nemo with his friends mainly because he wanted to see how 3D animation would evolve.
Seriously I swear in this point of the series, the narrator sounds like he’s losing the will. But this series will be better than all engines go because at least this series stuck to the charm of the show. They probably wrote it for babies because babies like consistency so they constantly wrote the stories the same way for babies to understand. But the writers didn’t understand that Thomas wasn’t a baby show. It was something for everyone to love. I’m a beginner fan because I didn’t grow up watching Thomas. But it grew on me and now I understand , respect and love the show. If only the writers understood this too.

5:03: I would like to point out that, even though it was originally theatrical film exclusive, the idea of having the characters given their own voices felt all the more satisfying, because that would help kids understand who is talking in the story, and whom they're addressing to; and this is an element actually carried over from different countries, most notably with the Japanese dubs of the original seasons having specific voices linked to specific characters: th-cam.com/video/OrNJ6MTUpeU/w-d-xo.html (This is the only video example I can find of the Japanese dub, as no one bothered to present it as intended; either that, or Mattel wanted to copyright everything).
3:18: I was actually born in 2008. So, I give honourable mentions to HIT Entertainment, Nitrogen Studios, Mattel, & Andrew Brenner for making the CGI series that I’ve grown up alongside for 15 years, now. But, I take two points off of Mattel’s honourable mention. Those two points being producers (at the time) Ian McCue & Micaela Winter, because THEY were the ones that came up with Big World! Big Adventures! (2018). The movie and the show. Both of which I’m not 100% as big of a fan of either. But, after seeing a few episodes of All Engines Go!, I’m finding myself actually appreciating a few things in BW!BA! But, I don’t want to go into detail, because, Nic pretty much did a review video on that topic already: th-cam.com/video/x340CrIryFA/w-d-xo.html

I always thought it was a language/cultural barrier thing. Like if Hiro called him “Hatt-sama”, because that’s what he would have been called in Japan
Yeah, it was a thing in the adventure begins when Edward has to help Thomas say it right, the engines must refer to him as Sir / Sir Topham Hatt

I've seen a few clips of AEG, and while I think it's laughably awful, I'd rather pick that thing over the majority of the CGI Miller era. This stuff was just painful... In case it comes up, BWBA was hands-down better than S13-16. Easily more entertaining than them.

I saw that episode where Thomas has this weird belief that he could control a giraffe and I realise "No, it's not gonna get better..."
I think the worst episode was James In The Dark.
I love that episode, it’s stupid, but I don’t know why I just like it.
At this point, the only way to enjoy the writing of these seasons is to do so ironically.

R.I.P Peter. You were one of the good ones. 💔 #PositivityForPeter

It ain’t Sharon Miller’s fault as her works like TGD, HOTR, and BMM were good. I believe HiT forced the three strikes formula just to only make money off the franchise.
Her writing on Diesel 10 ruins his character as a evil villain that's for sure.
That’s true, but somehow she managed to fix her mistakes with some other characters.

The video of Tug and friends reacting to these episodes was absolutely iconic. I rewatched it so many times that I can remember the funniest lines by heart:
"Say 'health and safety'. Refuse to elaborate. Leave."
"You put this in your top 5, Nick."
"Does Charlie just not do work?"
"He's a freeloader!"
"No, he just goes around bullying old people."
"HE'S A TALKING BUS! SAY HIS NAME! TELL HIM TO STOP, DUDE!"
"They were riding in Bertie the whole time! And the hand car! The pump car came with them!"
"Dowager Hatt can't ride with the peasant working class."
Yeah I hope The Lucky Tug videos were archived too but if not then that will be lost to time unfortunately
I also used to come back to that video regularly I think it's hilarious

I do actually have some favorite Season 14 and Season 15 episodes. Those episodes are:
1. Victor Says Yes (Because we got to see Victor as an Engine who gets overwhelmed by too much work, and not overworked)
2. Merry Winter Wish (One of the best Christmas episodes in the Miller era)
3. O the Indignity (Because I feel like that should have been Scruff's debut, and the last episode felt very non-canon)
4. James to the Rescue (Because we got to revisit James' rivalry with Toby, just like in the Railway Series)
5. Surprise, Surprise (The other best Christmas episode in the Miller era)
6. Stop That Bus! (Because Sharon Miller's main character choice was very good. I still don't like the "Shake Shake Bridge", but I'm glad Sir Topham Hatt sees how dangerous it is.)
7. Stuck on You (Because we got to see Butch as the main character, and believe it or not, he actually is a character made by Britt Allcroft herself)
Runners-Up:
1. James in the Dark (Because we did get to see Allicia Botti in concert again)
2. Charlie and Edward (Because of the backwards reference to Bertie's Chase)
3. Toby and the Whistling Woods (Because it feels like one of the only Miller era episodes to be Halloween themed)
4. Henry's Health and Safety (Because I think it's better to see Henry as overcautious, instead of him worrying all the time)
5. Big Belle (Because we revisited Arlesdale End)
(Also, the Miller era is NOT the worst.

Going Cg was the best decision ever. It's now watchable.
@@growlie2676 the model series was always more watchable and looked better.
the CGI era took a while to look good
and then BWBA ruined it with body motions...
Another problem with this era is that the character of authority just suddenly appears out of nowhere. Not all episodes do that, but most do.
This era never ever said: "GO F YOURSELF" to the fans like BWBA & All Engines Go...
But not everybody hated BWBA!
Besides, WE should be the ones telling Mattel "GO F**K YOURSELVES!". And also comment, #ToHellwithMattel!

But it grew on me and now I understand , respect and love the show. If only the writers understood this too.

I grew up with this era when i was bron in 2009 and i loved and it wasnt because of the lazy writing because this era made me like thomas because he still haved his core appeal which is the realistic world
Same… people think that writing is everything when the Nitrogen era stuck as hard as they could to the model series models.
Sodor was modeled originally. Was NEVER, EVER, EVER, supposed to be CGI...JUNK!
Not to mention how they never gave Edward (expect James in the dark), James (expect James in the dark), Henry, Gordon, and Emily lamps at night
At 8:28, why is Thomas pulling two grey works unit coaches..?
Sharon Miller Really Needs To Improve Her Writing.
Also Rest In Peace Peter/Crazy Caboose Creations, Fly High Buddy…
