2:45 Shows why you are a True teacher of outback skills, Back in the days of old, people carried Char made from plant materials..Cotton or Linen cloth was a luxury to have, not to be cut up and made into youtube fire starter..lol... Keep up the Great work..Have a Great Day

I like to add to my kits at least one gallon zip lock bag as not only a container for food stuff, but to keep things dry, and to gather X and Y. X and Y could be edible wild food sources or tinder, water to bring back or to catch from my filter. Never cross contaminate uses of these, but they toll up small and have no weight, so I like to carry several scattered around.
Love all of your videos, Blackie. Thank you so much for taking the time, and enduring the expenses to offer the world your knowledge. Truly good character, from a good character.

    Great series Blackie!!
I was a Boy Scout back in the late 1960s and mid 1970s, and yes we had to start a fire and cook a meal like you mentioned!

Great video Blackie, your idea makes more sense to me about just making char from punk wood instead of worrying about having cotton to make it. Got me thinking of different options. Thanks! 👍

My Blackbird haversack arrived today. I am deeply impressed by the quality of this piece of gear. Over and over again I was blown away by attention to detail and craftsmanship. Thank you so much, Blackie, for bringing this product to market. I’m proud to be an extremely satisfied customer and support you in all the work you do. Great job!

I am in snow country. I carry a metal coffee can with my homemade, wire handle for cooking and melting snow for water. I need a bit more capacity than my canteen cup. Thanks for a fine video.

The black bird haversack is a container too. Part of the container category is for carrying gear.
So the category is a little broader than discussed. Great stuff

Hi Blackie, my favorite container is a cheap stainless steel lunchbox with lid and handle. fits in the cargo pouch of my smock or pants or the outer pouch of my vesh meshok or... basically anywhere. I had a canteen cup before (I still have it, but it's now merely used for coffee or soups and if I could have only one, I'd ditch it and take the lunchbox) That lunchbox saw daily use when I lived in the woods for almost a year, I know what it can do.

Thanks for the reminder that what you use depends on your situation. Week long backpacking trip: take that nice cook set. Day hike: Nalgene or metal water bottle nested into a metal cup. Minimal emergency pack: a nice sized piece of folded aluminum foil that can be shaped into a reasonably fire safe container if needed. Pioneer reenactors: pack your supplies in a small metal pail.

You know Blackie, I trust you when you discuss equipment and what works/doesn't work. I do so because it's obvious you spend time out in the field testing your kit and refining it until you know the ins and outs. I have a hard time trusting people who's kits are sparkling clean and look unused.

Single wall stainless or double wall? LOL Got everybodys attention! I do use a single wall for ANY boiling or use over fire. NEVER use a double wall over heat! What I do use a double wall for is keeping water WET in overnight North Woods winter camping. I can't drink freeshly boiled water and having unfrozen water in the morning when I get up is a pleasure. I know I could put a bottle of hot water in my sleeping bag, but it does get cold overnght at -10 to -20 degrees. Carrying both in the wintertime has served me well.

I just added a Swiss mess kit to my collection. Extremely well made as one might expect from the Swiss, with a third vessel or cup that fits inside. I might keep it with my bug out bag in my trunk with some dehydrated soup and some buckwheat inside it for emergencies.

I have 5 Swiss ponchos (5 for $20 ten years ago) that are no good for rigging a shelter like with an American style poncho (I could gorilla tape two together...😐) Guard that mess kit with your life. Those are top notch.

My kits are heavy on water, water processing, fire building, shelter. A canteen cup is one of the most valuable pieces of kit that a person could have.

I also use my trusty stainless GI issue canteen cup for boiling water for potability. I also have a 25 oz single walled stainless canteen bottle that I can put in the fire & boil water if needed. I also have my Sawyer water filter and purification tablets... Basically just going to use my "drinking" water for Coffee and hot "breakfast" instant Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, or Grits... and of course, drinking.

I live and camp down stream, with golf courses and home owners the use chemicals on their lawns, I don't think boiling is good enough so I filter and boil my water.
