Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Kansas's musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.
Hi both I don’t remember Kansas, omgosh this is the music from the last episode of 17 seasons of my favorite show ‘SUPERNATURAL’ . This is brilliant, love it…. A fantastic upload ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ahh, the Winchester boys. I watched up until about season 7, then I drifted away for some reason. I keep meaning to go back to it, but I'd have to start again as it's been so long.
Written for the Vietnam Vets who returned with disastrous PTSD. Knowing this makes the variations in instumentation brilliant...showing the confusion, anger, craziness PTSD engenders.
That may be your interpretation of the meaning of the song, but Kerry Livgren never made such a statement. He said he was writing about his own spiritual search.
Kansas, Styx, Boston, Foreigner, Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Todd Rundgren, Jackson Browne, Steve Miller Band, Rush, and so many more kept us 70’s teens very happy.
Long blonde haired guy is Kerry Livgren. He wrote the song and you can see him here playing both lead guitar and keyboards. Rich Williams also on lead guitar is also switching back and forth on electric and acoustic guitars. Extremely talented band. Bass and drums are top notch, first class as well
the really funny thing is Kerry said they were at the end of their practice session and were about to breakdown the drums when he said, wait a minute, I have one more song I just wrote called Carry on my Wayward Son which became their first big breakout song that put the band on the map.
I would say the best definition of this kind of sound is, Progressive southern rock. Years after this you could hear a some similar approaches like with the band 38 Special. But contemporary to Kansas it was a band called The Dixie Dregs. They were similarly quite Progressive with more violin, but they never got as popular
Kansas is classic rock royalty, mates! I didn't get to see them live until the early 80s, but it was in a very old, Victorian Gothic theater beside the Mississippi River. Sooo good! Dust In The Wind, Point of No Return...nice contrasting songs.
Great reaction. You really need to see the video of them doing Dust in the Wind. These 2 are my favorite Kansas songs. The lyrics of both songs are incredible along with the talented musicians and harmonies. Amazing talent!
One of my all-time favorite songs and bands. Dust in the wind, next please. Even if you don't react just give a listen for your own enjoyment and to see their diversity. Great reaction guys enjoyed it thoroughly. 😃😃🤗
A time when auto tune didnt exist! Saw them live. All of them a great musician in their own right. Robbie (RIP) was a phenomenal violin player and vocalist. World class band! Check out Dust in the Wind and my favorite Portrait. : )
The band member who wrote it was having a spritual/ existential crisis and tried to capture it in song, that's why so many philosophical turns and metaphors. Dust in the Wind is another massive classic of theirs from that era (I 'm probably about the 72nd to mention it, so far).
One of the biggest songs ever recorded was Dust in the Wind by Kansas. You may also enjoy the song "The Wall". I saw them live in the early 90's and they were incredible.
Ahhhh…..the music of the 70’s…😘🥰✌️. Steely Dan is another good American band with hits like, Reelin’ in the Years, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Do it Again. All are winners in my book. Enjoyed guys!
One of the classic rock bands of the 1970's A blend of a few styles of rock. Probably their next most-played song is Dust in the Wind, which is also fantastic! It's funny adults when my mom was a teenager said, "No one will want to listen to a 40-year-old rock singer." Well, these guys and countless others(UK artists as well)are still selling out concerts in their 70s. With a fan base that crosses generations. I grew up listening to just about every genre of music, so my tastes are quite eclectic.
Kansas was well known for many tempo and rythm changes in only one song. In some of them there were enough ideas for a whole other album. Best example is “Magnum Opus“ from the same album as "Carry on..." It's pure prog ! I love it ! They have all I love together : Hard Rock, electronic vibes, jazzy and bluesy tones. As mashed up as the look of the members is their music. Their only manco : It's not easy to dance to their music.
This is one of my all time favorite bands. I've seen them live so many times over the years since the 70's and through just before the pandemic hit. I enjoyed every show! Great music!
Any song from this album, “Leftoverture” is incredible!! I was 8 or 9 when this came out in 1976 and it still holds its own!!! BTW, Voiceplay did a solid on their interpretation of this song!! Kudos!!
Kansas - Carry On , Wayward Son Music Video! Steve Walsh- lead singer , Keyboards and Bongo Drums! Robby Steinhardt - Tambourine & Backing Vocals Phil Ehart - Drums Rich Williams - Acoustic and Electric Guitar Kerry Livgren - Electric Guitar Dave Hope - Bass Guitar
The hairy tambourine player/singer. Is Robby Steinhardt. He passed away last year R.I.P. He is also the violin player in the band and is largely responsible for their sound. He put out a wonderful solo record just before he died called No Longer In Kansas. Other Kansas must hears are Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Magnum Opus and Song For America. Cheers
Dust in The Wind is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. Makes me emotional every time I hear it and I've been around a long time (64yrs).
Kansas are musical geniuses beloved worldwide they filled stadiums in the United States Europe South America Brazil Australia everywhere. ❤️👏In their early days they opened for Queen.
While their song “Dust in the Wind” is well known it really doesn’t sound much like what the band really sounds like nor much like 99% of their music. This band rocks! Check out their song “Child of Innocence”
Many groups in 50's and 60's wore suits or matching suits, comes the 70's and that stopped and musicians "let their freak flags fly" in protest of war😎
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio. "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes....all the old classics from my youth and all amazing! However, Wayward Son probably has one of the best syncopated rift sections in any rock song ever produced!
Many excellent songs and still making great new music. I live in Kansas, Kerry Livgren guitarist and primary song writer lives a quiet life a few hours away from me.
The audio for this is the studio version of the song. It is matched up with live concert videos. I've seen some of these where the leader singer has different clothes on in different clips. This is not to take away from the talent of the band/musicians as I love Kansas (also check out "Point Of Know Return"). I just want to point out that it is not the actual live audio.
70's music it was and still is the best but then again, I'm partial having grown up in the 70's lol. I have 3 favorite songs. Kansas Carry on Wayward Son, Pink Floyd Us and Them and Whipping Post the Allman Brothers all from the 70's. Loved your reaction fellas.
As a teenager in N Indiana, there was a great album rock station out of Niles, MI. They would play entire albums sometimes. The 70s were awesome time for rock.
Glad you guys picked this song to listen to. A great song of the 70's! Anyone into rock music needs to hear this song. But you guys talked right over the best lyrics of this song that elevates it to legend status. And words our society needs to heed right now, and for generations to come. Masquerading as a man with a reason My charade is the event of the season And if I claim to be a wise man, well It surely means that I don't know
You interestingly got the impression that they were a collective from other groups. The original band members were all in the same graduating class of Topeka West High School in Topeka, Kansas.
Glad you reviewed this one. This is my all time favorite progressive rock song. The 70's was the decade of Progressive rock, which is characterized by the change ups in melody lines and tempo/rhythms, but as you heard, somehow it all goes together very nicely. If you'd like to hear what I would call progressive rock on steroids, I suggest Roundabout by the group Yes. The musicianship is superb!
RIP Big red, Robbie Steinhardt. Violin and vocals. The lead singer (also keyboards and bongos), is Steve Walsh. Kerry Livgren has always had hair so blond that it looks almost white.
Like Elaine, I recognised this as the theme from the TV series 'Supernatural'. Not my usual genre, but I grew to like it after hearing it so often. Never heard the entire song before though, so that was new! VERY 70's. Cool.
@EnderOllie 4 Supernatural is not something I have watched, so we had no idea about that. I watched a couple of episodes recently of "The Umbrella Academy" and the playlist in that is non-stop, the show is pretty good fun too.
@BritPopsReact I enjoyed The Umbrella Academy and a big part of that was because of the soundtrack. It's super quirky, which I love in a TV show, and I really enjoyed the characters of 'Five' and 'Klaus'. 😁
Kansas has quite a few huge hits, and I'd agree with you that "Dust in The Wind" is probably their second most famous next to this song "Carry On" and since you said you were looking to explore more great tunes from the US, I'd like to recommend one of the best southern rock bands of the 60's and 70's. "Creedence Clearwater Revival - Born On The Bayou (Live)" (by the channel: Edwardo Montenegro M1) this video has the best sound quality (in my opinion) John Fogerty has some amazing pipes...this is magical stuff guy. lol "ear candy"🎸🔥
One of the first USA prog albums (Leftoverture) I bought when the Virgin stores opened in the 1980's and one I still listen to still. This track is unusual as it doesn't feature the late Robby Steinhartd's violin playing, which was a unique feature of the Kansas sound.
Since you're delving a bit into American history, you should react to their song, "Song for America". It's a fantastic example of Progressive Rock and gives a quite poetic general history lesson in American continental expansion.
I don't know how much American music from the 70's you've listened to, but it was the best decade for music! You should definitely follow up with Dust In The Wind by Kansas. Like the other commenter said, it'll show you their diversity. Then maybe give The Allman Brothers song Frankenstein a try. Lol You'll flip!
My dad was a teenager in the 70's and he'd make my bro and I I do chores to 70's music. Once he let me listen to the Spice Girls and he laughed his ass off when I told him they were American because they sang in English😂😂 I was 7!
Great reaction, thanks for sharing. Steve Walsh vocals, harmonies, organ, bongos; Robbie Steinhardt, vocals, harmonies, tamborine and violin; Kerry Livgren lead guitar, rhythm guitar, classical guitar, composer, lyricist; Phil Ehart on drums; Rich Williams and Dave Hope. But their lineup changed over the years. Kerry Livgren is playing piano and guitar on this song. They have tons of other progressive rock songs over a long period of time. Chris
Love kansas!! Enjoying your reactions Guys👍 Please do a reaction to "Journey" They will not disappoint! Steve Perry was their lead singer. The greatest voice of any band in my opinion.
I have had the extreme good fortune to have seen KANSAS Live 4 times. Phil Ehart is my Favorite Drummer. He plays melodies not just rhythm patterns. Every member is a musical GENIUS. This song is usually extra long and a crowd favorite to close their shows. Steve Walsh is Keyboards and a great vocalist. Robby plays Violin like NOBODY else. Kerry on Guitar is phenomenal along with Rich and Dave….AWESOME performance every time.
I didn't know Kansas until I watched their doc. This was from the 70s. You've gotta do Dust in the Wind. Such a great song. I believe the big guy died a year or two ago. Might be wrong. Thought I saw him in a memoriam. No violin in this one.
Hello Gentlemen! If you stay in the way back machine, Marshall Tucker Band "Fire on the Mountain", Gordon Lightfoot "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald", The Grateful Dead "Ripple"., Joan Baez "Diamonds and Rust". ALL HAVE BEAUTIFUL ACOUSTIC GUITAR PLAYING! Too many great ones to list.
@Chuey's Mama Hello and hope you are all doing well. We enjoyed this one and nice to see the artists from back in the day. We will be doing more soon and you have given us some interesting ones to continue the journey. Cheers for now
Gentlemen? BP1 How have you not heard this song? This is the anthem for all men looking for recognition from absent fathers. My father is still alive and we never talk, by his choice as much as mine, not out of malice but just in not being there. The nod to Icarus we long to touch the sun, or son, but we fall before we can. One of the greatest songs of all time. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
HI Jskew... I don't know how I ve not heard the song... i didn't even know Kansas.... we are only exposed to media playlist, not my era, but I enjoyed this and we shall be recording a followup shortly :)
Wolfman on the tambourine was there to be the hype-man for the band, I bet. The actual lead singer was too damn BUSY playing 2 instruments while singing, lol
Kansas in the early years was a war zone between those wanting alcohol and those against drinking. Carry Nation was famous in Kansas with her band of women against alcohol....so, the words are mocking Carry, telling her "I'm your wayward son", "there will be peace when you are done"."Lay your weary head to rest, don't you cry no more"..saying she's the one causing the problem, another song of theirs, "Dust in the Wind" tells so much about Kansas, where the constant wind sweeps across the land, always dust in the air....You should review Credence Clear Water Revival, their song "Have You Ever Seen the Rain"......super song...
I don't know who has done reaction to STYX yet but maybe do a reaction to Suite Madame Blue.. they're probably currently touring with Kansas as they did a lot in yesteryear
Check out Song For America, Your Reason To Be, The Wall, Magnum Opus, Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Hold be On, Cheyenne Anthem, Lamplight Symphony, Point Of No Return. All classics of Kansas!♥️✌️
Fantastic band with a unique prog sound. This song is more of a straight out rock banger. Singer Steve Walsh plays keyboards (and bongos), lead guitarist Kerry Livgren plays piano, Robbie Steinhart plays violin but not on this, just vocals, Rich Williams.....guitar, Dave Hope....bass and Phil Erhart.....drums. Multi talented band. For an example of their prog genius try 'Magnum Opus' or 'Journey From Mariabronn'.
I loved their song called, The Wall.
Kansas and Boston were legit the Mozarts of their day. The complexity of their songs is pure genius

Yes, Bob Ross, and his happy little...guitars..🤣

Cheers Amy we will check out more from them.
Dust in the wind was another of their big hits.
Great reaction. You really need to see the video of them doing Dust in the Wind. These 2 are my favorite Kansas songs. The lyrics of both songs are incredible along with the talented musicians and harmonies. Amazing talent!

The tambourine man was a classically trained violinist. Dust in the Wind showcases his talent nicely.
Robby Steinhardt passed away July 2021 :-(
Always loved Kansas! Just voices and Instruments! Nothing electronic or digital…….awe, feeling nostalgic! ❤️
For the younger gen this is known as the Supernatural tv show season finale theme song
@Kevin Przy
We didnt know that, but will check it out.
Cheers
wasn't actually theme song, but was used often in the series.
And if you are a bit older Guitar Hero track
@@williamkriner2968 you're right I'm pretty sure it was played at every season finale but it's widely associated with Supernatural.
Love both. Lol
One of my favorites. Always a thrill to watch a live performance. Great review once again.

WoW Awesome! What a Blast from the Past...in such a GREAT way! Thankyou Guys 😊
@jenell56
You are very welcome
Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes....all the old classics from my youth and all amazing! However, Wayward Son probably has one of the best syncopated rift sections in any rock song ever produced!
@Darice Taylor
Hi Darice and thanks for the comment
Ah, Blue Oyster Cult! Gotta do Don't Fear The Reaper! 👍
Kansas has great music! Dust in the Wind is beautiful.
No auto tune. Every band member a Prog master. Saw them live and unknown Cheap Trick opened. FAB evening.
Their best hit was "Dust in the wind." The video is beautiful and you see Big Red playing the violin. ❤️
Many excellent songs and still making great new music. I live in Kansas, Kerry Livgren guitarist and primary song writer lives a quiet life a few hours away from me.
Robby Steinhardt (the big guy with the huge head of red hair) just passed away in 2021. RIP

I saw some version where bongos were audible. But I think it was a raw live take

Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind are there. two masterpieces, and they're totally different songs.
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know
You interestingly got the impression that they were a collective from other groups. The original band members were all in the same graduating class of Topeka West High School in Topeka, Kansas.
Glad you reviewed this one. This is my all time favorite progressive rock song. Oh I forgot to add how much I love tambourine man!! So chill!!
My high school marching band did a show to this and Chicago songs lol
Supernatural family represent!
RIP Big red, Robbie Steinhardt. Violin and vocals. The lead singer (also keyboards and bongos), is Steve Walsh. Kerry Livgren has always had hair so blond that it looks almost white.
#1 wasn't born when Kansas started.
This song jams the whole time this my favorite song by them
That was a great tune, good musicians, cool!
Kansas for me brought the violin into rock. Not in this particular song but you should check out their other hits.
Like Elaine, I recognised this as the theme from the TV series 'Supernatural'. Not my usual genre, but I grew to like it after hearing it so often. Never heard the entire song before though, so that was new! VERY 70's. Cool.

@MaMaFlush 99
Hello and thanks for the comment and the recommendation.
We will be back with more soon
One of the first USA prog albums (Leftoverture) I bought when the Virgin stores opened in the 1980's and one I still listen to still. This track is unusual as it doesn't feature the late Robby Steinhartd's violin playing, which was a unique feature of the Kansas sound.
I've been listening to this since the 70's
He's just announced a new tour this year... would 💕 to see him perform really really a great artist 💕💕💕💕
It was used in the Southpark Guitar Hero episode. Randy sings it, it’s a classic.
Once he let me listen to the Spice Girls and he laughed his ass off when I told him they were American because they sang in English😂😂 I was 7!
This is still an iconic song in 2023.
I saw Kansas live at least once, maybe twice, in the early 80s - once was a doubleheader with Heart so very worth the price of the ticket!
Back in the mid seventies you couldn't turn on a rock, not "classic" yet, radio station at any time of day and not hear this song.
Great times.
Great reaction, thanks for sharing. Steve Walsh vocals, harmonies, organ, bongos; Robbie Steinhardt, vocals, harmonies, tamborine and violin; Kerry Livgren lead guitar, rhythm guitar, classical guitar, composer, lyricist; Phil Ehart on drums; Rich Williams and Dave Hope. Love your channel, rocking out from Washington state US.
I wish they included the bongos in the mix. I know the bongos were audible in some version i saw on youtube. Think it might have been a live take
Give "Dust in the Wind: by them! KILLER SONG!
Love kansas!! Enjoying your reactions Guys👍 Please do a reaction to "Journey" They will not disappoint! Steve Perry was their lead singer. The greatest voice of any band in my opinion.
Grand funk Railroad.... inside looking out-1969. Fantastic
You hear it a lot on the TV show "Supernatural", it's almost turned into the Winchester's theme song.
Got to see Kansas in Germany in 1977 and the opening act was a little band from my hometown called Cheap Trick.
Gents, happy new year. Elmar from Germany.
The big red-headed guy is a brilliant violinist. If you choose to check out "Dust in the Wind", you will see that.
My sister in law went to High School in Topeka, Kansas with a couple of the guys from the band
"All the way up, all the way up... this one goes to 11!"
Bachman Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet 1974 Video
Pure talent ❤

This song is usually extra long and a crowd favorite to close their shows. Steve Walsh is Keyboards and a great vocalist. Robby plays Violin like NOBODY else. Kerry on Guitar is phenomenal along with Rich and Dave….AWESOME performance every time.
I’m British. Kansas my fav band ever ,,
I definitely popped for the Top Gear/Jeremy Clarkson ref! If they didn't use this on the show at some point, they should have.
@Chuey's Mama
Hello and hope you are all doing well.
We enjoyed this one and nice to see the artists from back in the day.
We will be doing more soon and you have given us some interesting ones to continue the journey.
Cheers for now
Kansas was formed by bringing two bands together, that's why you have 2 lead singers.
The song was released in 1976.
RIP Robby Steinhardt
Very musically talented band. They are actually from the state of Kansas. The big guy with the massive red hair is actually a violist.
Who ever is reading this your hair looks AMAZING!!!!!!
@Sensei Bison
Thank you, I am bald 😉
@@BritPopsReact why can't i see my original reply to your reply
Yes, do "Dust In The Wind" next.
"Hold O"n is a good 1
I don't know who has done reaction to STYX yet but maybe do a reaction to Suite Madame Blue.. they're probably currently touring with Kansas as they did a lot in yesteryear
Check out Song For America, Your Reason To Be, The Wall, Magnum Opus, Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Hold be On, Cheyenne Anthem, Lamplight Symphony, Point Of No Return. All classics of Kansas!♥️✌️
Robbie (red hair, beard) plays the violin. He passed away in 2021.
Kansas isn't east or west coast. It's in the middle of the country. Literally. 😊
@Kari Williams
Cheers Kari 😊

Cheers BPs! 😊
@Steve Murrell
Cheers Steve for the fab info, there was a lot going on there and we were impressed.
All the best
Freddie Mercury, and Brian May, were big fans of Kansas. I saw their live act once ( over forty years ago.
