    You should listen to the Beatles albums from their first to their last, in order. You will really get to see and appreciate how they evolved and changed, and I guarantee you will be amazed at the musical progression. They really are the greatest band of all time, everyone after them were influenced by them.

    Bob Dylan had the same confusion as you... He heard I Get High and was surprised when the Beatles didn't know what to do when he gave them a joint.

      Dylan didn't introduce the Beatles to pot. He introduced them to good pot. They'd smoked it before that, but it wasn't any good so they weren't that interested in smoking more. I'm sure they knew what to do when he passed a joint. They smoked cigarettes. It isn't all that different.

    Helter Skelter is one of the 1st metal songs before metal was a thing, Motley Crue's version on '83's Shout At The Devil isn't even as heavy.

    • @ll7868
      @ll7868 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You should do a series of comparing original songs and their metal remakes, Helter Skelter by The Beatles & Crue, Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting by Elton John & Flotsam & Jetsam are good places to start.

    Its not so much of your viewers wanting to hear the full song. Its the reaction of a young man your age hearing these songs for the first time. If a kid like you finds this "decent" after 50 years that says alot. With all the advanced recording technology it shows a lot of patience on your part to actually sit down and listen to this. You have also sat down and done your homework and realised you need to break the song up to post this video. A job well done my man!!

I'd recommend delving into all the various styles they exceeded on. Revolution, a bluesy hard rocker. Hey Jude, an anthemic classic. Helter Skelter, Rain, Strawberry Fields, and Come Together, just a few classics. Keep up the great work! Thanks!

    About three weeks before my fifteenth birthday I watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I scraped my pennies together and went out to buy “I Want to Hold Your Hand” on a 45rpm single. We had a little three speed Seabreeze turntable and I played that record over and over and over. Then I flipped it and played “I Saw Her Standing There” over and over and over. I couldn’t get enough Beatles. There were other groups and artists that I enjoyed too but the Beatles were far and above my favorites. Unfortunately when they played Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto sometime later I couldn’t afford the astronomical ticket price of $5.00

    "She Loves You" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" hit big within a couple weeks of each other in January 1964. Basically a new Beatles song was coming out on the radio about every week or so. In those days they didn't play albums on the radio, only singles.

    I'm very much enjoying your commentary on the Beatles music. Like yourself, I have always been open to music of all genres. I'm 66 years old, a musician and singer, and I grew up in the 50's & 60's. From 50's "Doo-wop", Beatles, all things Motown, through current artists, this stuff was the soundtrack of my life. I'm a "harmony junkie" and groups like The Beatles, The Drifters, The Temptations, The Eagles, and any band with good harmonies have always been on my playlists. We all need to expand our musical horizons. I actually did a TH-cam video, a few years back of a cover of The Drifters' "Up On The Roof".

    Bob Dylan also thought they were singing “I get high” and he was surprised about their innocence in this regard when he met them.
    This song was not written specifically for the American Market. It was released in England 29 November 1963 and 26 December 1963 in the US after Marsha Gilbert saw a short news clip about them and wrote to her local radio station requesting Beatles music. The station DJ got a copy through a BOAC Airlines employee who picked up IWTHYH and brought it back.... It spread like wildfire prior to its release in America. Capitol was forced to early release it...

    • @nancyhallatr
      @nancyhallatr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Argh.They were far from innocent. They were scruffy bad boys who played in dumps in Liverpool. Drugs were all over the place. The matching suits and haircuts were a gimmick to make them more appealing to teenaged girls. Once they had established themselves, they dropped the facade. They had smoked pot previously, but not good pot. This was according to George Harrison. Dylan introduced them to good pot.

    Read the Wikipedia entry on The Beatles. The story of The Beatles is extremely unusual. The main points of interest regarding their music is how quickly they developed and the sheer *diversity* of material contained in their song catalog. Compare Love Me Do from late 1962 to Tomorrow Never Knows from early 1966. The difference is stunning.

    Paul and John composed this song in Jane Asher's family home at 57 Wimpole Street, in central London. Jane was Paul's girlfriend at that time (1963). Jane's brother is Peter Asher, who was one half of the duo "Peter & Gordon" who scored a #1 hit in the UK and US with "World Without Love", another Lennon & McCartney composition.

    I was a kid, 5-6 years old when "She Loves You"/"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" hit it big. My mother used to have top-40 radio on all the time. Obviously I was not a big 'music expert' at that age, but you could tell this was way different than the "moon in june" songs that were most of the big hits of the day.
    Of course now 55 years later it sounds pretty tame but in 1963 this stuff was like suddenly they plugged in a whole extra set of amps on the radio.

    I love this concept. A modern listener getting into and digging on the music of us older generations music. I hope you'll continue with this onto other 60's artists and not just the Beatles. Everything has a context though and not every song is going to stand the test of time. but a lot do and should be heard and brought to the attention of modern listeners.

    So interesting hearing someone react to the Beatles who's never even heard them before. I was about 10-11 when they first hit America and I can say it was like the aliens just landed. I listen to the early songs now and they sound kind of tame but growing up in the 50's and early 60's there was nothing before them that even came close. Not only their sound with those three part harmonies but the way they looked, with what was considered back then, long hair had a huge impact. It was like a paradigm shift. America was still in mourning from the assassination of president Kennedy then the Beatles came along a few months later and their music radiated this much needed blast of pure joy.

    Bear in mind that back in the day what you heard was what you got. This is them playing the song basically live and recording it without over-dubbing like is done today. They played it and an engineer mixed it. That was how it was in the day.

  • @cessnaskyhawk4254
    @cessnaskyhawk4254 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The confusion of whether he said, "I can't hide," or "I get high" stems from not putting the whole phrase together. "When I touch you I feel happy inside. It's such a feeling I can't hide."
    The rhyme is important, but the context of being about 55 years ago means most people didn't use or understand the term, "Get High." It is good for you to consider these things as I did when I was your age. I listened to some music popular 10 and 20 years before I was born. I can say it broadened my appreciation for other types of music
    Interesting to note the fascination The Beatles had with The Beach Boys new stuff in the mid '60s. It seems BOTH BANDS had an appreciation for their main competition.

    • @nancyhallatr
      @nancyhallatr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it depended on whether or not you got high. The term was, most definitely, in use in the '60s and probably back at least to the '40s.

  • @pageljazz
    @pageljazz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Again, I really like what you're doing here. Like I said earlier, if you listened to the song all the way through off-camera, and then did a video of your thoughts and reactions, that would not only result in (I would think) a better video, but you'd also still be kept clear of any copyright infringements.
    Interesting side note: I'm a Generation X-er, and I wasn't born until 1971, so I wasn't around to experience this song's initial impact. But I work with a lot of older musicians, and I've had many of them tell me that they got "gooseflesh" when they first heard this song, without even knowing who the were listening to! At least a couple people I know tell me that it was this song, upon first hearing it, that first inspired them to become musicians. Seriously, ask any Baby Boomer and they'll tell you they remember exactly where they were the first time they heard "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
    So to our younger ears, it's hard to appreciate how moved people were at the time. But this song's power and cultural impact cannot be overstated!
    Keep doing what you're doing. I'm glad you're helping to generate interest in older music to a younger audience.

    I fear you've missed the point of these lyrics.
    "I want to hold your hand" is a metaphor for "I want to have sex with you".
    This song was written at a time when references to explicit sex were absolutely forbidden. The entire song is about sex. The rest of the lyric makes much more sense once this frame is established.
    By the way, this is an old tradition in the blues. I assure you that "Butter and Egg man" (th-cam.com/video/5A68yRakpZQ/w-d-xo.html, vocals begin at 2:00) has nothing to do with butter or eggs, and "Jelly Roll" (th-cam.com/video/xhtG5YrQ-lY/w-d-xo.html) is not about food.

    This early stuff is magical , not shit. These guys were 19 and 20 years old writing classics that would go on to be re-recorded hundreds of times in the future. This is the first band to keep evolving and their fans never knew what to expect next, so record sales were out of this world. The Beatles worked 8 days a week for at least 4 years and invented stadium concerts. They tried to rock 50,000 people at Shea stadium with a few 100 watt amps. Big amps weren't invented yet. Sound equipment suddenly had to try to keep up with these guys ! You have to watch " The Beatles touring years" a Ron Howard film, to really understand their magic.

    The point of this song was 'impact'. It was constructed specifically to break them in America. It might have anyway, but, in the wake of the Kennedy assassination, the nation wanted something to hearten them. (To quote from ' Revolution in the head' - a great book) "Their TV performance on the Ed Sullivan show on 9th February (1963), claimed by many to be the pivotal event in American post-war culture, sealed the deal and, by April, their back catalogue was flooding the US charts".

    actually, The Beatles early success can be traced to the US.
    My Bonnie scored Top 40 in both the US and UK, a little higher in the US.
    In '62, the Beatles had their 1st US Top 10 with Love Me Do, which was also their 1st US charttopper.
    After 2 releases that flopped in '63, the group scored their 3rd Top 40 and 2nd charttopper with She Loves You.
    Their followup singl-I Wanna Hold Your Hand-also Topped the US charts but was actually their 3rd US #1

    Bod Dylan also thought that they sang "I get high" and that they where singing about smoking weed. When he found out the truth and that they never had tried to smoke weed, he offered them some.

    If you want to explore the "British Invasion" period, check out the Kinks or the Rolling Stones during the same period. You have to understand, the music coming from England then was so different than what we had here at the time, we were blown away. Bands like the Stones and the Animals had discovered american black music that most Americans had never heard, added their own twist and sent it back to us. The Beatles were into it too, but they were aiming for something else. Not better or worse, (I still remember hearing this song and being amazed).

      I thought the early Stones were better than the early Beatles, but I preferred the Kinks and some of the other bands. The Animals were my favorite. I also listened to R&B and Soul, which inspired some of these British bands. In the beginning they all wanted to be Otis Redding or the Shirelles.

    Don't feel bad - - Bob Dylan thought they were saying "I get high" too. When he first met The Beatles, he offered them a joint to smoke. But they had never done one before. He said, "What about your song - - 'I get high, I get high?" They said, "It's 'I can't hide."
    Needless to say, he turned them on that day (like they sing in "A Day In A life" - - "I'd love to turn you on") & their songwriting then after became more personal & introspective, not the teeny-bopper girl/boy romance stuff for high schoolers.

      This just isn't true. There were drugs all over Liverpool. The pot that was available to these kids playing in dive clubs in Liverpool wasn't very good, so they used other substances to get high. According to George Harrison, they had smoked pot before meeting Dylan, but they didn't like it. Dylan showed them what good pot could do.

      They were massive in England and Ed Sullivan saw them when he was coming back from England on a plane and he said "Who the hell is that?"
      They appeared on his show a couple of months later and the rest is history as they say.

    It's definitely "...I can't hide." In those days when things (at least publically) were so innocent, there were some who thought it was a sneaky sexual reference "It's such a feeling that my love I can't hide."
    I was just hitting my teens when their first album came out, and I agree that they were boy-bandish. Even Paul McCartney has joked about that. On the other hand they wrote and played all their own stuff, and these early tracks did have a certain charm of their own. As someone pointed out a long time ago, the Beatles' worst songs, the ones they gave away to other performers, are still better than a lot of other bands' best.

    I'm not sure if the term "get high" was even understood in England back then, but they did take lots of speed in those days. If the Beatles especially John knew the term he might have been masking it, which would be remarkable. Masking is where you say something but something else hidden can be heard. At any rate it's still noteable becuase Bob Dylan thought it was saying "I get high" and he thought the Beatles smoked Marijuana which was common in at least NYC musicians especially folk musicians by '65 when they met. The song 'You've Got to Hide Your Love Away' was the earliest pot smoking hippie style song that the Beatles did, and it was in the style of Bob Dylan, and that was '65. By the time they did Help! they were smoking up a storm and were high in some of the scenes of the movie. They didn't get LSD until '66 though.

    You need to understand the context of the times... In late November 1963 the country and the world at large was stunned when President Kennedy was assassinated. Happy music didnt happen for a month.. I was very young, but I remember. I was in the first grade at at catholic grade school. The death of the president hit us all hard and it took some time to recover. By February of 1964, the youth wanted to break out of the fog. Our family was visiting my dads sister who only lived a few blocks away and they had teenage daughters who happened to have the Ed Sullivan show on the tv... When the Beatles came on, the room erupted with squeals you cannot imagine..
    I knew I had to be a musician at that point.. The Beatles took over America at that point. As my sainted mother said later on... The Monkees ruined our family and the Beatles ruined the world....

    Their early stuff was strictly dance music, about 3 years in they started experimenting with different sounds and studio recording techniques that were very revolutionary, with the help of their producer Sir George Martin, considered the 5th Beatle. Their lyrics became more serious too.

    Check this song out by the short lived Mynah Birds. OK song, but the band birthed legends. This song is from 1966 sessions for their first album for Motown. Then the lead singer got busted for being AWOL from the Navy and Motown dropped them.
    Legends: the previous drummer and bass player quit. They later formed a band called Steppenwolf and had a monster hit with "Born to Be Wild."
    The replacement bass player, Bruce Palmer, and brand new lead guitarist Neil Young Sold the band equipment and drove from Toronto, CA to Hollywood and quickly formed a band with Richie Furray and Steven Stills called Buffalo Springfield (review "For What It's Worth" for starters). 3 albums in 2 years and they broke up sparing Crosby, Stills, & Nash (and occasionally Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, a courtly rock band Poco and Neil Young's legendary solo career of folk, country and hard rock. He just released anotger album last year. Lastly, the singer Ricky Matthews got out of the Navy jail, would drop his last name and finally hit it big with "Superfreak" as Rick James.
    This is one of the only released songs from the shelved Motown album. It's just insane that these people were all in one unknown band and signed to Motown of all labels, especially considering where they ended up.
