    My best tip would be to lace them up tight so that your foot doesn't slide around in the boot which causes the blisters. This also helps to stretch the leather and break them in. Do some squats and lunges in them too and walk up and down stairs.

    Believe me it's no lie, they are extraordinary comfortable. I have 15 year old pairs of Docs and its like heaven. None of the Internet tips do really help in breaking them in. You can use the dr Martens Wonderbalsam or some shoe oil for the heel and rub it in with your finger. By the way i would not recomment to massage the tip of the boot (the toebox) cause it might loose its shape. The back of the shoe is the biggest problem in the first weeks. Massage the Boot there. If these are the new made in Thailand Dr. Martens they do have an insole which you can remove. (so the boot is one size bigger) I know the cardboard under the yellow/brownish insole looks hard and uncomfortable but with time it molds to your foot. Thats the thing with Doc Martens, the insole molds to your foot and thats why they are so comfortable with time. Also the insole as it shapes after your foot, sinks in a little bit, so the boot gets a little wider. i wish you luck with the breaking in. don't give up

    • @olivialaclaire
      @olivialaclaire  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the tips! I actually haven’t found it to be as excruciatingly painful to break in as everyone on the internet seems to think. I’ve not had to wear 2 pairs of socks and I haven’t got any blisters. I am still waiting for them to mold to my feet but it really hasn’t been a terrible experience so far

    • @Marcus_Berger1701
      @Marcus_Berger1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LayMeInTheRiver For me no doubt the Made in England. Altough the made in england take a little while till the insole forms to your foot. They have a cardboard insole which isn't as comfortable from the beginning. Also the shape of the made in englands is better cause its not as wide as the Thai Martens. It hugs your foot better.

    • @aldisnutz
      @aldisnutz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you had your docs for 15 years then you probably have the ones that were made in england, cuz those are better than the newer ones that arent made in england

    • @Marcus_Berger1701
      @Marcus_Berger1701 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aldisnutz you are absolutely right. many of mine are from before 2003. they are of better quality and they used a slighty different more comfortable shoelast. But there are some pairs after 2003 which do have a very good quality, like the Horween leather martens and even the new made in england are okay. some of the Pascal Martens are also pretty good. alltough i have to admit the leather of the new made in englands is breaking pretty quick. The big problem are the Standard smooth Dr. Martens. They are not as good as the standard boots from years ago.

    I’d recommend buying the made in England docs or even Solovairs (this company originally produced Dr. Martens boots before they moved their production mainly to Asia and is still producing 100% in England). They are a little more expensive than the ones, that are made in China or Thailand but they are very high quality and will probably last you even longer. And of course the people working in England are getting an appropriate amount of money for their job.

    Breaking in docs has never been a problem for me! I own two pairs, I made sure to get the rough full grain leather as opposed to the smooth for both, and leather conditioned and waterproofed them as soon as I bought them. I always wear thick socks anyways, but they've never given me problems!

    I got my 1460s in black for almost one year and I must say they are so great. I never had problems breaking them in, because I wear workboots for years. One thing that helped very much was the wonder balsam. I applied it every 2 weeks and it softens the leather pretty good. My second pair of Docs are the 1460 Slip resistant in Cherry Red. The leather isn't that smooth and the sole is much thicker, I'd say this boot is great for the colder season. Before you buy a new pair, keep in mind that you should buy a size smaller as you normally do, Docs are way bigger than other shoes. But overall I love my docs

    for anyone who needs it, i’d recommend sticking these special little pads inside the shoe so it feels a bit softer on your heels. line those with sports tape so they don’t stick to your socks (that happened to me loads of times and it’s the most annoying thing EVER)! and lastly, instead of tying the laces quite loose, please tie them as tight as possible! your feet won’t be able to move around, which helps the leather get used to the shape of your foot AND you won’t get as many blisters!

    If you’re worried about them being too tight I’d get the jadons as they run a bit looser than the 1460’s 1490’s. Also skip two pairs of sock and buy one pair of Alaska knit socks from target (the thicker style). They are my go to socks for breaking in dr martens. You kinda have to wear them around then when they start to hurt take them off and repeat this process until the leather loosens up. It works... I have about a dozen pairs 😂

      Hey, I'm about to buy the Dr. Martens Jadon plateau boot online, they're going to be my first pair of Doc's. My problem is the sizing! I tried hard to find this pair in a shop but there aren't any near my city. I usually wear size 39, but I'm not quite sure about the sizing with these Doc's. There are sooo many people in the rating complaining about the sizing! Many say the Jadon is too small, many say it is too big and many say it fits perfect in their usual size... Is there ANY chance of walking them in COMPLETELY in a time of 20 days, if I get them in size 39??? Because, I can only send them back in a time of 30 days and I need to be COMPLETELY sure about the fitting! I'm really scared that they won't fit at first in size 39, but maybe after walking them in completely... plus I'm scared of than sending the one's in 39 back and buying size 40 if I start believing 39 is too small, but than ending up with too big shoes after 30 days and not being able to send them back! They REALLY aren't allowed to be too small, because I have BIG issues with grown-in toe nails because of too small shoes! Maybe I'm overreacting in your eyes, but I just want to do the right thing, this is a lot of money for me... Please help :(

    • @holly1687
      @holly1687 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      koko imo the jadons fit a little looser on my fit and I have them in my normal size for dr martens. I do believe they’d be too tight if I went for a size down and I did by an insole which makes them fit snugger. I’d go with your normal size in DM’s.

    I did the same thing - dude told me to go with a 6 bc I normally wear a 6 or 6 1/2. I DIDN'T know that these Dr. Martens were some kind of German torture device! So I wore them TO WORK last night - as soon as I got them. Journey Dude did mention that I would have to "break them in" so I thought my feet would probably hurt before the night was over. I didn't know that less than 2 hours in my toes would be completely numb, the top of my left foot would be bruised, and my right foot would have a blister on the ankle. Fortunately, I had another pair of shoes to change into in the car and I ended up leaving a customer standing at the register while I literally just said, " 'scuse me one minute, please" and made a beeline for the door and went out to my car to change. Still, I am committed to breaking these bad boys in. I have been wanting a pair for literal YEARS. But no, I never knew they were German torture devices. I still love them. Enough to pay $160 for them. I have NEVER paid that much for a pair of shoes, a purse, or anything before. Idk what made me finally walk into Journeys and get them (especially at one of the worse financial times I've had in a long time). So I got up this morning and I thought maybe I should try again today (gotta go to work this morning) but this time wear 2 pairs of socks. But I tried mine on with only ONE pair while I was watching your video (nice to know someone else had the same idea) and man it's tight with just one pair so idk about 2. My feet are narrow as well, but right now I have a lot of extra weight on that I picked up during quarantine so they might be too fat for a size 6 in these. Anyways, I am so interested and can't wait to see your next video on how these monsters are after 4 months. So.... see ya in the next video. Let's fast-forward in time.....

    Among the world of boots, Doc Martens are among the friendliest to sneaker users. This is a good thing because higher end boots like Red Wing heritage boots will definitely be harder to break in considering how thick those leather uppers are. One major con against Doc Martens of course is that they essentially have a moc Goodyear welt that most cobblers cant sew kn a new outsole to. So if you like the look of Doc Martens but want something that is reasoleable with a similar aesthetics, try Allen Edmonds Higgins Mills, Redwing Balcksmith, Becket Siminon service boots, or Thursday boots. All of the above have superior leather uppers and feature the goodyear welt that will ensure you will be able to keep your boots for many years to come. Also, Doc Martens have no shank for arch support, meaning that you're more likely to experience foot fatigue if you need arch support.
    Either way, glad tinder more people walk into the world of boots. They're worth the pain in the long run because the leather will eventually mold to your foot, even more so if you have boots with a leather footbed and a cork bed filling underneath!

    Use mink oil to oil them especially in those places that are really stiff. It can change the colour of the leather and if you use it inside, your socks can get oily but dirty socks are better than bleeding feet. I did this with my riding shoes when they were new and it worked well for softening the heel.

    Buy shoe stretch, spray it all over them and wear them. They will stretch and become soft in no time. Get some dubbin wax to protect, waterproof and soften. FYI, I only wear black docs so I don't know if it would work without staining other colors. It's worth researching.

    Doubling up on socks is helpful, massage the boots(especially in the tongue and heal area), wear them for only an hour or two at a time if you have a choice, keep the laces tight(but not too tight), this can help the boot form to your foot better. Long walks aren’t great because the heal is the worst to try and break in and it will leave blisters, especially when the boot is still stiff and new. They are better when they are exactly your size or maybe a little smaller, because the leather will stretch over time and form to your foot(especially when you wear two pairs of socks) so don’t worry if they’re a little tight when you first put them on, you probably didn’t waste your money like you think you did. Hope any of this helps with your break- in process :)

    I have about fifteen pairs of Docs.
    My advice is:
    Do not break anything. Do not skip carnations or anything else.
    Simply tighten the laces and even tighten the laces very well. And also wear big socks.
    Now my opinion is perhaps distorted because in addition, I do a lot of walking. I wear army wool socks: in winter they keep me warm. And summer, I'm not hotter. I may be lucky, but I do not sweat at all. Even after 2 hours of walking. In the meantime they are thick and very comfortable. Many people believe the opposite. Again, maybe I'm lucky.
    And so I wear them as tight as possible (and of course without skipping eyelets) for two reasons: The foot does not slip inside, it is well maintained. It is this absence of friction that prevents me from having blisters after several hours of walking. And if I walk in the water (because after all the Docs is also waterproof shoes), the water has great difficulty to seep beyond the waterproof membrane. Because many people forget in this case that wearing waterproof shoes is not enough to leave or leave little water seep. The right equipment is not enough. You must also know how to wear it.
    This morning, I went to work under a deluge. I wore my Docs and skinny jeans inside. I went through a flood with water over the ankles for a few meters. The water did not have time to infiltrate. I kept my feet perfectly dry.
    Carrying Docs does not have to buy a brand. It's also a state of mind. It is also to be well protected.

    I just had to exchange a size 7 for a 6 because they just looked gigantic and I kinda felt ridiculous. Like the proportions were alllll wrong. But these definitely are going to suck to break in, but hopefully the end result is worth it ahhh.

    I coated the outside of mine in almond oil every night and wore them during the day (after cleaning them with just a towel to remove it). It took me only a week to fully break into them. Of course, I was doubling up on socks and massaging and squeezing them, but I can guarantee they didn't give me a single blister. I was prepared to suffer like many others before me did, but the almond oil saved me for sure.
    Just don't coat the inside because the leather there is a little bit too porous and you don't want to ruin it. On the outside, it will be totally ok.

    If you want to break in a pair of Docs people always make the boot loose but in fact you need to do the opposite and make it tight as possible so your foot inside does not move at all. When your foot is loose inside the boot it causes friction then you start getting blisters.

    The creaking is the thick, dry, stiff, new leather. Oil, use oil. There's a YT channel called Rose Anvil, and the guy has a method for oiling and softening dr martens. It's pretty much how I used to soften new leather stirrups, and reins when I rode horses. It works. A good penetrating oil and heat really softens leather.

    There's a good way to soften the leather. Pour a good amount of baby oil or mink oil inside (and outside if you want) of the leather before wearing. Also I wear mine a little bit tight because if they're loose, chances are it's going to rub against your skin as you walk around and that will cause blisters. Also, if you can find some foot powder, use it to help your feet relax and be able to withstand discomfort while breaking your boots.

    As someone who wears docs for more than 7 years now I've been through more than 10 pairs of docs.
    1. Dont wear them loose as she did! This is important. If you make them as thight as possible than they will shape to your foot. Only reason for blisters to form is because the boot is loose around the foot and its moving while you walk causing your skin to move too.
    2. Always qo to the store to try them out and try few sizes, dont just stick to your usual size. Give them a little walk try on in a store to make sure they fit right.
    3. Buy leather protection and maintain them. If you take care of them they will last for years.

  • @thastump
    @thastump 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Docs are basically broken in from the factory, they're more like sneakers masquerading as boots. Consequently, they also wear out much faster than more stout boots, and they're basically impossible to resole. They also have no shank, which makes them soft, but also likely to collapse in front of the heel.
    Compare to a good set of hiking boots from Meindl, Lowa, Hanwag, Haix or similar makes, which are made for all-day walking, and you'll see a massive difference. Or compare to old-fashioned military boots like the Norwegian M77, which do take som serious breaking in, but can also last for several decades of regular use.
    If you want the sneaker-like feel, Solovair makes a much superior boot (like an old-fashioned Doc Martin).

  • @alwaysreadin163
    @alwaysreadin163 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Edit: for those with narrow feet look at Clark's sale section on their site where they have the Orianna Hi boots. I just got my merlot pair and they're pretty comfortable, I think they might be a little easier than docs to break in.
    I'm usually a size 8 on the dot for most shoes, and my first pair that I got as a present a few years ago was the Newtons 1460s and it fit perfectly. Note: I have super narrow feet too so I know the struggle! I recently bought a patent 1460 pair and the tongue seam was so tight! I was also worried that I didn't get the right size but I put in 5 pairs of varying sock thicknesses folded up in each shoe (pairs are 1 thicker boot sock, 1 thinner boot sock, 2 no show towards the toe, and 1 thick fluffy pair of socks towards the top of the shoe) and I tried them on this morning and it made A WORLD of difference! The seam is much more malleable so I'm very glad I didn't return them! I'd usually say something might be the wrong size when you feel your toe is pushing up against the front end of the boot or you feel a lot of pressure there. You could also try using a shoe tree to stretch it out perhaps even quicker than the sock method. I've also found that a lot of people say you can use castor oil on your boots which I have been using and it's also been softening my patent ones when I pour like a dime size (probably less) on a paper towel and rub it evenly all over the shoe and then wipe off the excess.

    Hey there, I guess it would depend on the type of leather you’ve got on your docs.
    If it’s the leather got a plastic feel to it then it would most likely be difficult to break in.
    If the leather is proper leather then some mink oil will do the job. Also try and apply it on the inside of the leather but don’t get it on your insoles. Then use a hair dryer to warm the leather up to help the leather absorb the mink oil. It should take less than 10 minutes and will make the leather so soft that you even forget you’re wearing a new pair of docs.
    Hope that helps
