I lived down the street and one of my aunts was working there at the time the fire started. Both of my grandmothers and two aunts had been employed there at different times.
water, even a straight bore.. if you could get close enough would evaporate before hitting the fire even with todays technology. In these situations defensive mode you keep exposures wet and let it burn. No sense on risking life for a total loss.
In 1987 that's was probably what's called a HEAVY timber structure. And I reading comments about it having oil based products on the floor. So from my knowledge of fire as a career firefighter and a volunteer. The Radiate heat would be 1,000+degrees. I would be very very concerned about the rest of the city. Especially any structure with in 50 to 100 yards around this massive fire. These firefighter are doing a great job! For equipment training and water.

I was 9 at the time but I remember the videos on the news. Second massive blaze in the area in 4 months.
That's unstoppable.
Man that mill was roasting. I was 6 years at the time.
Hell of a fire
I went by on 195 with chief Eddie from Swansea and I could feel a heat through the close car window
I see firefighters are just hanging around then as they do now. A chief drinking a coffee. Great FD LMAO
If you can do a better job, then sign up!
Windy nothing you can do
