Danke schön, René, for this review. As a Linux & AMD user myself, I was pleasantly surprised to find someone reviewing the A485 in a way so specifically useful and pertinent to me.

Just FYI, I bought one for my wife (2700U model) and your videos are a big reason for helping me feel comfortable that. I installed Fedora 29 and so far so good. :-)

Now it just needs 120hz+ display and ECC RAM. Hopefully they keep Vega GPUs in the next model.

I had a similar issue (aluminium case and weird sensation when touching when connected to mains power) back in the day with an ultrabook. The solution for me was to make sure that all 3 connections (phase 1, phase 2 + earth) are connected to the power supply, maybe get another power supply or something. Some cheap travel power adapters might also not forward the earth connection properly.

great video, i also have the issue with mild electric shock from metal laptop bodies. its bad with my surface book, but i have had alot of issues with that . the a485 gets a lot of negative reviews, mostly about linux support and the battery life. which is a shame as i like the idea of an AMD thinkpad... im still thinking about buying one..

The AMD ThinkPad worked great for me (except maybe an headset microphone w/ ALSA), only cooling (thus performance) and battery life could have been better. I hope Lenovo updates the AMD models this year. Maybe write them an email that you would be interested in a better cooled, higher performance models. Maybe it helps if they get enough feedback ;-)

In Lenovo's German online store there are "a little bit" available: www.lenovo.com/de/de/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-a-series/ThinkPad-A485/p/22TP2TAA485 - but as I mentioned this is a review sample Lenovo send me for three weeks to test. I also wonder what is up with availability, if AMD's foundries can not produce more chips, or if Intel is paying partners to delay and cancel products, ... I honestly have no idea, and if someone knows inside stories please let us know! ;-)

  • @Aaronage1

Looks like a solid offering from Lenovo, great to see Ryzen in a quality machine. It's a shame that Ryzen is relegated to a sub model and not offered alongside Intel in all models, though.
Good choice of headphones btw, they're a bargain considering the quality (have some myself :) )

      Isn't the A series just a rebadged T anyways?

    • @Aaronage1
      @Aaronage1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Probably. The issue with segmenting the product this way it that it positions the AMD platform as a lesser alternative. The main product lines (T series etc.) are the ones that get heavy marketing, get pushed by sales representatives, get built in huge numbers etc.

Würde mich interessieren, welche Kernel-Konfiguration Sie benutzen (einfach Stock-Arch? Oder angepasst?). Modeset läuft bei mir richtig schlecht, amdgpu dafür sehr viel besser. IOMMU habe ich auf passtrough ("pt") gestellt, erzeugt noch die journalctl-Meldung "AMD Vi: Unable to write to IOMMU perf counter" bzw. "can' derive routing for PCI INT A ... • @Madgemade

The AMD ROCm stack provides support for OpenCL and AMDs easy to use parallel compute API HC (based off C++ AMP). But their hardware page rocm.github.io/hardware.html states that the Raven Ridge APU (I believe what this laptop uses) is not properly supported. If it was supported it would be possible to run CUDA code by hipifying it (see ROCm github) this uses HCC. But with the current support I think only OpenCL is working just not the fancy HCC and HIP stuff.

Dieses "deutsche" Englisch ist echt schrecklich.
"Se sinkpäd". "ei test se sipiju performanz"
    "so sen ei wud say"
