I'm excited to see devices like the LG Gram adopting Ryzen variants or thicker laptops with Kaby-Lake G + Vega like the Hades Canyon NUC ... Oh wait no, Coffee-Lake G with 6 core versions yeeees :)
yeah, the PC vendors shell out slimmer, less powerful devices, with questionable battery life, and then wonder that the PC sales do not go up again ;-), ..!
No you don't have to replace the module. I found the solution on unix.stackexchange.com/questions/379049/realtek-wifi-driver-problem-in-linux-mint-18-2 (The second answer)
This was a review load that we had to send back - I probably mentioned my text editing / browsing time in the view, IIRC it was not the most amazing 5h or so? now that there are more models I would probably rather recommend the AMD-based Lenovo E485.
I own one of these, onto which I run happily Ubuntu Studio 17.10. I have managed to make WiFi work through the 8821CE module. What I do not seem to get working is the external Display: I own a USB-C Display dongle (to HDMI) which works flawlessly under Windows, gets recognized by USB under linux, but there is no way to make it work. In another video you had the notebook attached to an external monitor. Which dongle did you use? Was it HDMI? Which brand? Thanks in advance
I used a USB c to DisplayPort cable I brought for the Dell XPS13 the other year: th-cam.com/video/K645WWl0Ff4/w-d-xo.html Rophie DisplayPort cable: services.exactcode.de/amzn.cgi?index=electronics&keywords=Rophie%20usb%20c%20displayport I may also had tested the active HDMI one as wel:; Club 3D HDMI dongle: services.exactcode.de/amzn.cgi?ie=UTF8&index=electronics&keywords=club%203d%20usb%20hdmi I did not had to do anything, it just work on Linux as soon as the amdgpu kernel driver was loaded.
That depends, what I use here is "ALT" mode meaning the graphic cards sends the signal just like over DisplayPort (or DVI, HDMI, ...) and that is the same speed without any performance impact. However, there are also full USB "graphic cards", that are sending all the image data over USB which are quite slow and not 3d accelerated and such. So those, often from the company DisplayLink, are quite slow then.
When I had the early review unit it was indeed not the longest, maybe 5-6 hours with light text editing load (would need to review my own videos for details ;-)? As soon as you run more, like a Webbrowser with all the modern animated, video and react stuff all slim and light battery life will degrade quickly...
Hi.
unfortunately not, as Thunderbolt is currently mostly an #Intel-only feature. Lenovo would have to add at least one additional Intel Thunderbolt controller IC for that, … :-/ But then, I think >95% of the users will never gonna use Thunderbolt, ..!
05/2019 - there are new, more powerful models coming soon: th-cam.com/video/KIWAHOob7g0/w-d-xo.html
Great review thanks. Looking forward to thinkpad with Ryzen.
if you have not ordered one, there are new and even more amazing models coming: th-cam.com/video/KIWAHOob7g0/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the review! I have one question though. Can the Wi-Fi drivers work on Linux or do you really have to replace the wireless module?
No you don't have to replace the module. I found the solution on unix.stackexchange.com/questions/379049/realtek-wifi-driver-problem-in-linux-mint-18-2 (The second answer)
Florian P Okay thanks. On Arch that would just be $ yaourt -S rtlwifi_new-dkms. I might buy this laptop soon if I can't find a good alternative.
Daan Vanoverloop Currently i have some problems with the fingerprint sensor and the touchpad being not recognized. I use a Debian based system
whats the battery life on this thing
-for video consumption (how much)
-for browsing (how much)

Does using USB C to output graphics slow down graphical performance or is it 1:1 compared to DisplayPort etc.?

Yes, that's what I wanted to know if the main GPU sends the signal. Thanks!
Hi, nice video! How is the battery life? I heard it only last 3-4 hours. That would be a deal breaker for me.

What company would put single channel 8GB ram soldered in a laptop, like come on
It's easy to add an extra 8Gb dim, I did and 3D performance increased around 10%

Dude you need to work on your english pronunciation and speaking style, it sounds very muffled, maybe add english subtitles.
