Interestingly my race times are always faster than my pool swimming times. This is from sprints right up to IM. I have moved into the 65+ AG and my race times has not changed much in 10 years but my pool times have decreased in speed. My last 70.3 swim three weeks ago is still in the top 35% percentile of all athletes including the Pros.
I swam 1:04 (~1:40/100m, course spot on/not aided) for my 1st 140.6 a couple years ago & there's no way I could've done 20x100m @ 1:30 avg. on 1:40. I don't think I'm the best pool swimmer & would say I have good endurance but adding 15% seems like a lot, given the short rest. I know 2k isn't 3.8k but still. Maybe more accurate in a 25y pool (I swim 50m) or with a wetsuit on? Like you said I could benefit in open water from body position + my pool turning isn't great.
My times are different depending on the open water situation. For this reason I don’t really pay much attention to the predicted time. However, I do compare pool times in practice just to get an idea of I’m improving or not.
I agree my pool times don’t convert at all to open water times. So much varies on open water conditions. I can swim like an Olympian in a river with fast flow, or it’s a massive slog when I’m out in rough seas. Great video though.
Would give anythin to he 10sec per 100m faster. Currently average about 1:57per 100. Thats in a 20m pool and im horrible at the turns.last race i did was a 300m swim in a 50m pool and got 6:03 swim time offical timing but the timing mat was at the pool exit. Garmin said mybswim was 5:48
How does this relate to length of the lane (25m versus 50m) and whether or not you wear a wetsuit (in the pool and in open water)? Not fixing these, seems to make the test pretty vague, doen't it?
Have you tried any other method of finding out your IRONMAN distance swim time?

Great video, as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Those variables don’t matter too much. Some ppl are faster in open water with a suit, some are slower.
If swimming SCY does the 15% conversion still work?
