Mr. Farouk is actually quite nice. He just has to put on an air of strictness. He actually has a soft spot for Charlie because he's reminded of his days as a closeted teen in school.
Episode 5 together with the finale is perhaps my favorite of this second season. That conversation after Charlie passes out in the museum is so important and it marks a turning point in their relationship, it makes it more mature and deeper (even in the comics)! there is a parallel with episode 5 of the first season, that of Charlie's birthday, in which they have a very important conversation for their relationship. Furthermore, Charlie is putting enormous pressure on himself for Nick's coming out, he would like to protect him at all costs, he would like everything to be perfect (remember the ending of the first episode) but perfection doesn't exist... and Nick too begins to understand more of Charlie's problem with food and begins to delicately address the subject but let's remember that he is only 16 and some things are not easy to deal with even when you are an adult. Beautiful moments also the kiss between Elle and Tau and the confrontation between Harry and Isaac.
Bradly (I think that's who plays James) went from student 3 to James and it's really cool to see him go from a side character to a main character in Isaac's self discovery
Right, seeing as you both were discussing the scene with Charlie & Nick about Charlies eating disorder, I wanted to write my experience with it. As someone who has struggled with an ed for a large portion of my life I've found most people are extremely self aware, as was I, you understand what your doing, why you're doing it and what it is doing to you in an almost obsessive way, that is why it's so serious because you can fully know what's happening and be so self aware but still view the problem as a safe space for you, it is ultimately about control a lot of the time, it's something you can focus all your attention on so you can distract yourself from what's going on either internally or externally. Charlie has been suffering with this since the bullying, a time when his reality was grim and completely out of control so he took to trying to control anything he could. Personally I think that was a great way for Nick to react , as one of you said pushing the idea of "you need to stop right now" almost never works and in my experience makes things worse, it can cause people to get frustrated and lash out but the way Nick responded with something like 'I want to understand, I don't, but I want to' builds that trust so Charlie can feel comfortable opening up to him when he starts feeling bad. I think it also boils down to that these two have such good communication.
I think Charlie is aware of what and why he’s doing it but he might not recognise the triggers and how to stop his ED from getting worse. He probably thinks it’s just a part of him now 😢 Also “prison convict David” made me laugh!
The ‘Charlie’s been bending over backwards’ got me 😂 I love your reactions. I’ve watched your season 1 reactions several times!! Little fact for you, the security guard that tells them off is actually a cameo by the director! ❤
Hey guys, I’m totally in love with your reactions. The painting Elle looks at is “The Supper of Emmaus” by Caravaggio and actually it isn’t at The Louvre, but at The National Gallery. And the room where Charlie faints is at Dulwich Picture Gallery. I guess it was easier than filming everything at the Louvre.
Between the cost of filming at the Louvre and only having a week to film everything in Paris, it was probably easier to film the gallery parts back home. Though idk why they specifically chose Supper of Emmaus 🤔
as someone who has read the comics before the show came out i've been waiting so long for the louvre kiss!! everytime reactors want them to kiss before hand I always restrain myself from spoiling it
When I was really deep in my ed, I knew everything about it. It helped me feel better to understand it, and it was all I thought about so I went looking for any content that had a character with an ed. Hearstopper so far has been both the least triggering and one of the more accurate ones
Fun little trivia: the security guard is the director of the show! I love that him and the creator of this entire universe, Alice, get to have little cameos. They’re all so close as a cast and crew and it’s so awesome!
It's crazy when you work backwards to look for all the ED signs. You see the obvious ones, but then there's more subtle ones like in episode 1 when he tells his parents he's dating Nick. If you watch carefully, he pretends to get cereal. 😢
I think that's what they did so well with it. Eating disorders can be VERY easy to hide. We only see it through Nick's view, and even though there are soooo many signs of it, most people don't see it, just like Nick doesn't until it's more obvious.
The problem with this stuff in TV shows is that actors usually don't really eat in scenes where their characters eat. It really bugged me in Big Bang Theory where they would always just move stuff around their plate instead of eating. So picking up on this is much harder since most people just ignore this because they are used to people on screen not actually eating.
@@Xizile93 that’s true. But Charlie also says multiple things that help hint at it as well. Or purposefully closes his lunch without touching it as well
I am always so happy to see a new video from you! Absolutely live for the banter, but I also love how seriously you take the themes. Just really really love your reactions! ❤
I think at this point in the story, Charlie is aware of what he's doing (restricting food) and why he's doing it (gives him a sense of control), but I don't think he or Nick understands that it's an eating disorder yet. Canonically, Charlie is an ISTP. He spends a lot of time in his head and tends to be detached from his feelings. It's a lot easier for him to recognize the logical cause & effect of his actions ("when I don't eat, I feel a sense of control") than it is to acknowledge the underlying emotions ("I need control because I feel anxious being around Ben. The underlying emotions of that anxiety are actually fear, sadness, and shame")
The way Mr. Ajayi knows about Nick and Charlie, so he probably just wanted to split them up. Maybe Mr. Farouk thinks they're friends who don't stop talking, or he's putting them in isolation again?
At 5:22 - as soon as I heard Mr Ajayi say "we will be putting you in pairs" I knew 100% certain Nick and Ben would be placed together. I just knew it, and then when they were put together, I just laughed.
I love that Tao and Elle where making out and Charlie was just unconscious in the next room. They got rid of the scene tho when Tao asks if Charlies ok but it makes sense bc in the comics Tao didnt know about nick and Charlie till the Eiffel tower and they had a fight and thats how they made up so like it makes sense but it would have been funny to see it. Also every single person ive seen reacting to these is always like "how tf did harry see it from over there" makes my day every time i hear it 😭
Re: Charlie and Ben ~ Charlie shoves Ben into a wall at Harry's birthday party, and tells Nick about it when they see each other again, pre kiss. "I'm so proud of you!" says Nick and takes Charlie's hand. "Shut up! says Charlie and notices that Nick not only has taken his hand but seems to be KEEPING it. And that hand is used to pull Charlie up off the settee to go and find "someplace quieter". And then Charlie tells Ben off on Sports Day, which is a couple of months later. The assault was the first of February. The kiss is the 20th of March. Sports Day is in very late May or very early June [I don't know how British schools run[. I think Paris must be July. It is literally six months since Nick and Charlie met on the 4th of January, the first day of term. Best. Six. Months. Ever!
The painting Elle was enamored with was Caravaggio's "Supper at Emmaus." It's a brilliant Trompe-l'œil masterpiece that was painted in 1601. Unsurprisingly, it's full of Christian symbolism. It depicts the moment when the recently resurrected Christ reveals himself to Cleopas and an unnamed disciple before disappearing. I presume it has some symbolic meaning in the context of "Heartstopper," but what that might be escapes me at the moment. Did Elle's painting kind of imitate it? I think I may have to rewatch that episode. I feel things like that aren't highlighted for no reason in films. The painting usually resides at the National Gallery in London. So, was it on loan to the Louvre or were some of these scenes shot in London? The room with the Babylonian sculptures and bas-relief is definitely in the Louvre. The real "Mona Lisa" is actually on display, but you're prevented from getting too close to it by a barrier, and it's behind bullet-proof glass. It's also a pretty small painting. At least that's my recollection from the last time I was there. There's always a mob of people around it, too. You actually can't see it very well because of the glass and not being able to get close to it, and all because people have behaved like barbarians in the past. Edit: Okay, upon reexamination, Elle's painting is a reimagining of the Caravaggio. When I first saw it, the composition did ring a bell. Anyway, Elle is substituted for Christ. Her painting is a metaphor of her transition from boy to girl. The boy is dead, the girl is alive. That's the resurrection. Charlie and Isaac knew Elle before her transition and after her coming out as trans (eyes opened so to speak), so they assume the roles of Cleopas and the unnamed disciple. The three people who are part of the queer community are seated at table. Tao takes the place of the standing innkeeper. Tao, the nominally straight friend, isn't part of the queer world per se, but he's part of the safe-space triad formed by all the figures which reside in the art room. (Actually, I think Tao is just as queer as the rest of them. What did our reactors say? Straight of body, gay of mind?) It's quite interesting to have this level of symbolism in a tv series. Usually, I only see it in serious films. So, yeah. Anyway, I do like her painting and get it, even if it is a little OTT.
Hi guys - I find it interesting the slow but gradual build up to Charlie's eating disorder becoming known by Nick. It has been a slow burner. I understand how Nick feels helpless. I would be in the same position, thinking what can I do to help the person I love, but there isn't really an answer to that which will fix it all. You can see it in Nick's eyes.
I feel like not many people see it in the first season but the slow build up of it in the first season to then the second season eventually to the 5th episode where it's at its worse. I definitely didn't see it in the first season till I went back and rewatched it
@@makncheese9628 They were clever in not directly addressing it in season one, just tiny hints - Charlie stirring his cereal in the morning but never once taking a mouthful of it. When he sits with Tao and Isaac on the outside bench, his lunch is untouched, he only sipped on a carton of milk. When in the art class his lunch box has all his food in it, and he looks at it and never eats. Also slightly in the cinema when Nick asks him if he wants popcorn and he says he is not hungry. Also, one moment missed by everyone, when they were at the beach, and Nick decides to share fish and chips with Charlie, his face looks like he is about to be sick when he tries on chip, it is a very short moment, but it is there.

They say that when they don't eat, they have control, they are in charge, and it gives their brain a feeling of being secure. Yes, it has terrible effects, but it makes them feel in control of their life, which is exactly what Charlie feels. Problem for Charlie is, he has Nick, his beautiful caring boyfriend. He has a strong friendship group around him. You would think this would help, but the damage has been done to his mind, and Charlie really should see a therapist.

as someone who has read the comics before the show came out i've been waiting so long for the louvre kiss!! everytime reactors want them to kiss before hand I always restrain myself from spoiling it
I love it when the episode abruptly stopped and they were like shocked :)
Charlie and Nick being articulate makes me so happy ❤
When I was really deep in my ed, I knew everything about it. It helped me feel better to understand it, and it was all I thought about so I went looking for any content that had a character with an ed. Hearstopper so far has been both the least triggering and one of the more accurate ones
Fun little trivia: the security guard is the director of the show! I love that him and the creator of this entire universe, Alice, get to have little cameos. They’re all so close as a cast and crew and it’s so awesome!
I think Tao’s overreaction to the hickey is because he’s always hyper aware of even the slightest thing that could result in the bullying of Charlie.
Tao and Elle finally having that cute moment made my heart melt
It makes me just so happy to watch these two laughing together
Really enjoyed your reactions to this episode. Love Josh's reaction to seeing Charlie loving Nick speaking french. Thanks guys.
I alway love ur reactions so mutch. They way they are handeling Charlies ED is so beatifully done
“Run towards the security man!” Same
Literally obsessed with this show ... Also, obsessed with you guys. Both of you are hilarious
You guys are the funniest & yet you also notice & say some of the best stuff! Thanks. 💜
The signs started in season 1
The problem with this stuff in TV shows is that actors usually don't really eat in scenes where their characters eat. It really bugged me in Big Bang Theory where they would always just move stuff around their plate instead of eating. So picking up on this is much harder since most people just ignore this because they are used to people on screen not actually eating.
He did. When he puts the spoon in the bowl, you can literally hear the spoon against the cereal
@@Xizile93 that’s true. But Charlie also says multiple things that help hint at it as well. Or purposefully closes his lunch without touching it as well
You are both so funny! No other reactors make me laugh out loud this much
I absolutely love your Isaac appreciation.
Glad I'm not the only one that was confused that they ran towards the guard lmao
Very insightful!
Seriously, that's your new Merch idea
"I'm a marketing nightmare."
I'd buy that 🤷
Get you someone who looks at you like Tao looking at Elle looking at a painting.
The way Mr. Ajayi knows about Nick and Charlie, so he probably just wanted to split them up. Maybe Mr. Farouk thinks they're friends who don't stop talking, or he's putting them in isolation again?
Your reactions to the abrupt end to the episode HAHA
At 5:22 - as soon as I heard Mr Ajayi say "we will be putting you in pairs" I knew 100% certain Nick and Ben would be placed together. I just knew it, and then when they were put together, I just laughed.
I love that Tao and Elle where making out and Charlie was just unconscious in the next room. They got rid of the scene tho when Tao asks if Charlies ok but it makes sense bc in the comics Tao didnt know about nick and Charlie till the Eiffel tower and they had a fight and thats how they made up so like it makes sense but it would have been funny to see it. Also every single person ive seen reacting to these is always like "how tf did harry see it from over there" makes my day every time i hear it 😭
The painting Elle looks at of the four men inspires her painting for the art collage.🫶💙🫶💙🫶💙🫶💙🫶💙🫶
You two are the best!!! Such positive vibes - I have a continuous smile watching you two. You deserve all good things!
You’re not the only ones wanting the Farouk 🙈 Trixie and Katya had the same reaction as you and I cracked up when they said it too 😂
They’ve said the angry security guard at the louve was their director lol
Best. Six. Months. Ever!
😂 the teachers really paired the gay and lesbian students together
Straight of body, gay of mind?)
It's quite interesting to have this level of symbolism in a tv series.
@@johnking5174 ya they did a really good job. It's goes to show how easy it is to hide it from people. Most people who watch it don't pay attention to these things. But again it goes to show that someone can have it and you just never know.
@@makncheese9628 Sadly I have first hand experience of someone with an eating disorder. They said it is like them taking charge of their stomach.
@@johnking5174 same. My sister had one and no one ever knew until it was too late. It just shows how much they go un noticed.
When I had my eating disorder I was self aware, to a point, I knew why I was doing it but I was blind to how bad it was getting. I’m better now though.
I know what you mean. Only later I saw how bad it actually was and now I am at a point where I can think back and see it through my friends' eyes and how awful it must have been for them to not be able to do anything about it. Glad to hear you're better now.
@@noemisarah98 the hard part is no one noticed, I had to heal myself, it sucked. But I’m happy that I’m doing better, even if I’m not completely healed.
21:00 lol, your reaction to the end was amusing! :)
So excited to see your reaction and wht you have to say about this episode!
There actually is a shirtless pic on his fundraising page! 🔥🔥😂
i need y'all to know that in the comics tao didn't know about nick and Charlie yet and when he saw the hickey charlie fully told him he fell and hit his neck on the corner of the sink and HE BELIEVED IT UNQUESTIONINGLY😭😭😭
Actually I shoot with them for the episode 6, but I was just an extra. Around E6 11:11, I’m the blond guy in pink close to the bus stop 😅
MORE OF PARIS PARIS and Oui Oui Baguette
Not sure why, but yours are always my favorite Heartstopper reactions.
My French knowledge was incomplete without ‘Je suis confused’.
Good job, guys. I love watching you guys interact around “gay shit.” You were good here. I am looking forward to your takes on further sessions, esp 7 & 8.
I'm so excited to see their reaction to episode 6 and the ending of episode 8
Love your reactions, always both funny and interesting. Personally when someone tell me I'm not eating enough I instantly lost any appetite, and I'm not even in Charlie's condition, so I think Nik got it right xD Love from Italy (with a lot of understanding for Darcy)
James is much braver and mature gay. I want to see his story.
No big surprises here, but I’m back to watch yet again! Thanks Alex and Josh
Yes I’m still smitten by my favorite scene! 😍🪭
To be fair, a *LOT* of people find the Mona Lisa to be completely underwhelming, especially compared to everything else there is to see in the Louvre.
I had an epiphany about the show watching your reaction, but I can’t say what it was because it would be a spoiler for later in the season. Thanks for that unintended revelation!
Oh, please do share when the time is right!
@@elisabethbauman6190 When they get to episode seven I’ll be able to.
In my unprofessional opinion, concealer/makeup will only make the hickey worse and someone has to do touch up in the Parisian summer. Not happening. Also, no to Turtlenecks and Scarves.
Looove all your commentary
I love these reactions and I know u guys with love the end of the season ❤️
To answer your intro question……YES! 😜
He shall for this day forward be known as Prison David.
The painting that made Elle stop and look will mean something in a later episode. It inspired her ☺️. You will see.
20:27 fun fact...the security man is the director - Euros Lynn.
Love that Alice got her cameo and now Euros. Hopefully Patrick next season.
I hope you guys will review RWRB.
love this show also PLEASE tell me you and reacting to red white and royal blue!
Ive got a nickey! 😂 best line ever lmao

Glad you guys picked up on Charlie unconsciously using his protectiveness over Nick as a distraction from his own mental health struggles.
This situation worries me, it really does.
Oh my can't wait ! 😊
I love your reactions.
