53 year old gay man from north London here. Heartstopper is a thing of the most unspeakable beauty. I suspect that in time it will be seen as a seminal event in our cultural history. Enjoy. 😃
In case you didn't know! This show is based on a graphic novel series of the same name by Alice Oseman (who has had a huge part in directing both seasons, so the show is a really really good adaptation of her original creative vision). Also, that's why the editing of the show has little animations and cut-scenes that look like comic panels, to pay homage to the original source! And they did such a fantastic job with casting, all of the actors look just like the characters in the comics
@@jeslycruz Also kinda a cool fact, Heartstopper (the graphic novel series) is a SPIN-OFF of Alice Oseman's debut novel, Solitaire (which is about Tori Spring, Charlie's sister). Solitaire is about a year later and Charlie, Nick, and Ben are secondary characters in the book. People loved Charlie's story so much in Solitaire, Alice Oseman wanted to write Heartstopper to show Charlie's 'origin story'.
As a 36-year-old gay male, I can confirm we older gay men do in fact love and obsess over this show. I really do hope you finish ALL the other episodes and post your reactions on here as I enjoyed this. Also based on your reactions, I can recommend enough to check out the webcomics of this as the artwork and everything is equally adorable.
I'm 15 years old and I'm bisexual and this tv show has been my comfort show, and favourite, ever since it came out. This is genuinely a great tv show and I love the representation in it. This show is just so wholesome. Everything in the show just warms my heart and makes me feel so happy. I'm so glad you decided to react to it.
You’re making smile so wide with your reaction, you pick up on all the little details and it’s making me feel like I’m watching it with someone who actually pays attention and appreciates what they’re watching.
The British school system starts with year 1 being the same as the American kindergarden, so their years are one ahead of ours. Our year 9 (freshman) is their year 10 and so on. Charlie is a freshman and Nick is a sophmore.
So would Charlie be in his 1st year of high school? Bc I was under the impression that he had been there the year before too bc the older students are the ones who finally stuck up for him.
@@Maggie_08 No, their high school would go from UK Year 7 to UK Year 13 (roughly equivalent to US 6th Grade to US Senior Year). Often Year 11 is the top year of a UK high school and then they'd go to a separate College for Year 12-13, but Truham and Higgs are private schools which I think is why they have Year 12-13 at the same school (but often somewhat separated from the younger years - eg, the Year 12-13 kids have a different uniform and may be based in a different part of the campus). Hoping I got the details right - here in Australia we have a different schooling system in each state/territory, but where I grew up is probably most similar to the UK system.
@@EmonEconomistbit late, but Truham and Higgs aren’t private schools. Kent is one of three areas in the UK that have state grammar schools (the others being Buckinghamshire, where a lot of Heartstopper was filmed, and Northern Ireland). Many schools have an integrated sixth form (years 12 and 13). Year 11 (age 15/16) is the end of general education in the UK: years 12 and 13 are specialised in up to four subjects and is called further education as opposed to secondary education (years 7 to 11). The UK also has up to a year in school before Year 1 called ‘Reception’ which you start when you turn 4 and which gets you used to being in a school setting. The phone rule is to minimise cyber bullying as they can be used to record people and take photos. I went to school before the bans and I got outed by text message during the school day because of that so I understand the rule.
Definitely. I’m not sure if she’s lgbtqia+ (this is the first time I’ve watched her channel) or if she’s an amazing ally but either way, I’ve subscribed and will watch all her videos. She’s amazing!!
@@KikeNavarrete68 Yes, he handles the heavier subjects relating to his character beautifully. And they both are brilliantly like their book counterparts.
As an Older Gay, I can absolutely confirm that I love seeing this. Not just the representation, but also thinking about what it would have meant to me as a queer kid trying to figure myself and the world out, to have a story like this? Incredible. Count me in for your entire Heartstopper journey! :)
A year late but oh well. You are correct that Year 11 is equivalent to Sophomore. It depends for after Highschool (secondary school). You can choose to go to college or sixth form. Sixth forms is Years 12-13, where as college here, you just call it 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year on your chosen course. Typically you can't go to Sixth form at any age, you usually have to be 16-19, but here, you can go to college at any age. You go to college for free, but if you join when your over 18, you have to pay, unless to have circumstances that let you be exempt from payment. There's even options to not go to either of these. However, you have to either be in an apprenticeship, traineeship, or spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training, until the age of 18. IK, I didn't have to put this here, but I felt like info dumping here, to give further information on British educational laws and culture.

This show is amazing and since season 2 came out and I've been watching those reactions, I've started to miss that fresh, new "don't know the story yet" reactions even more. I'm a 40 year old bi woman and I am totally obsessed with this show. So is my 15 year old son and 14 year old daughter. There is just something about it that resonates with almost everyone watching it. I remember being only 12/13 when I realized that I liked both boys and girls (Halle Berry is my Queen and I'd leave my wife for her if she asked LOL), but there was ZERO representation for anyone Bi and practically nothing for the queer community in general. I hid it for most of my life, just insisted I was an ally, until I was almost 34 and my wife came out as trans. She was the first person I came out to. Unfortunately, because we love eachother and I didn't leave her when she was transitioning, people badgered me to the point where I was basically forced to come out of the closet- something I definitely wasn't ready for. I think that's why this show is so special especially to me and my family. We're all represented here.
Loved you reaction ! And yes I'm obessed with this show, it's so wholesome and genuine and cute and it tackles really important issues and the representation is great. I already watched season 2 three times since it came out. Can't wait for you to be there !
Hi! British person here: Year 11 would be sophomore year. It’s the year you do your GCSE’s, which are the exams you have to do to get base level qualifications, similar to your high school diploma. Year 12 and 13 are your a-level years, and you would spend those in a sixth form (ie in the same school you did your GCSE’s) or a college (where it’s just those two years and they often offer more vocational studies like engineering or hairdressing etc) Nick is Year 11, Charlie is Year 10 (a freshman)
“And where’d you come from? I thought this was an all boys school.” 😂😂😂 Idk why that was so funny to me, but it was! Also, to actually answer your question, they were just hanging out before school. It is implied that the girls’ and the boys’ schools are really close together.
Gay male here, watching this show was weird, I never have watched a show with gay characters in it that mirrored my reality and experience and expressions growing up so well. It was relatable on a level I think is probably normal to straight people, but never experienced myself. I cried countless times.... kind of messed up it took this long for me to actually relate to any depiction of us in media.
Yr 11 here is ages 15-16 so for you guys it’s 10th grade ❤ also loved watching you react to this show I has very similar reactions the first time I watched it 🤣
Am very late to this but I don’t see an explanation in the comments: year 11 is like sophomore year for us, except it’s slightly different because year 12 and 13 (junior and senior year) are called “A-Levels” where you focus on only 4(?) subjects to ultimately take a huge test on them at the end of year 13 (senior year)

Don't know the US Year 11 equivalent is but it's our last year of secondary school where everybody leaves aged 16 (or 15 if you haven't had your birthday before the next academic year in September)
There are years prep then 1-12 1-6 is primary school 7-12 is high school and 10, 11 and 12 are sienors at least that’s how it is in Australia and it’s basically the same in Britain

I used to be British now i live in the states lol, year 11 is the 11th grade but that is their senior year. They don’t have a 12th grade. After “year 11” or the 11th grade they either go to a six form (transition schooling to college) or college or university.
