Thank you so much Thomas Frank. This is a God-send. I got this internship recently for a well-respected government tech agency, where I’m required to read through these long, jargon-heavy software engineering requirements documents. I ended up yelling at myself while driving recently because yet another day of inefficiency went by where I couldn’t focus for long. I thought to myself that I remember being able to focus a lot better in high school. “Why can’t I now?” I believe we’re close to the same age. I’m 26. So I grew up with the same experience that you did as you described. This video came out in a timely manner for me. I am sure with this knowledge I will be able to work on focusing on long-term items again. I believe that we can get better at anything with practice, and this video helped scientifically confirm for me what is going on. Have a great day, Isaiah

When I clicked on this video and saw that it was 17 minutes long, I actually decided to watch it on fullscreen. I do that every now and then when I feel too overwhelmed by the internet. It is funny that you also suggested doing that. It makes sense. I miss the times when I could focus on one thing and I didn't have to multi-task or be aware of everything that was happening in the world. I am trying to get back to such a life.
I was glad that you had read and mentioned "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains". It is a great book.
I am tired of being distracted all the time. I miss being fully engaged in something or reflecting on life and the universe. I always feel like I am running out of time nowadays and I am certain this is because of our minds getting distracted all the time. I used to even be afraid to turn on the wifi on my phone because I'd get bombarded by notifications. After deactivating notifications, my phone is more bearable, but still toxic. I may sound like an old person now, but I feel so sorry for the generation that may never experience boredom the way we used to before smartphones started having such a great impact on our lives.

I was thinking yesterday how I haven't had to write much for my jobs in the past few years and I was wondering if I would be any where as good as what I use to, also the same thing with critical thinking. This video came just at the right time, I still love to read, and watching TedTalks is a good way to learn new information while keeping a long focus.

Big questions raised for me here- what if you can concentrate on reading and watching movies and doing something outside for long periods of time, but you're mostly watching/reading/doing something that is entertaining to you? Does it still count? Because if so, I guess my attention span is pretty good, only affected by anxiety problems.
Thanks so much for this video, a topic that I've found super important for the past few years, great to hear your perspective and I might have to check out that book if theres a lot more to it!

I love those silly edits in-between that you don't even notice and you go back like "wait, what?"
Like you playing your guitar as a violin with a ladle xD

I see a video only after asking my self is the video fun or informative.
This video is definitely yes to both
I have reduced my 10hrs a day internet usage to a 3 hrs. I hope this video also helps me as well

i really found myself being in more difficulty when trying to concentrate.. when i study and have to do readings, my concentration gets so easily shifted away... it’s very frustrating 😅 and i already got the fact that internet is the main factor in this. i spend too much time and it’s really hard to control myself lol. thank you for all the little tips!
