Ever since Halo CE, I looked at those thing and thought "Those fuckers could totally start walking around" but they never did - I feel pretty vindicated rn not gonna lie.
Man we used to rip on Bungie all the time. But they made the best Halo. We'll see what 343i does with infinite. I won't be playing it I'll just watch it from my damn phone.
Honestly, those shade turrets would be terrifying. Imagine you're playing LASO and manage to get past an area with them in it then you turn around and see them chasing you down.
There should've been an elephant defense level in 3, where, on ur way to (dedicated area) The covenant spot you and try to stop you, and the walking shades would attempt to shoot at you, and youd be bombarded with elites in ghosts and revenants.
Holy cow, almost 14 years later, and people are STILL finding new stuff in this game. That blows my mind. Edit: my mistake, I just never saw this before. Also, cheese.
Also where did this beta come from? I can tell you're really excited in this video, but I'd like to hear more of the story behind this beta, and maybe you could experiment with more in this beta. You may want to consider doing a follow up video on this, it's really interesting.
It was found in an Xbox 360 dev kit that someone purchased online. It's not the first time something like this was found, either: a Halo 2 alpha still running on the CE engine was found in a dev kit someone discovered in their attic, and it was even played on a stream with Frank O'Connor.
I feel like "were meant to be forge-able" is a bit misleading. It's probably more likely that active objects in the game world aren't locked by default (since that would probably be annoying to deal with during development), and the devs left going through the effort of locking forge canvas access to them later in development once they were closer to release.
Now, that was fraking AWESOME! Really enjoyed watching this one, another one of my favorites I've seen. Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year, Generalkidd.
The heritic banshee honestly makes a lot of sense as the place holder since there isn't a revision of it in Halo 3 and it would make finding all the old placeholder assets alot easier given their easy to tell visual differences.
The trip mine used to also attach to the underside of warthogs magnetically. You wouldn’t be able to tell unless you saw the orange glow. The second the warthog moved, it would blow. Halo 3 public beta days are one of my fondest childhood memories
2:33 - The bubble shield from Starry Night was shown in the ViDoc Quisnam Protero Damno on High Ground, but it was using the Radar Jammer/Power Drain 3d asset. It was shown rolling down a hill. Looks like they used the same particle bubble effect and just changed the model.
At this point, I'm more interested in learning about the development of the first three Halo games than actually playing them. EDIT: Saying something was "meant" to be in the final game because it's in a pre-release build implies intent that may not even exit. There's still experimentation that's going on, even that late in development and it's difficult to determine how all the competing visions at Bungie coalesced from what is essentially a single snapshot of the game's development timeline.
What this video shows me is that Bungie and 343 industries has the ability to recreate very dynamic objects available in forge. Creating swinging gates, trees that sway when you hit them, etc...
The Shade Turret appeared to use the physics engine with its legs to walk. Look how it starts to tilt as soon as one of the legs pushes down on the curb etc, and how it doesn't have a linear movement speed but instead appears to be carried by each individual leg. No wonder it was cut.
I remember playing a modded version of Valhalla on the 360 that had all those little trees scattered across the map like a small forest. Actually made it pretty impossible to do anything on the map since all those trees would get in the way, but I still saved it because it was an odd map. Might have to go set up the 360 again and see if there was anything else hidden there in Forge.
That throwable bomb would’ve been a perfect counter to Armor lock in Reach, would’ve been so satisfying to see some asshat pop out of armor lock only to be blown sky high moments later
The way the shade turrets move is so creepy... Could make an awesome custom game where zombies spawn with no weapons and they have to get in the shade turrets and walk towards the human base and invade Would be like a fucking alien invasion or something War of the worlds
dont know if this was ever noticed but the anti air gun in halo reach's oni sword base mission IS vehicle and walking up to it theres a prompt to "enter warthog gunner seat" but no matter how much you try you cant get in
I guarantee those objects were never "meant to be forgable", bungie probably didn't code the functionality to make them not forgable yet. You should test to see if when you move them in forge and load up your custom map in slayer, will the object's new position be saved?
Exactly, having them forgeable at this point in development makes sense as it would allow the dev to make simple adjustments to try stuff out. He should try to think a bit more from a developers perspective in these kind of videos as they'd clear up a lot of things and prevent myths from floating around.
Official map variants like Snowbound's "Boundless," which alter seemingly hardcoded map objects, are implemented as Forge maps. These objects are "Forge objects," but were only meant to be used by the developers, not end users.
It's likely that every object in the game has a flag that dictates if an object is forgable or not. I'd agree that it's unlikely these objects are meant to be moved (especially important map elements such as the guardian turrets and grav lifts) and that the issue is that the flags to disable them bugged, devs left them unflagged for internal reasons, or a mix of both. This kind of thing would not be uncommon 6 months away from launch on a project his big.
That shade turret concept probably evolved from the Halo:CE turret... Those legs are very similar to that; it's actually a quite interesting concept tbh
I'm porting models out of the Halo games for... Reasons. It's an arduous journey, and your videos are keeping my ADHD brain focused on getting this shit done
For the shade turret they might put the locust vehicle in the game that acts just like that. They can move and plant themselves on the ground for a stable aim, this could for the same with blisterbacks
Wasn’t there a Banshee on Snowbound in the public Halo 3 Beta? That prototype Excavator was directly inspired by a similar weapon in the pre-Xbox build of Halo CE, that served as a Covenant counterpart to the shotgun.
