      Thanks so much! I also learned that I have enough of the right mix layers and can leave my monster parka at home. :)

    Absolutely loved the video. Great view at 4:00 mark. Very interesting backpack. Do you have a gear video of watch you take backpacking? I’ll be checking out your other videos

      Thanks! I have a pseudo gear vid I did actually while on this hike. It takes over from 12:26 - it was dark outside and figured it was a fun use of my time. That video is here: th-cam.com/video/HUj-dgS6CRY/w-d-xo.html
      It did not show what I was wearing nor did it show everything I normally carry. I plan to do a better one with my normal contents some time soon. The pack in this vid is a Kelty White Cloud 6500. It's an old school spectra pack from the 90s. My normal pack is also a Kelty White Cloud, but the much smaller 3400. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

    Awesome hike, my friend. Glad you survived those frigid temps. If it was 1 degree down in Tyro, I bet it was at least 3 or 4 degrees COLDER up there at the Shelter. You had a festive mood with the lights though! I guess I missed that drop on that hat. I've been interested in those myself. It looks good. Great shout outs, I'm subbed to both. That Glass Hollow Overlook was nice. There are some awesome views up in that area, I've actually not yet been on that section of AT north of Humpback though, I need to go check it out.

      There is some great trail here in south SNP. Visiting the Chimney Rock as I type this. I may bail tomorrow...it’s colder than the last hike!

    A couple of observations: 1. Is that a new backpack you're rocking? What is it? 2. Looks like you're losing weight...?
    Always good to come up with a backup plan that works! That was a cold trip! I have one this weekend, supposed to be down in the teens. It will be my coldest trip by far to date, so we'll see how it goes! Nice video!

      Thanks - and good eye! The pack I was using on this hike is a 'vintage ultralight' Kelty While Cloud 6500. These come up on eBay every now and then and I've managed to snag a couple. It's a 3.7lb pack as configured and is 106litres. My normal / main pack is also a Kelty White Cloud and is 3400 cubic inches (55 litres) - it weighs just over 2lbs. I'm down about 20lbs since I've stopped eating nearly all junk food (contains Alpha-Gal carbohydrate that I'm allergic to from the tick bite disease). I'm actually needing to eat more at meals and I don't drink diet soda any more just to keep calorie count up. I'm still adjusting to being partial Vegan. Thanks so much for commenting!

    Awesome video! Any major lessons learned from your night out in the cold? And thanks for the shout out!

      Water was more of an issue that I thought. Staying warm was ok - but hard water is hard to use! Making hard water soft consumes precious fuel... :)

    Brrrr.... I'm somehow jealous though. :) Beautiful sunrise. And thanks for scoping the shelter - Rockfish south is my next section when I get back to the AT. The snow issue was interesting, one second you were asking for anti-lock help, and the next it was just gone. Was it just above a certain elevation?

      I was actually a north south cutoff - there was no apparent snow at the top of RockFish, but at RT33 there was almost 3". It's a super cool area to hike, great shelter for scouts. Thanks for watching!

    Another great video. What did you use for your sleep system and how comfortable were you at 1° with that setup? Thanks!

    • @KrizAkoni
      @KrizAkoni  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! My sleep system is not refined for cold weather. What I did was nest two sleeping bags - my wife's cosmic down 30 with my cosmic down 20. According to internet lore, the following formula can be used for combined bag warmth: [x -(70 - y)/2 = z], where for me X=20 and Y=30; 20-(70-30)/2=0. I wore a pair of wool socks, base layer (light) long underwear tops/bottoms, a long sleeve wicking tee shirt and 1 fleece layer...and a hat. i was quite comfortable. I'll sometimes use a zippo hand warmer between my legs in the bag where the blood flows to warm my insides when I come in from outside. Thanks for the great comments and thanks for watching!

      KrizAkoni Thanks for that equation- I have a 10° loco libre quilt coming in a week or 2 & 40° thermarest quilt so was looking at doing exactly what you did there. I read its best to use synthetic down as top layer and goose for under layer- idea being top layer can take the condensation and not lose insulating value. I'm in Maryland too so your videos have been fun and helpful since we cover the same areas. Thanks!

    I love your video but the background music is very distracting and annoying.

      @KrizAkoni  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume you're referring to the metal music in the 1st half of the video...yea, I won't be doing that any more. That shelter area is very well set up and the loop hike near it is very nice. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! :)
