  • I bought a new rake implement for my tractor that will help me remove the pine needles building up on the forest floor threatening to cause a forest fire. I also apply varnish to the installed hardwood floor of the off grid log cabin and show off the duck eggs!

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

I think about the time I started hearing "The power of Greystroke" being mentioned on telly, I'd wondered why Bugs Bunny and the Roadrunner weren't good enough anymore and gave cartoons up. Moving somewhere with only one blurry tv channel helped a lot too. Daily fishing managing to get me out of bed much earlier than the weekend cartoons ever had... plus I had work to get back to start later.

Good work guys. I recall painting my house 20 years ago with a roller and a long stick. I used a telescope stick reaching up to eight meters. My neighbors came out several times to see what I was doing since that method is not really common here. They must have had a good laugh but I did not care. I managed to paint all the walls twice with that reaching the highest boards too and no scaffolding was needed at all. That was a success.

A tip that may prevent losing your shackle (clevis?) in the future. If the pin has a hole in it on the handle part run a piece of bailing wire through and loop it around the body of the shackle. this should prevent it from turning and if it doesn't it should at least keep them together when it falls off.

Of course, I couldn’t wait. I can’t start off my Saturday morning without. Ya know Kevin, I think it’s going to take a long time to clear out all those needles. I don’t envy you on that. You will have to let us know. Too bad COVID happened because I would have loved to take a detour up to Canada on my way out to Saratoga Lake, NY for my summer camp this year, and my passport is expired. You might need to rent a small skid steer to get in between the trees with the tongs on the bucket. You could rake and pile. And, maybe dig a big hole and bury them. x x x

  • @ghomerhust
    @ghomerhust ปีที่แล้ว

on our farm, any time we used a drag implement, like a blade or your rake, we would put a few big cinder blocks on it to help it really sink down into the material. that rake has several big holes along the width, you could easily make a simple tray to plop some blocks on it. that way it wouldnt want to roll over the pine floor as much, it would dig a little more methinks.

Thinning out your pines will create new floor growth. The sun need to hit the ground! Raking the needles might help speed up that process but your initial efforts must be to get the sun down there. Also, decomposing organic matter on the ground floor (downed trees, pine needles ect.) increases the soils biodiversity to encourage new growth. The fine line on when to help nature in preventing a forest fire is in the hands of the land owner and that my friend is you! Love the channel

A few years of use, the old one started to rip. The screen seems to be too thin to weld back to the filter frame. I tried.
Maybe you should torch it clean & solder or epoxy. Add some 12ga wire on the sides from top to bottom.
Basically, this filter screen is too weak to be moved repeatedly.

Oh, I remember what I was going to tell you. I watch a lot of machinists. They can usually make parts for at least half the price or the big name manufacturers. I see these massive big pieces of steel turned down to parts for CATs and all sorts of massive machines. I wondered a long time why they didn't buy a new one until the machinist dropped that nugget of truth, plus the extended time and OEM part takes to arrive. Seems the manufacturers have to have them made too, most of the time.

You should tarp the needles for composting. You could make some side coin selling organic forest mulch or put it in your own garden. Just spitballin it here.

You missed the varnish on the right side with the brush (left side from the door view). Then left it dry two or 3 inches or a billion millimeters or so, (whatever they are) with the roller. I know you'll go back and get it later, but just in case you didn't notice, lol. Excellent teaching, by the way.

Sweep the pine needle duff into spaces with 10 feet between them, then periodically burn the needle-piles one at a time
That way you're simulating the natural fire patterns without lighting the whole forest on fire

productive episode. glad you got the tractor sorted out and the cabin is looking great. funny story the family across the road from me here in a quebec town close to ottawa randomly saw your evaporator video and was trying to copy it. i couldn't help but notice the design around the half way point of them cutting through the oil tank they picked up. they asked me for help since i can weld and put it together for them i mentioned your channel to confirm and told them i was a regular viewer got a couple mason jars of syrup out of it. have to love our small world and a delicious synchronicity's.

Let them hatch a family...and you will soon have more ducks (if you can protect them.)

You could put it in the pine needles in a container and force air through them and like them on fire and burn them up
