I had a brand new kwikset smart key lock and found the key it came with did not work. Made my own cylinder release tool and had the lock functioning in 20 mins. Thank you, it saved my time, travel and money.
Worked for me but with a caveat! You must keep the key in the lock if you do not have the original key or the relearning failed previously! In the steps after you put the sidebar back, I kept the key in the entire time, and put the retaining pins back in then relearned it, and it worked!
You are amazing. I supply entry jobs to new construction. Had three that got installed with about being keyed to the contractor key. I had to build my own removal tool then I followed your directions and rekeyed all 3 of them. I cannot say thank you enough for this video.
A few months back, the house cleaners lost our house key. So I began the process of rekeying my house. Not sure what I did but several stopped working and I couldn't reset them at all. Fortunately I started with doors that we hardly ever use...so I stopped. I was about to buy all new locks (and charge the cleaners) when they found the key in the office. Then, last week our front door stopped working; the key wouldn't spin any more. I knew there was a way and I found this video. I tried using a fat, flat head, but it just wouldn't allow me to get the cylinder out. So I bought the tool. These instructions were spot on and it took me maybe an hour to do 6 of the lock sets that were bad. The only thing I would add to the instructions is: Before you remove the cylinder, but a little dot with a sharpie on the cylinder and on the handle (I marked the fat side of the key, not where the teeth were). That way when you reassemble you put it back the way you had it. Of course, if you want to rotate the key 180°, then put the dot where you want the fat end (or teeth) to go. Oh, be careful, those little side pins like to jump off and bounce on a hard wood floor. Lastly, I used an unbent paper clip to align the slide pins. That allowed me to align all the slide pins at the same time.
Thank you for posting this video. I had two locks that I left keyed to my builders key until he completed all his work. I never got that key so I had 2 locks with no key for 3 years. I was able to re-key in minutes with your help. Just be careful folks that there are 2 very small springs in the side of the cylinder that can fall out if you're not careful. Finding them on carpet is almost impossible.
Hi, is it possible to convert a Kwikset entry lock to a Storeroom function by cutting of the inside metal rod? please let me know if this could work. Thank you
For some reason when I push the core back into the knob it can pretty easily just be pulled back out again. Is there something that is supposed to keep it in besides the two black hook things? Any idea how to fix? Thanks for the video!
No that’s pretty much it you done what you supposed to do. If it doesn’t keep staying there so it may be a different problem. Try to expand the space between two black hooks
@@S.E.Locksmith hmm, yeah I just used some pliers and spread them way apart and pushed it back in. Pushing it back in seems to bend the black bars back to normal but then it just can be pulled out again. Weird, maybe when I knocked the core out it broke how it clip in or something.
I’m trying to rekey a new Lever and there is a shield that has been placed around the core and is crimped onto the core. Have you encountered one of these? How do you get the shield to come off or how do you rekey it now?
This is on the most recent Lever. There is a metal shield around the core that is crimped so that it cannot be removed except by cutting off the shield.
After I complete the steps and take they key out, I put it back in and the lock won’t turn. When I check the pins that last one is always up and locks up the side bar. I keep getting stuck here on all my home locks.

Awesome video that showed me exactly what I need to do to disassemble my Kwikset door handle/lock set for a reset! Thanks a million!
Is there any way to do this with a SmartCode 955 lock? Kwikset's instructions show you need the original key in order to remove the lever.
Saved me ALOT of time and Money!!!!!! Love the video
You saved me $50- thank you!
Excellent instructional video
Thank you! You saved me a bunch of time and headache trying to get my key to work.
We are happy to hear that
I was concerned it would be difficult to do, but it wasn't. Simply follow the steps shown and it was easy. Thanks for sharing this info.
Super Helpful!! Took a min to figure out but you definitely helped this handyman learn something new today Thank you!!!
Happy to help

It worked thanks for the help.

This video is AWESOME--worked perfectly!!!

You rule! It was difficult at first but I finally got it
I’m sooo happy to hear that

Great job
Hey buddy, Thank you so much for your video. You just stretched my income. Thanks again
How do you get the cylinder apart after you get it out of the knob assembly? It's different than the cylinder for the dead bolt
No it’s the same thing. Try to use a small tool (like paper clip) to fit inside and play with the pins until slowly you’ll be able to remove the core.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Our pleasure
Thanks for the info 👍
that totally saved me from throwin this effin thing through my window, awesome video , everything was explained well
Happy to help out
Thanks for the detailed video. NOTE: I used a flat head screw driver instead of the tool.

Yes it may be that something broke.
At this point I will recommend you to buy a new door knob
@@S.E.Locksmith ok will do. Thank you for the video anyway, at least I was able to fix the deadbolt with it :)
That’s great 😃
I have a storeroom lever. I need to remove the cylinder and it’s not like this one. How can I get the cylinder out on a storeroom lever?
I’m trying to rekey a new Lever and there is a shield that has been placed around the core and is crimped onto the core. Have you encountered one of these? How do you get the shield to come off or how do you rekey it now?
You have to push it out as I showed in the video

Go to our about page on our channel and send us an email with a picture of what are you talking about
What about the Kwikset smartkey padlock
You can’t rest the Kwikset Smartkey padlocks
Thank you so much for this knowledge! Followed your steps and now I've gotten my new deadbolt set working like a charm. Thanks so much...
My pleasure
I feel like you left us hanging with the lever lock.
After I complete the steps and take they key out, I put it back in and the lock won’t turn. When I check the pins that last one is always up and locks up the side bar. I keep getting stuck here on all my home locks.
Just be patient and try to do it again with extra cautious.
Believe me eventually it will work for you
@@S.E.Locksmith could it be because this lock is dirty? I may need to oil it up
Yes definitely sometimes it helps
This works!!!
I have problem with connection bluetooth to the smart lock not connect i try reset and nothing happens i need you help?
Try to call the lock brand customer service
The generation 3 cylinders are a lot easier to remove and work on.
Yes much easier I know
Awesome
Why did you switch to a deadbolt half way through the video, I clicked on this to reset my door knob lock
Because it’s the same reset process.
You never showed how to remove the Tumblr from the lever!!
