Onan Generator Troubleshooting and Repair

  • The RV is still in the shop (long story) and the trailer is still being built, so I'm sort of in between projects. I worked on this Onan Marquis 7000 generator for a little extra money and thought it might be interesting to some of you.
    Note: This is NOT the generator from our RV. This is from a stage trailer that my church bought.
    When I got the generator it wasn't running. Once I got it running it wouldn't produce any power. It turned out the carbs were all gunked up, the voltage regulator was bad, and the brushes needed cleaning.

    We have used the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! My generator is also shoehorned into the compartment with no way to reach anything. It was not making power either and the only way to get it out is to drop it out the bottom so your video saved me SO much work! Really appreciate you!

    Great Job! Good thing that missing screwdriver was on video.
    Be careful with PTFE tape on fuel systems, it has a tendency to unravel and clog filters or carbs with little Teflon threads. In the future opt for a paste type thread sealant for fuel.

    That quietness is the beauty of an 1800 rpm generator. New 3600 rpm generators are obnoxious, use loads of fuel even with light loads. If you’re handy with tools, an older Onan is better than any new generator on the market. Most of them have low hours and once you have them running again, they should be good for a long time as long as they don’t sit.
    If you want them to stay running you have to exercise them regularly. The biggest weakness of any generator is not using it.

    I wish you guys lived near me. I just bought a motorhome a couple weeks ago. I knew the generator wasn't working but I don't think I comprehend how important it was or how hard it would be to find someone who would even look at it let alone fix it. My friend thinks it's just the starter, but he was leaving town and didn't have time to look into it.

      I think my starter is bad too. I have the onan marquis 5000 and I would really like it to work....

    Do you know what this generator is technically called? I cannot find on the Cummins website which components are appropriate to purchase. I have recently purchased a motorhome with one of these generators and it needs and extensive service job due to sour gas in the lines and a gummed up carb.

    Great troubleshooting Mike. You mentioned the cable numbers you checked, but didn't mention how you knew to check them. Did you have a manual that gave you the correct pin out on this connector? Is this a quieter generator because it is on a stage trailer?

    I have a question I own one of these same kind generators and I was wondering if I have to use a certain electrical Box or do I just run a 120 outlet like for a fan Or a air compressor that I wanna run So this is OK to do instead of running the plug like the one you have on can you be just the regular 120 plug well too I appreciate if you can answer my questions thank you

    have an onan model hdkaj it shuts down on engine over speed when I run both ac units in hot weather in my rv, have had cummins do a run up for several hrs. could not find anything,had the ac units checked in cooler weather and it did not shut down, I suspect the rear ac unit is the cause, but it doesn't make sense to me

  • @robertrubey6224
    @robertrubey6224 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should have checked the slip ring to brush resistance. Also, that ground on the back of the generator for the battery should go all the way to the battery. I know people think that is nuts, but that ground being poor has destroyed more regulators on thos things.

    Oh Boy! Do I know someone that could use your help! She is a 60+, lone RVer that is having problems with tow lights for her TOAD vehicle. She has pulled everything apart, checked fuses and such. Can only get the left side lights to work. Nothing works on the right side. She wants to pull her hair out.
    She has voltage meters and all kind of things she has checked, but I think she uses the equipment wrong. If you have the time to look at a few of her videos, she is RVlady on TH-cam. The videos are within the last 2 weeks and she isn't a huge poster. Tell her Atlanta sent you! LOL That's what she calls me. She is on the west coast. Thanks so much!

  • @aday1637
    @aday1637 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You still did not do a permanent fix. You need to use a slip ring cleaning tool to polish them. Corrosion causes the voltage regulator to attempt to apply too much voltage to the field winding thereby causing it to burn open. This can also burn open the control board if you keep using it without a proper service. Very expensive. You should start the genset at least once a week or more often in humid or salty climate. I sell all the Onan generator service troubleshooting manuals on ebay.

    Oh, man seeing that screwdriver fall off the tailgate my eyes lit up! About 5 years ago I bought a Kobalt ratcheting screwdriver with bits inside for a quarter! I LOVE that thing and I have thousands of dollars in tools. Did you ever find it? Great diagnosis and repair, how many amps was that Onan? I have an older green one 2.5kw it has a bend pushrod, but I have the pushrod and replacement head I rebuilt to fix it... got the generator for nothing... it's that kind of society.

    • @weissbornjr
      @weissbornjr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that model should be putting out 50amps--at least mine does. FYI check out smokestack.com for help with Onans. Those guys are absolutely wizards. Helped me get my 7000 going whereas Cummins only wanted to sell me lots of parts for lots of $$$$

    You used regular taflon tape (white) gasoline and petroleum products are supposed to have a special teflon tape (yellow)

    • @NomadicGearhead
      @NomadicGearhead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn that's good to know, I have seen so many folk say regular teflon is fine for engine parts.

    • @robertrubey6224
      @robertrubey6224 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teflon tape is taboo on fuel systems because if a little price gets in carb under seat, you got a serious fire hazard. Seen it. On propane too.

    Now, come to my house and please fix mines. We just started hurricane season, and I need mines working. Mines has something wrong with the choke. It starts with the choke on, but if I press it all the way off after it starts, it shuts off. So, to keep the Generator engine on, I have to leave the choke between the on and off position. It works like that, but it's not suppose to work like that.

      your carb is all messed up. more than likely gummed up. take the carb apart and soak it in Pine Sol (all of the pieces). Yes Pine Sol. Then rebuild it.

    • @ugoleftillgorite
      @ugoleftillgorite 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never heard of using Pine Sol, that's interesting! I boiled motorcycle carbs in lemon juice and, man, they came out clean.

    • @I_Am_Michael
      @I_Am_Michael 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Pine Sol won't harm metal, plastic or rubber; unlike a lot of solvents. leave them to soak over night. place the tiny, easily misplaced parts in a screen type material so you can find them. soak away. then rinse them clean with water, dry real well (be gentle on small fragile parts) and rebuild. enjoy your handiwork afterwards.
