We play this as an 80s action TV show down to describing the characters by period actors. “Tonight’s special guest star: Lee Van Cleef as the Ninja Master “. So much fun.
Guest starring Jan Micheal Vincent as "The Pilot".
The Golden Ninja Warrior...
call me snake.
I wonder if "look at your ideas through crosshairs" is a more "cool" way of saying "kill your darlings."
It is. As you can see in the video, it's presented as part of the Play to Find Out principle from PbtA games. The crosshairs wording comes from Apocalypse World, where it's about making the storyworld a constantly changing and unpredictable place (anything can die at any moment). Here it's focused on the GM letting go of their own ideas for the story, letting the characters' actions take the story into unforeseen territory.
The "crosshair" bit comes from Apocalypse World, which constantly uses questionable language to "set the mood" or something, but there it means that the GM should actively think about subverting the status quo, overthrowing factions, killing NPCs. It's a much more story-oriented game.
In FIST, it looks like it basically means "let the players screw up your plans".
Let's go! FIST has been so fun for running Hellboy/BPRD games! You hit the nail on the head! I'm looking forward to the box set!
My favorite part is when the party shouts, "Get FISTed!"
This reminds me so much of the game FEAR, especially with that name
I've gotten this PDF in a few charity bundles. Respect to the creator for always supporting great causes! 🤘
Definitely going to give it a try now! Thanks for the vid! :D
Glad to see more attention around FIST! It's the single best OSR games I've gotten my hands on, and it deserves the spotlight.
That cover is cool. I love the design and simplicity of it.
I've found some awesome niche RPGs through this channel. Thanks a lot for the recommendation.
This might not be a bad system to run a game inspired by SIGNALIS. Rogue cyborgs with faulty memory inherited from a dead person, fighting in the shadow of an oppressive government in a "Cassette Future" setting. While in the background, the forces of barely understood magic and Lovecraftian gods bend both mind and flesh.
Remember our promise.
I guess it's finally time to pull the trigger on the Metal Gear X Resident Evil game I've been thinking about for years
Do it.
Has a SCP flavor. I like it.
what does that taste like ?
@@captinreveng1441 like a secret trans-national/ global organization that operates in utter secrecy in an attempt to maintain security from supernatural threats while keeping the general populace complete in the dark on their activities… and amnestics. Lots and lots of amnestics.
This one clicked with my group and it has been a blast since. I am so happy to see you cover it.
I believe the partial success table comes in the form a bookmark for KS backers, but that there's a printable file version also in the online materials.
FIST is great -- surprised that you're covering non-fantasy games, but I'll take em!
He also has a good vid on Mothership!
Thanks for the video! Am I the only one whose first thought was F.E.A.R. ?
Same here!
Surprised Delta Green wasn't listed as a inspiration.
It's going for a very different vibe, though.
idk feels more inspired by FEAR than DG
Roughly a third of old DG adventures can end with a good old federal raid. But like end of adventure rituals in other Cthulhu adventures, the path there is laden with investigation.
Action in BRP is gnarly. People are squishy. Even many monsters can't stand up to the automatic weapons rules. A firefight is not a drawn-out affair.
My wallet is again a little lighter thanks to Questing Beast. A game I didn't know I needed until today. Looks super fun!
This seems very much like Bureau 13.
I was wondering if anyone else would summon the ghost of Tri-Tac. Good times. 😃
Fist bout' to get a nice bump after this video, let's gooo!! 🙌🏻
Great review, Ben. Sounds like Hellboy/X Files meets the A Team/Mission Impossible! The intro definitely sounds like it's based on the A Team!😂😂😂😂
👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
Sold. Just got it!
I adore Agents of Odd, so I'll give a try. 😊
YES! Love this game omg
Great review! Love the concept of the game and the sheer wealth of advice and content is awesome. The "talking motorcycle" premade npc is gold. Shades of Heat Vision and Jack.
FIST! Love this game.
Oh hell yeah, I want to run a campaign of this so bad!
This was a random impulse buy a year or two ago and it has been cool to watch it grow and blow up with a kickstarter and a ton of hacks.
For my games, I've been running the FIST organization as a sort of suicide squad situation for various supernatural situations.
I've run a few sessions of this now and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Breeze to run. Full of flavor.
You can get FIST ULTRA for $5 on itch now with 528 other items with the TTRPGs for Trans Rights - West Virginia bundle. 3 days left!
I'm glad this game got covered. It is really fun.
This is rare case of PbtA-like game I really love! Been running for a last few months and it was a blast!
I’ve never seen a game like this that perfectly matches my OSR-PBTA fusion playstyle. It even includes my love of corny 80s action sci-fi.
"Who are the patriots? Who are the patriots!? Answer me!"
This game looks like the dream Mgs ttrpg ive been looking for! i was even contemplating making one myself, but now i guess i don't have to!
Great review, thanks for sharing. Con, I find PbtA to be very limiting as a mechanic. Pro, it should be easy to port this into d20. Looks like there a ton of fun tools and tables.
Survive a really bad trip... THE ACID IS KICKING IN.
We can't stop here it's paranormal country! 😝
It reminds me of those missions from Far Cry 4 where you go on a drug trip.
Obliterated show?
Send lawyers, guns, and money! The shit has hit the fan!
This gave me also FEAR vibes, that's like a big plot point
So happy to see this covered on this channel!
FIST is a fantastic game with a great community, if you're thinking of picking it up don't hesitate!
Hello, is Knave 2e going to be translated for Spain the same as it was with Knave 1e?
I love this game.
I wonder if this game could represent the certain operations of a particular British paranormal military and their operatives, including a certain dhampir police girl who likes cannons.
such a lyricist 👏
I keep telling myself I don't need another game but this sounds awesome.
Why is my version of FIST only 24 pages?! Nvm you explained it.
Already sold out on exalted funeral :(
The one thing I disliked in original Apocalypse World was hx, the relationship level between PCs. But it was easy to lift out.
You should've read/highlighted the Director Trait. Just bonkers.
Someone’s a fan of Bud’s RPG Review I see 😂
I was the first hand guy!
nice. if an rpg rule book has more than 2 pages of rules, its too many rules. i like this. i dont see how its like OSR tho
OSR playstyle and principles. Not OSR rules.
PbtA...
instantly sold out, wtf
Pronouns on the CS, pass! 🤦🏻
"Be a fan of the characters." is the most toxic idea to come out of Powered by the Apocalypse. The concept of fandom is inherently toxic so leaning into it is a terrible idea.
Like Strongbad once said: Every word gets worse if you add "fan" infront of it. Club. Art. Fiction...
That's a pretty absurd way of interpreting the advice...
Geez. Someone doesn’t like fans. Can’t you just mentally substitute the words, “person who likes” for the word “fan?”
Way to be a pretentious D-bag…
I don't know... they sound pretty cool if you talk through them... 🤖
"powered by the apocalypse" I'm out. No longer interested. Goodbye.
ok
Almost interested but then you let me know it's PbtA. Thanks, Ben. Now I know not to bother.
I don't really know what PbtA is as I mostly only run B/X but FIST has become one of my new favorite games. There are no rules in it that feel that different to the OSR systems I normally run if that means anything. I've even ran old-school D&D modules using FIST with minimum conversion.
Ehhh.... only the dice mechanic is PBTA. There are no playbooks or moves. Still might not be for you, but I wouldn't put it in the same boat as PBTA.
It actually plays much different than PBTA.
There is a great many PbtA games and sorting out which ones are worth bothering with is a chore.
I still like baseline Apocalypse World.
Careful my friend don't get canceled with that offensive content on screen ;)
