  • This simple tote features a secure recessed zip, a technique that can be used in many styles of bag. No pockets for this one but they can be added if you wish.
Instead of boxing the base this one has darts to give it shape.
I’ve used a linen/canvas outer fabric, [Mulberry Trees red] and Burgundy cotton lining, with H640 fusible fleece to stabilise.

Thankyou Debbie!! I have never seen a recessed zip opening done this way before. You make it look achievable! Thanks for your fabulous videos. I love watching them and learning new ways of doing things. Blessings from Sue in South Australia!

Hi Debbie, Great tutorial as always. Pleased with my bag. I did struggle with the tutorial for the zip as the fabric colour was a little dark. I will be having another go as I'm sure it will be easier having made it once. Thank you for all the lessons!

Wonderful little bag. Might I suggest using a lighter color zipper when demonstrating. Dark zipper against dark fabric made it very difficult to follow. It is a technique I would lover to master. Thank you for sharing .

Hello Karen. Zips are not easy are they 🥴 Debbie has many tutorials on fitting zips. I learned from one of her tutorials many years ago. Most of them are toiletry bags or makeup bags, but the concept is the same. She takes her time and has different camera angles. There is one very similar to this video Dated 31 dec 2013 called A Zippered, lined tote bag for you to sew by Debbie shore. It’s about 13 minutes in. Hope that helps. Paulette 🌺

Yes, I think a lighter fabric or zipper would be easier to see. Great bag tho’, have always wanted to master this technique. 👍

I might make my zip tabs longer and cut off the zip stopper, as my machine hates zip stoppers. I love this video, I have this fabric in great an cream x

I’d like to make this using faux leather for my daughter. Would I just use the same concept? Thank you for your videos! I’m really enjoying them.

Agree, great tutorial but couldn’t make out what was happening with the zip. Beautiful colour however.
