Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy's Sri Mudhraalaya celebrates 70th Birthday of Padmashree Chitra Visweswaran

- The popular Ananda Narthana Ganapathim has been performed by 70 students from the Sri Mudhraalaya Parivaar and celebrates the 70th birthday of their Grand Guru Padmashree Chitra Visweswaran. The presentation guided by Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy includes students who practice and learn dance either as a performer, teacher or researcher. There are also pre Arangetram and Arangetram students, mom-daughter duo's and little ones. What is common in them is their love for Chitra Akka and the wish to do something special inspite of the pandemic.

Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy
Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy is a Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher and a choreographer. Her Bharatanatyam dance institution Sri Mudhraalaya is now 25 years old. Lakshmi Ramaswamy is a US Fulbright Fellow (2000), a Senior Fellow at the Ministry of Culture (India), recipient of the Tamil Nadu State Award - Kalaimamani (2017) and a ‘Top’ graded artist of Doordarshan.
The 1st doctorate in Bharatanatyam from the department of music at the University of Madras, she serves in the same as a Guest Faculty and has conducted many Indian Classical dance workshops and lectures in Chennai, Kolkata, USA and Canada.
She has written Bharatanatyam course books for Annamalai and Alagappa University & course material for Prayathnam as well. She is a consultant for Alagappa University and is invited to play the role of an examiner by several-dance institutions and regional selection committees.
Bharatanatyam dancer, Lakshmi Ramaswamy has also authored Bharatanatyam books for dance students, researchers and art readers.
Sri Mudhraalaya:
Started in the year 1994, Sri Mudhraalaya is a registered society with satellite institutions headed by her students, in different parts of Chennai. The institution offers group and individual classes that aims at: holistic training in practical dancing, theory and exercises, nattuvangam, costume design and makeup, backstage management, stage presentation, production assistance, lighting, choreography and teachers training.
Padmashree Chitra Visweswaran:
Eminent dancer-teacher- choreographer, Chitra Visweswaran, a legend in the field
of Indian dance, has the distinction of being a scholar, thinker & seeker. Deep rooted training in dance under Smt T.A.Rajalakshmi & the doyen Vazhuvoor Sri B Ramiah Pillai an eclectic background & inner thirst for knowledge launched her on a voyage of discovery at a young age. Her research directed towards the extension of the existing Bharatanatyam repertoire has led to the creation of a voluminous body of work, covering the margam, thematic solo, group /dance theatre productions, which reflect individuality and are a synergy of tradition & innovation. Her work has been enriched by the music of her vocalist- musician - composer husband, Visweswaran, who incidentally, was the nephew of the Carnatic Legend G N Balasubramaniam. Her holistic vision of dance and her husband musician-composer R Visweswaran’s vision of music is ensured a continuum through Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts, established by the couple at Chennai in 1975.

Also to think that my dear friend Chitra Visveswaran has successfully completed 70 yrs .i recollect the day I was introduced to her by her great Guru shri Ramesh Pillai when I had gone with my parents to pay our respects to him.Then on we had a mutual apprciation and love for each other .i wish Chitra all the best and many more years in the service of the great art.
