For Gitzo you can unlock all rings in one grab too and you don’t need much turns, just a half would unlock all sections smoothly. Probably because this is a paid endorsement of this tripod. There are several bigger photogs pimping this right now including Samuel Elkins and Burkard on Instagram just today as a matter of fact.
Peak Design is so thoughtful in their design, every Peak product I have I love. I saw another YTer talking this product up and was impressed. You solidified my thoughts and really like when you point out what you like and don't like and compare. The ball head is miles ahead of anyone, not just the competition. Tripod design reminds me of the Sachtler Flowtech 75 MS Carbon Fiber Tripod. Both designs are groundbreaking.
Oh goodie! Was reading the kickstarter campaign when a Peter McKinnon notification pops up and answers ton of questions! Really big PD supporter, what to do with my Gitzo Traveller! 😀
The head on this tripod reminds me of the Gitzo GH531SQD head. It also sits down into the tripod apex and has a single rotating ring for lock/unlock. In addition, it also has a friction adjustment so that the full "unlocked" position of the ring still has your desired amount of friction. Nice, but expensive.
To be fair, the head is NOT going to be level when collapsed unless you have levelled the feet or have a perfectly level surface. You're over-selling it a bit my man.
yep and while we are talking about overselling, rotary clamps can also be loosened all at the same time so the comparison on assembly time was rather misleading. I do prefer lever clamps but I don't find much difference in assembly time between my manfrotto tripods and my 3-legged thing one.
Exactly; I shoot mainly landscape and rarely set up on level ground, so for me I'd still be leveling everything with the PD. Also, I have a Gitzo Traveler and a cheaper knockoff backup, I never untwist one section of a leg at a time, I untwist all sections of a leg at once easily. I'm also concerned about vibration from wind with the PD's thin center column, and its holding strength as at 7:18+ when he moves the tripod with his bag on the hook you see it slip down twice. Hopefully that's only because he didn't fully secure it or something that gets addressed before full production. All that being said, there's a lot to like with this tripod and I plan on at least checking it out as mine has endured a lot of abuse over the years and I'm looking to replace it soon.
Would like to see stability testing, how long of a shutter it can handle in the wind, and if it is sturdy enough that you can change camera settings without moving it, useful when making adjustments mid time lapse etc
Been planing on getting a new tripod. Was thinking of investing in a manfroto tripod recently but I’m glad you uploaded this because I’m now definitely investing in peakdesign (again 👀, great products) because this product is amazing
A Gitzo tripod you can unlock all three locks at the same time. I’ve seen the Peak Design tripod at the Photo Plus expo. With four lever locks per legs, setting it up will just as fast as setting up any twist lock tripods with three locks. Even if it’s faster, we’re talking about a couple of seconds faster tops. The downside of the Peak Design tripod with the built-in ball head is that it must be raised a little bit in order for it to be used properly. I like how all Peak Design tripod review videos, people often open other tripods like it’s the first time they’ve seen a tripod before ... open one lock at a time, twist in the wrong direction, leaving one lock partially unlock and having the tripod collapse under pressure, etc. I have to say though, the Peak Design tripod is one of the best looking tripod out there.
Wait who's helping you make these again?! Who's making you laugh?! Can I be hired just to make you laugh and not make this easy on you?! haha such good bloopers! Thanks for the video Pete! Might consider backing this product!
Best video I’ve seen all morning. Even though I’ve only watched one video, (I’m kidding) this is a very positive video, and that is an amazing travel tripod and I would love to get one a use it daily. Very nice video!!! Keep it up and good luck on the new office/warehouse space.
If you were a professional, you'd know 500 for a carbon fibre tripod is about right. Take a look at Gitzo, or really right stuff, and you'll see why. Now there are second-rate, abliet decent tripod manufacturers like Benro, Induro, Sirui but they honestly don't hold water when compared to Gitzo or RRS.
I like the centre column design on the sirui tripods, a lot quicker to remove just the centre column instead of removing the ballhead and camera with it and then placing the ball head back onto the tripod
I have a few Peak Designs products, solid kit. Regarding the Allan key plate: it's not as big a deal as you think. It's a standard Arca-Swiss type plate, useable with their Capture products and others. I've never removed that plate from my camera since getting it.
This thing is getting tons of hate on the various forums and comment sections, but I think it’s rad. I’m in on the Kickstarter and can’t wait to get mine! I’d say it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for, but it goes way beyond that with features I never would have thought up. Well done, PD!
Spot on. This in essence is a tripod made for Smartphone generation. I am saying this with absolute authority after having fiddled with it in person. Beautiful design, yes, but productivity wise it is a complete ZERO
Just got to the point where you take a long time to setup the Gitzo tripod and already seeing a flaw in your workflow. Unless I’m missing something. I’ve got a Sirui tripod that’s pretty similar. Need to twist to unlock the legs but I can actually unlock all the sections of 1 leg in 1 go instead of going to each individual twist lock. Securing them tight again is the only bit that needs to be done per section. Same with the PD one it seems, only it’s clamps instead of twist locks.
I'll get this for sure, looks awesome! I'm already a big fan of the capture clip. Last year I was wearing my camera on the clip while riding my motorcycle and crashed. I expected my camera to go flying... It didn't move at all, they got some awesome quality stuff.
Peter McKinnon has been the biggest inspiration to me creatively and inspired me to make my own channel! New vid dropping tomorrow and I would love some feedback from you all! Also honestly a dope tripod!
Don Jason literally amazed...even if just these two people check out my stuff like it’s 130am you people are incredible Never expected anyone to see this comment lol
I'm trying to redo my gear and minimize it to be more travel friendly. As in drones, cases and gear like this would love to see a new vid this year on all the new products and how to really maximize your gear in minimizing it.
I love Peak Design products. The utility is built into everything. You can tell it’s a company founded by an engineer who was also a photographer. Well. Thought. Out!
I’m pretty sure you can reinstall the whole ball head and center column together upside down when in super low mode. Then you can shoot through two legs. No need to uninstall the ball head from the center column. My tripod does this.
For travel size support I use the Manfrotto Befree Live tripod that comes with a video fluid head that can be leveled on a ball. The plate is the same width standard as used with other popular Manfrotto video heads like the 504HD, which is important for my workflow. It works perfectly for my purposes, and only costs $240. And for still photography or fixed angle video I use the Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminum Tripod. Its head is easy to use and very quick to set up, and the whole thing is only $65. So you could have both of these great tripods for less money than the cheaper version of this PD tripod that doesn't even have a video head. The design is very slick and functional though, that's very true. I'm all set and happy with my gear though, but this is good to know.

This design (except the center column adjust) seems like it wouldn't be too bad to use with gloves on. Also a bonus.
surprised there is no fluid head pan handle for smooth pans??
Really liked the bloom in the background from the windows, makes it look like a cinematic lens flare ;)
No need for Allen key! replace the existing plate screw with an $11 D-ring screw. (Nice tip from Tony Northrup).
Best video I’ve seen all morning. Even though I’ve only watched one video, (I’m kidding) this is a very positive video, and that is an amazing travel tripod and I would love to get one a use it daily. Very nice video!!! Keep it up and good luck on the new office/warehouse space.
Great vid thx. BUT because of the price and the quality I would never recomend this tripod to a professional or amateur
"That's what she said" I'm your fan for life now.
You got my attention with the LOTR intro! Thanks for making this videos!
Me: This would be perfect for my youtube.
Bank account: Yeah how about no...
Great review Mr. M, love the hidden phone attachment.
I have a few Peak Designs products, solid kit. Regarding the Allan key plate: it's not as big a deal as you think. It's a standard Arca-Swiss type plate, useable with their Capture products and others. I've never removed that plate from my camera since getting it.
What backpack you used to showcase the bottle holder ?
That‘s a douchebag backpack ;)
They have really great bags :)
raffi1693 that’s a really bold name for a company 😂😂
This thing is getting tons of hate on the various forums and comment sections, but I think it’s rad. I’m in on the Kickstarter and can’t wait to get mine! I’d say it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for, but it goes way beyond that with features I never would have thought up. Well done, PD!
Shouldn't the most important aspect of a tripod be stability?Didn't see that covered.Looks awful spindly to me.
Spot on. This in essence is a tripod made for Smartphone generation. I am saying this with absolute authority after having fiddled with it in person. Beautiful design, yes, but productivity wise it is a complete ZERO
Thats so obvious that i didnt feel the need of talking about it
@@SailingLaVagabonde Not in a travel tripod? Are you nuts?
All triods are stable
Umm pete. The peak design carbon fibre tripod is almost 1k cdn. It’s awesome sure. But I rather get a 3 legged thing tbh
What backpack was that? I like it! Someone answer my question please
I'm in for the answer. :)
its the traveler backpack from DoucheBags. just google douchebag travel bags
Brevite
ive been waiting so long for this upload ive been checking for the pass 5 days to see if you have uploaded
Seriously, Peter Mckinnon, you looked like a tripod newbie using the Gitzo. That's not how you extend a Gitzo.
How you think a consumer would treat the tripod
How do you extend a Gitzo?
he had to justify the money he must supposedly have gotten paid to pimp this tripod.
I'll get this for sure, looks awesome!
I'm already a big fan of the capture clip. Last year I was wearing my camera on the clip while riding my motorcycle and crashed. I expected my camera to go flying... It didn't move at all, they got some awesome quality stuff.
Some company is probably going to make a compatible plate with a lever or screw.
Hopefully...
watching this gain. im just in love with this tripod. perfection
Peter McKinnon has been the biggest inspiration to me creatively and inspired me to make my own channel! New vid dropping tomorrow and I would love some feedback from you all! Also honestly a dope tripod!
Jarod Lovekamp 4sure will check it out! Peter is the man
Jarod Lovekamp can’t wait to see how your creativity flows!
Wesley Williams DUDE THANKS SO MUCH
Don Jason literally amazed...even if just these two people check out my stuff like it’s 130am you people are incredible
Never expected anyone to see this comment lol
I'm trying to redo my gear and minimize it to be more travel friendly. As in drones, cases and gear like this would love to see a new vid this year on all the new products and how to really maximize your gear in minimizing it.
lol Love the Lord Of The Rings reference. Ha Ha Ha That's what she said!!!!!! Tripod Rifle!!!
I love Peak Design products. The utility is built into everything. You can tell it’s a company founded by an engineer who was also a photographer. Well. Thought. Out!
6:54 ahahahahahaha
BTW : They totally forgot about the most use of a tripod : PANORAMIC SHOT !
I'm glad someone else has spotted this flaw in what looks like and interesting design.
@peter mckinnon can you made this feed back to them ?
They have an adapter to fit 3rd party ball heads and plan to make their own panning heads in the future.
@@fuckthisbs How do you know that ?
I love the bloopers and BTS stuff at the end 👏🏼
Video release embargo timed exactly at the same time as I got the email from Peak Design about their travel tripod... love Peak Design!!!
That rewind sequence was so so so so Funny 😂😂😂🙌🙌
“Do I enjoy using this?”
Pete as Marie Kondo in camera world.
I’m pretty sure you can reinstall the whole ball head and center column together upside down when in super low mode. Then you can shoot through two legs. No need to uninstall the ball head from the center column. My tripod does this.
Pete: Feel ashamed using a Gitzo tripod
Me: Can’t even afford a tripod
