Have you forgotten we are not a 3rd world country so poverty looks a little different here? People have cars but often they set because no money for repairs or tires. Or all their money goes to making that payment so they can get back and forth to their low paying jobs, or that's all that remains because their home is falling down around them. I'm guessing that many people in the comments section are not actually Texans as gas is fairly stable and in many areas lower than $1.50. And maybe they don't know the full story of this particular give, so please don't stop giving. This particular food bank helps a lot of people throughout the year. I've had the joy of volunteering for it. This pandemic may have brought anyone and everyone but I assure this place gives to the real needy regularly. In regards to this pandemic time, I've seen many people in all types of neighborhoods that need help with food as the costs are ridiculously increasing. Yes, that includes some people who you would think are well off. For some reason people think that everyone is automatically similar to others. Sorry, not everyone has a job or does well with money. Unfortunately, that's not how life works. Yes, there are nice cars, but their home may be run down or they may be living in that nice car. Some may own businesses, but using their own money for their employees' salaries. Some may "look" the rich part, but make bad decisions when it comes to money. I'm glad people are giving and I hope that those that need it most will get it. For those that are taking advantage, well I hope the karma is worth it.

I was shocked at the volume of food they were giving out. Our Thanksgiving food distribution consisted of: a moldy butternut squash, a turkey, a 10lb bag of frozen chicken thighs, a package of tomatoes, a bag of apples, a bag of (yellow) oranges, 4 individual milks and a box of processed cheese product. I volunteered and felt awful, people were showing up expecting to be able to put together some kind of Thanksgiving dinner from what they got at that distribution. Some of that food wasn't even edible. They deserved better. It's obvious a lot of people have never been in a situation where things have taken a drastic turn in their lives and they are choosing between paying their bills or putting food on the table. A lesson in humility would go a long way.

When one family member loses a job or a business closes - the financial strain is harder on a family. Many middle class people now pay their housing and transportation while having little to nothing after for essentials like food. They did not get nice cars and homes expecting for a year long pandemic to hit. This shows that so many are struggling now, not just people in extreme poverty. A mother with children and an elder at home who hasn’t been able to return to work full time due to city guidelines could worried about how she and her family will eat. I know a guy who lost hist $80k/yr job. Now he works 3 jobs working for basically minimum wage. Still has a huge house, 2 cars, a wife that has a nervous breakdown because he lost his high paying job and can't work. He also has to pay for his daughter's expensive college education. Dude too embarrassed to down size. He is going to die of over exhaustion. He basically working 18 hours a day, seven days a week.

These people are not being lightly screened. We've this whole image of starving people in long lines at a near historical level. Did you notice how nice some of those cars and trucks are? IDK, that seems judgmental without knowing their specific situation. Some people have had their jobs affected for more than six months and may have just come out of a different circumstance. You need reliable transportation. Is that the case for everyone? Probably not but I don’t see any buses or trains access to that area.
