This game was on the day I was born, my parents made my middle name Austin while the game was playing because they bet the longhorns were going to win, and then win the national championship.
That combination of Brent Musberger and Gary Danielson calling games together is what made old ABC college football so special. I remember watching this game back in '05 and it was amazing.
Won't ever forget watching this game. This game set the stage for our championship run. These are the teams that Texas should be producing year in and year out.
Thank you for the upload! I was at this game. 12 years old. Texas fans are so friendly. I will never forget Ryan Hambys drop and Justin Zwick starting instead of the future Heisman Troy Smith. Was a great game! Glad we got revenge the year after vs Colt McCoy. Texas then went on to upset unbeatable USC. National Champions. Go Bucks!
Hopefully the 4 team championship playoff will encourage more top teams to schedule games like this. Whats the fun in every regular season game meaning something if most out of conference games are against cupcake/big payday opponents.
+TF267 True and also there wasn't this "Uniform craze" where teams wear clown suits and ruin their classic looks. UCLA sadly has a beautiful uniform, but sometimes comes out in other stuff that makes you shake your head. The good old days these were.
As a Buckeye fan I still think this was one of the best college football games ever played, also as a Buckeye fan I believe if Troy hadn't did what he did prior to the 2004 Alamo Bowl we would have won this game.
Ohio state needs more non conference games like this. Should have easily won this game. I remember watching this game, being a buckeye fan, should have scored touchdowns but it was a great game.
Troy should have started the whole game I remember watching this and when he was in the game the offense moved so much better. He was Ohio States real QB but he got in some trouble and Tressel had to discipline him by not letting him start or play the whole game. I was so upset when he had to come out because you could clearly see the difference in how the game was going when he was on the field. I feel that Ohio State could have beat them if Troy was in for the whole game. If you think this is no big deal well ask yourself this question...how good do you think Texas would have been in this game if every other series Vince young had to come out and alternate with a back up QB? We were soooo upset but we realize that Tressel had to be tough on Troy and teach him a lesson. Tressel was true to his word he said he didn't care how big the game was he was still going to discipline Smith and that's exactly what he did and it may have cost us this game.
***** Texas was the better team BY FAR ? .... obviously you didn't see this game. This game was just as close as the longhorns title game against USC. You surely did not watch this game from beginning to end. Both of these teams were very good and evenly matched. Vince Young said that playing Ohio State in that environment was one of the toughest games of his college career. Nobody is making excuses Texas won the title that year and they deserved it Vince Young was a monster in college but pleeeeze don't act like they were FAR BETTER than Ohio State.
***** well if I recall late in the season USC played Notre Dame and barely won then they played Texas. Ohio State went on to play Notre Dame in a bowl game and man handled them. The score doesn't show how much better the buckeyes looked than Notre Dame. I watched that game and it was a clear difference in both teams. I can even remember the broadcaster saying that Notre Dame was taking a good old fashion Ohio State but whipping. Me and my friend kept saying that Ohio State probably should have been that title game instead of USC because they easily beat a team that USC struggled with. so when you say it would have been a lopsided victory if they played later in the season I don't agree The buckeyes got better just like Texas.
I still feel this was a better and certainly more talented team team than 06 and for sure 07. Those teams got thumped by the SEC in the title games. This team had the same players it had in 06 and 5 players who would go in the first round of the draft that next year. To lose two games by a combined 10 points to the number one team in the country Texas and to Penn state who finished number three in the final polls was hard. This might have been Tressel most talented team.
Everybody here who keeps referring to the 2006 Ohio State @ Texas matchup fails to point out that Longhorns starting QB in that game was a true freshmen name Colt McCoy. Therefore you can't compare 2005 v. 2006. Ironically Colt would get his rematch v. Ohio State 4 years later in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl where he led the game winning TD drive. WR Quan Cosby was freshmen in 2005 matchup & as a senior in 2008 caught the game winning TD pass from Colt to beat the Buckeyes in Fiesta Bowl .
Very true, but Troy was no stud at the time of the 05' game either. But that 08' was a great game! OSU's senior class had a lot to play for that year as well, having been a part of two losing NC teams in the years prior. It all culminated in a classic that went down to the wire! Think we get our chance to play again in the near future, Go Bucks!
I think Troy Smith looked promising through 2006 season until his atrocious performance vs. Florida in BCS NC game. It exposed the fact Buckeyes overall 2006 schedule was mediocre. This was very evident when 2nd best team in Big Ten Michigan was also blown out by USC in 2007 Rose Bowl game. 2006 Ohio State - Michigan was hyped as the game that year in college football. I was skeptical about the Big Ten conference & bowl games in 2006 proved it was mostly rivalry hype.
P Evans True, the same could be said about Alabama-Auburn or Ole Miss- Miss. St. this year. All 4 of those teams were in the top 5 at one point this year and all got beat down in their bowl games. Rivalries tend to place more emphasis on games and make teams maybe look better than they are. OSU was a good team 06 but they weren't ready for Florida. USC was really, really good 07' and should have been in the title game that year but they lost a cupcake game and OSU got in even though they lost a cupcake to Illinois late in the year. Shouldn't have been there but we were and got handed again, although it was closer than Florida game thank god lol. B1G is on the rise though with Wisky and Mich. St. looking good for the future and Penn State coming off probation. Urban at OSU and Harbaugh at Michigan. College football better look out
TCU should have been in 2014 CFP but was screwed like 2011 Oklahoma State Cowboys not being able play LSU due to SEC overhype. Trevone Boykin is the most dangerous dual threat QB in college football. Unfortunately, if OU had same season record this year they would have been in 4 team playoff. I remember in 2008 Texas being screwed over playing for NC because BCS wanted OU playing Florida instead...smh.
I think the loss fueled Ohio State to go down to austin and end the longhorns home win streak that at the time was in '03 to Arkansas & last loss in '04 to Oklahoma. S/N i still wonder how the '06 Texas/Ohio St. game would've played out if Vince Young was the QB instead of freshmen Colt McCoy but McCoy got his revenge against Ohio St. at the '09 Fiesta Bowl
+Edward Richardson Texas would have repeated the next year if VY had returned. The top teams in 2006 were fairly weak overall, and Texas returned a lot of talent besides VY. Hell, they were 9-1 and ranked #4 with a freshman QB until he got injured late in the year.
Smith already was punished for what he did. Beyond stuiped coaching to play the other quarterback at all in the second half. Cost all those senior's a national championship apprentice. Unreal on ohio st part. They wouldn't of beat USC that was all Vince Young but my god could have.
Man. #2 Texas vs #4 Ohio State. Clash of titans at the shoe, in prime time. Is it just me or did football just seem to be better back then?
Agreed, now it seems like powerhouse schools are scheduling FCS teams, MAC or other smaller schools, and less ranked teams in the non-conference

Good old days for us Texas fans
Great game... The 2006 game would've been just as good IF Vince Young remained at Texas he could've went back-to-back.
auburn fan here....they would've gone back to back. Texas lost 3 games(two by less than a touchdown).
Ahhh the good ole days of college football. ABC Sports ruled.
Good ole days indeed
Max Jefferson It's a lot better then ABC/ESPN being combined.
Allen Greene Can't argue with that. I grew up on ABC Sports.
Max Jefferson The bias towards the SEC from ESPN can tune you out majorly. with ABC there was no Bias.

I wish Ohio State and Texas would play every year. Thornsx2 ftw.
Brandyn Henry i agree cause i live in austin tx, but i am a die hard buckeye!

Did Brent have a stroke...he called the shoe the big house.
His HAIR was mussed!

LMAO did he say an electric feeling down here on the floor of the Big house? oh wow....
i'm glad i'm not the only one who heard that stupid musberger
Cannot believe how close OSU was to winning this game...if only #80 would have not bobbled that Zwick pass. Gotta love college football!
+Gaucho97 There were a lot of "what if" plays that Texas fans can point to as well.
I still feel this was a better and certainly more talented team team than 06 and for sure 07. Those teams got thumped by the SEC in the title games. This was the best team put together ever no team could beat 05 texas and if mack brown could clone this team lol he would still be coaching
@Grady Whitman 2nd best lol but that 09 defense was the best ever at 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Did I just hear Brent Musburger refer to Ohio Stadium as "The Big House"? Huh?
Man.. I don’t know why we even entertained starting Justin Zwick over Troy Smith. Yeah he was an upper classman and all, but comeon Tres.
Both of these teams were so loaded. Santonio Holmes, Jamaal Charles? wtf
Tressel puts in Zwick on that last drive. SMH

SEC West got exposed this year.

Barbie Carpenter.
man, osu shoulda won by double digits. texas dodged a lot of bullets
+Sean Swerdan LOL. Texas fans can point to just as many bullets that tOSU dodged. Funny how the loser only considers the "what ifs" on his side.

Ugh, camby makes either one of those catches on that same play and OSU wins this and plays for the title
+Nick Gerdes and beat USC?
Jim Trussell RIP lol
Tressel. And dont worry. Buckeyes are now the winningest program in College Football history
