From all the way across the Atlantic, I salute you Mhairi Black! Do not ever forget where you came from. Do not ever forget who you serve. While some of your elders have forgotten these things, you stand as a champion of the people. Use your power accordingly, and never allow it to corrupt you. :)

You're so wrong. The reason the Tories were voted in again was because Labour was not seen as a credible alternative. If the union does break up, it will due to in no small part to this existing Tory government.
The Tories have no interest in Scotland, yet the UK has a Tory government. Don't complain about the SNP in Westminster. They have a right to be there.

Even if all of Scotland voted labour it would still be conservative, we can't be responsible for the amount of scared, misled sheeple down there who voted conservative. As you know the SNP won nearly all seats... Does that not show how different our countries interests are?

Pleased to see so many positive comments from so many English people. You need to know, understand and educate so many of your fellow countrymen who think that we hate you - we absolutely do not, as I'm sure most of you reading this will realise.
Most of us have friends and family who are English, or friends or family who live in England. We don't wish any badness to befall you. We support pretty much all of your athletes competing internationally, apart of course from your football teams, we'd support Iraq playing against them.
I've lived in England for a year or so, and worked in and out of England from Scotland about 50% of my working life. I've never had any problems there at all really, always found people to be professional and friendly. My son lived in England for years too, in York. I think he really liked the place. I found it pretty charming too, despite facing legal execution by bow & arrow.
Mhairi Black's maiden speech was absolutely sensational. Words spoken with passion for the well-being and representation for so many people whose voices are utterly unheard and totally unrepresented and have been for decades.
Words for people who are now finally being sacrificed to death by starvation, by some right-wing policy sell off French quango murderers called ATOS, which isn't being entirely ignored by the Tory party. Ian Duncan Smith is currently refusing to bow to a 1/4 million signatory or so petition to release figures of how may have died directly after having their "Benefits" (such as misnomer) sanctioned.
This is surely the greatest scandal in recent British history? Is it hundreds? Is it thousands? Of British citizens basically starved to death/suicide!?!? We need to know the body count. We need to know who made the key decisions. We need to prosecute them to the full extent of the law. We don't need this to take as long as Hillsborough has taken to come close to a righteous and just ending. That this isn't the number one story in all of the newspapers, on TV, and the lips of every politician, all of the time smacks of a very nasty conspiracy indeed.
Tony Blair stole the Labour Party and moved it centre-right and with catastrophic mismanagement, utterly destroyed the soul of the Labour Party, forever. As Tony Benn and Mhairi Black would put it "there are weather-cocks and signposts". Well Tony Blair was tumble-weed for the Labour Party. I think they need another total revolution, or better a new left-wing party to evolve to replace them and steal their (our) identity back.
About time we had some real left-wing politicians, speaking with passion, and ripping into the proto-fascist state that Britain is becoming. And better still, engineer a way for Scotland's Independence to happen.

MinceCFC I am English born but have lived in Scotland for 35 years. From my experience in Scotland the SNP do the most damage to Scots reputation regarding the English. A joke of a party that just blames Westminster for everything, Lies about Scotland's assets (Jimmy Krankie Sturgeon overestimated Scotlands Oil revenue by as much as £34 Billion pounds over 20 years. Thats £68000 per head of population . £3,400 per year. And she wants fiscal control of the Scottish economy! Are you kidding!
I've nothing against this young girl. But I wouldn't trust the SNP to run a church fete, Let alone a country. A party of Liars, Bigots, Hypocrites. I despair that this shower could probably eventually win independance. If the Scottish people don't wake up and realise that a vote for the SNP is NOT a vote for Scotland. Unless your vision for Scotland is a highly taxed independant minnow country with no clout, nothing to bargain with and a leader who seems to have no clue about how an economy works
I blame labour for being a shower of shit as well. That's how this has happened. No way Scotland would vote Tory. So the nationalists got all the votes from the void. So looks like we're stuck with the Tories in power, The only thing worse is SNP running Scotland

    • @MinceCFC
      @MinceCFC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Philippe Coutinho Name me a political party in the UK that aren't liars, bigots or hypocrites? It doesn't matter to me who wins Independence for Scotland, just that it is won and we break free from Westminster, which is the biggest monster in the history of the entire world. They've ruled over the invasion of 90% of nations on this earth and killed tens of millions of people, now they are killing their own.

Philippe Coutinho Yes, seriously. The British Empire make the Nazis look like hippies. They've invaded 9 out of every 10 countries on earth.
And 'killing their own' refers to both British soldiers and more importantly, to those sentenced to starve to death by "Benefit" Sanctions, who number in the thousands.

I just hope that she sticks to the principles expressed in her speech, and is not corrupted by the cess pit that is Westminster. How would you sort out our deficit? Incase you dont know, that means that our country is spending more every year that we collect. Its unsustainable and something has to be done or we go bankrupt. So, what is the great socialist plan you believe in that will save us?? Spend and borrow? Take from the driven and give to the lazy?? Or do we stand up to the lazy and say "no, in this country you earn your way and everyone has a use"

    • @Sheechiibii
      @Sheechiibii 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

smcg i wouldn't take from people who need help, who have worked and paid taxes their whole lives and deserve help when they need it. I hope you never become disabled or are unable to find work, because then you'll be one of the 'lazy' people who are starving to death thanks to the tories. How would i sort out the deficit? I'd start by giving less money to people who won't die without it. Taxes are meant to go towards helping society, not lining the pockets of tories and their banker friends.

An outstanding speech and so nice to see Michael Meacher sitting on the back benches listening too. I agree that all parties who do not agree with the Tory govt.'s dismantling of the welfare state, need to come together in opposition but am increasingly worried that Nicola Sturgeon is criticising Jeremy Corbyn and the new direction he is taking Labour, rather then giving him her support. She is clearly threatened by him and is taking a divisive path. Mhairi, how do you reconcile your view that we need to come together to oppose Tory hegemony with your Leader's very different stance?

While I have no time for the politics of the SNP, that was an impassioned and thought-provoking speech. There are things that the tories are not addressing, and I am not a fan of their extreme neo-liberal economics. However, I don't think the economics of Corbyn or the SNP will work out in the long run. I take my hat off to the young lass, and agree with much of what she had to say, but nonetheless am sceptical of far-left politics, be it social or economics. Although this one may go far, with more speeches of this heart. Have to say though, she praised Tony Benn, and indeed he was a man of principle. Shame that both the modern labour party *and* the SNP don't stand with him on the EU.

This speech goes viral and captures the mood among many in not just these islands but further afield. Causes a sensation that such a young MP should have such eloquence, grace and articulation.
The BBC correspondent writes a short 3 paragrpah article about it. The headline of the article mentions the round of applause she got after her speach, the first paragraph of the article does too. Short middle paragraph about what she said. Final paragraph mentions the applause and the reprimand from the speaker.
For an embedded BBC journalist as much a part of the establishment as the Tory MP's and a good portion of the Labour MP's, the main story here was that boy's club rules were broken. So out of touch are the journalists to really understand what the story was here. www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-33529390

I was directed to this and just watched it.
I cant believe this woman is only 20 and I am pretty impressed.I can see her having an excellent career in politics.
It is not important to me whether I agree with her views or not right now but to see someone from her background and to what she has achieved already is refreshing to see.
A politician that she is will be a real handful in parliament over the years and I wish her luck and I think she will serve the people that voted for her very well indeed and that is a rare thing from politicians nowadays.

Top fucking quality speech! I so wished the SNP would expand to an all UK party. I know they focus on Scotland, but they could make the rUK a more just a fair society for all. Labour are just so out of touch. Corbyn has got to win for it to actually be good opposition to the nasty party.

What an incredibly eloquent speaker she is. This is a woman who has spent her life speaking to real people with genuine conviction about her beliefs. Such a stark contrast to the sheltered lives of genuine career politicians. Cameron could learn some things from her on how to deliver a speech and probably debate too. Alas, when the crap you spout has no heart behind it, you'll sound like the empty suit you are.

We are moving backwards - to a Dickensian Britain with no social safety net.
Child benefit is gradually being whittled away as well ... so, very soon young kids will have to go out and find work - maybe even scavenging on landfill sites like they do in 3rd world countries with no welfare provision.
Socialism is merely a word that describes a concept that will always be right for groups of human beings to adopt to protect each other. It's just a case of how you apply it.
Don't believe me? - when was the last time you refused milk for your newborn baby because they 'were not seeking employment'? Within the family unit we would never dream of essentially starving our own kids to death (I hope). Socialism extends these family values to the whole of society - it's very simple; and unavoidable.
We are just not designed by nature to be completely heartless to other peoples' suffering - that's why we take care of our family, and help others in need instinctively. It's why we have socialism at all; because there was a time when we didn't, and we couldn't bear the suffering and injustice that was going on.
The "outmoded" and "outdated" parts are merely in the methods of application - the concept remains undiminished.
If you want to help the most poor people possible (and if you don't, you're playing a dangerous game - life can and will bite you firmly on the arse when you least expect it) - then there are several ways to do it, but the might of the state is much better at co-ordinating the massive operation of protecting the sick and the vulnerable than any number of small disparate charities existing on very variable levels of individual donors.
As for Reagan and Thatcher, they have returned in spirit - but Scotland is leading the way in making sure that their version of the "Hunger Games" (where 'society' is a brutal game of survival of the fittest and luckiest) is given no quarter.

This is exactly why we need people in their 20s in government.
They are mot afraid to speak their mind or fight fo causes they believe in as they havent been raised within the culture of westminster and the culture of British politics and why should they conform to a political climate whihc no-one of their generation, hell of their age bracket has done a thing to create.

Where does she think the money from all these 'benefits' come from. Maybe instead of going to parliament to suck up taxpayer dollars at age 20, she should have going into actual productive work in the private sector and thus paid some taxes instead of sucking them up.

  • @SRPC21

I know there's poverty in the UK but what Mhairi Black is saying is absolute bollocks; She honestly expects us to believe that a man stopped paying for his daily bus trips to go to the food bank because he was saving that money to get a bus to the job centre (which is once every two weeks), causing him to not eat or drink for five days? (Also why would this make him dehydrated? Did he not have running tap water?)
She also said that his pay was sanctioned for 13 weeks for being 15 minutes late. If this is true then it's against the law, not an injustice of our system; This is Highest level of sanction which can only happen for one of four reasons: 1) If he was dismissed for misconduct from his last job, 2) If he left his last job without good reason, 3) He didn't apply for suitable jobs his work coach or employment scheme adviser told him about, or 4) He didn't take a job that his work coach or employment scheme adviser told him about if he was offered it.
I admire people for sticking up for the poor and vulnerable but I hate it when politicians lie for a political advantage. It means genuine stories fall on deaf ears.
