Hey, I just spent $300 on a yearly membership course that I still don’t understand, I had to go to TH-cam and your video popped up. I honestly learned more from this video alone than that course and my music theory college course. I could never figure how to put what I was learning in a DAW everything was so out dated. You have made something click, I’m so happy to pay for your course know it’s what I been looking for along time! Thank you I’m so grateful!!!!
I love you, man!!! Your course is the only one that hooked me up till the end and made me understand everything. I hope there was more quality material on TH-cam like yours.
Tomas George Hey, i had a question that's been bothering me, like, how do I decide what scale my song should belong to and what exactly is the use of a scale? Is there some kind of a rule that one cannot use any notes outside of a scale In their chords or melody? Sorry for the long comment
Hey Abhay. There are rules for example which chords should go in each key and which scales fit within these chords, but of course, the rules can always be broken! I recommending sticking with the rules to start with though and then once you know the rules you are free to break them and experiment!
I've been making electronic music off and on for 15 years. I had always basically done guess and checking to make chords and melodies. Now knowing what I learned in this 50 min video, I can not only write good sounding ones faster but also inspire myself with new melodies just by following simple patterns. Will def be looking into purchasing the 8 hour version soon
I have already learned a fair amount of music theory, just watched this to see what you said differently and refresh. The part about 5+4, 4+5, 4+4, and 5+5 made chord building so simple. So thank you
An exceptional teacher, clear and concise, 50% through the course and it is officially the best self learning investment I’ve ever made, I’ve learned so much that up until now seemed like an insurmountable subject, thank you! For anyone wondering, it is completely DAW agnostic, I don’t use Ableton, the lessons are on music theory and Ableton is only used to present things from the piano roll 🎹 of a DAW which is 100% universal to all DAWs.
In lecture 7 on chord progressions, I remember the pattern easily just because it's drawn with the lines & triangles (38:23) in an ALMOST symmetrical way. Also, the "△ - - △" looks like a little person with triangle headphones on with their eyes closed, then it goes to "△ - ○ △," which looks like they open one eye. &the chord-melody editing in real time at the latter half of that same was magical
omg it was so easy (or at least you make it look easy), ive been struggling with scales since i started and never actually found a video that explains it the way you did, THANKS
Hi Mr George, I'm currently undergoing your course of ableton production on udemy and I stumbled upon this video on youtube whilst looking for music theory instructions, I have to say, so far you're one of the most patient instructors I've had the chance to come across with,I want to congratulate you and keep this up!
Amazing, dude. Thank you so much for this. Today I learned why there's minor (and diminished!} Chords in each key. This has been a seemingly arbitrary mystery to me for months. You're an awesome teacher, man. Thank you kindly for this.
One of the best tutorial on TH-cam. Thanks so much for everything. Everything was good until 43:10 I did not understand how those notes were picked up.
@Tomas George .. Brilliant Teaching Not an Easy Thing to depart Knowledge like the way you said .. recap recap on what your Teaching People as Many Students learn at different paces
Can anyone explain to me the part he taught about writing melodies ? Does he mean that technically we can use any key to create the melody ? sorry ain't very bright here and thanks for the help
Thank you so much for putting this together! It has helped me grasp what has been a frustration.. and now I can apply this knowledge to my own creations :) Do you use Ableton in the Complete Course version?
29:42 Hi Thomas, Great video thanks for the tutorial.. Just a quick question regarding the chord section, if you start with a minor chord instead of a major how does this change the theory?? is it a change in relation to TTTSTTTS & TSTTSTT ??
Thank you so much Thomas this is really helpful I've shared your page :) by the way will you do a fl studio version since you have both logic and ableton would be appreicated
Thank you for sharing my page and I'm glad you found this video useful. At the moment, I'm just creating Logic Pro and Ableton Live videos, but creating FL studio videos is something that I'm considering doing in the near future.
This is the best tutorial i hv ever seen on music theory.. i just want to know i live in india.. how can i buy your full course? n how i will get it???
Hi George, I have gone through your website, which i think is a brilliant one. I am very much intersted in creating music(Producing, composing). And i am not sure which course to begin with. I am gald that, you are helping people to LIVE UP THERE DREAMS!! Can you please recommend me, few courses to begin with and to become a pro. (Compatable laptop - macbook). I will be waiting fo your reply.. Thanks in advance.
Does this course apply to Kygo type music to. I know that his music is a little different than most EDM producers so would you need to know more advanced theory for writing music like that.
I would say yes it does apply. This course is about the theory of writing music in general on a Digital Audio Workstation. Kygo does, of course, have his own style, but all the theory still applies to anyone who wants to learn how music is formed through chords, harmony, and melody on a DAW. I hope this helps, Tomas.
David Jones it's about a sequence of chords (using fingers 1 + 3 + 5) in a scale. One usually plays chord with these fingers, having fingers 2 and 4 in the air. If you, for instance, go through all 8 keys in a C major scale, placing your thumb (1st finger) on each key: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C (C major is white keys only), what you get with fingers 3 and 5 is: C + E + G (is major, sounds happy, because in semitones it is 4+3) D + F + A (is minor, sounds sad, 3+4 semitones) etc. A + D + F is the only diminished chord in this scale (3+3). This one is not used much in pop music.
WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT COMPOSITION FOR ELECTRONIC MUSICIANS, THIS MUSIC THEORY I'VE ALREADY COVERED IN ANOTHER EPISODE OF YOURS! DO YOU CHARGE!
I'm only 15 minutes in, but why is this used. How would you make music without it? Is this stuff really in every day music we hear? If so, why doesn't it all sound similar?
Why is it 195 dollars OR 195 pounds. A pound is worth more than a dollar, so you are basically saying to everyone in Britain... 'screw you - you WILL pay more'.
Ok kid.. Not a bad video i guess for teaching the most simple way to make music. But saying that being able to read sheet music wouldnt help that much this day and age is a very unintelligible thing to say.. simply because if one does no how to read sheet music then chances are they know all about chords, scales, progression, octaves, harmony, and timing, as well as many other aspects of music that u did not cover in this video in regards to theory of music.. but i guess thats why the music today is not that clever or artistic.. its all commercialized and shit in my opinion.. basically im saying that if one were to stop with this video then they would be at a level beneath one that did know how to just read sheet music.. not even play.. just read...we have turned music into mcdonalds for the ears with these practices.. please make a more advanced video for your followers as to not dumb down the world..

First day in Ableton be sounding like 😂
I just write melody in this way
Is your Dad the mean food critic from Ratatouille?
Everything is clear until lecture 4. You start mentioning minors which hasn’t been explained yet.
watch on 1.25 speed. it's a lot less boring! edit: 1.5 is way better
He looks like @Wadzee
👌
I used to watch this at school and take sooooo many notes but now they blocked you...
this guy taught thousands of people around the "world" really??
Hi marshmellow
omg marshmalleow
Couldn't understand your portion on chords whatsoever :(
Whats the difference between the perfect fourths and fifths and then the 4 & 5 for major and minor chords?
Do you mean 4 & 5 semi tones? Because for perfect fourths and fifths it didn't seem as if you counted them in semi tones.
Why is it 195 dollars OR 195 pounds. A pound is worth more than a dollar, so you are basically saying to everyone in Britain... 'screw you - you WILL pay more'.
