  • PA State Game Commission's presentation on closing the Casparis Mines in Fayette County, PA. Outside of some bad artifacting, it should be enjoyable to anyone who is familiar with the tunnels above South Connellsville, PA.

My brother and I walked the entire inside perimeter of that mine when I was a kid. It is fairly large.

I used to be married to a Casparis.. exactly what branch of the Casparis family did this belong to or who discovered or started to mine here? Just curious.

Kenneth Casparis was the gentleman who started the mine.

How about all the old cars and junk that was pushed over the cliff near Casparis? I bet there are at least a few hundred old stolen cars that were pushed over that hill. Anyone ever been to Uppermans cave? It is near casparis on the road up from south cville? It is near the railroad tracks about half way up the dirt road. I havent been there in a long time.

I've heard there's another large sandstone mine in that areas near Casparis. Anyone know how close and how to get there?

While no longer accessible by vehicle/atv, the gates have been kindly vandalized such that one need only to duck down to enter the mine. Walked through the whole place 10/13/12.
Nice try game commission, nice try.

These so called experts shot ,blasted the rock in front of the mines that rock is acidic! Where limstone in the mines was alkaline as a result acidic water from rain water getting mixed with the sandrock that was blasted now leaks out down the mountain side ,this has killed the morel mushroom patch that florished there prior to to the game commission getting thier big noses into something they shouldn't!even the timber is dieing on the slope right below the blasted site all the way down to the truth tracks !People have dug holes back in the mines so just what did the game commission. Accomplish I'll tell you NOT one damned thing except ruining the morels and killing off hundreds of elm trees and pouplar hickory ,the cash are dieing but that's dew to the ash beetles I suppose !NOW we have a bad water discharge in the way of acidic run off where thier used to be an alkaline run off comming from the caves !I wish these assholes would mind thier own freaking buissness!Do gooders I call them always comming up with a solution to a problem that didn't exist ! A stainless steel gate would have done the same thing !maybe they would've busted through it but they busted through anyway!!!

@strum456 ATV's don't seem so harmless to me as many folk die on a regular basis riding them. I have ATV morons riding up & down my street and these same idiots ride the trails behind my house making LOTS of racket. Ban them!
