I am sure I clicked on Herkimer diamonds, but Howlite appeared. Interesting! To see the difference, the tongue test is the best and easiest. Magnesite is more chalky and sticks. A copper Penny has a 3.5 in Mohs scale, so it wil barely scratch a magnesite but a howlite will be very scratched and dented. And… do not confuse magnesite with magnetite. So similar names but so different in appearance. After seeing the raw form of howlite I immediately thought of a area i Greece that is full of those cauliflower like white stones.

Some jewelers in Poland sell cheap "corals" that look like red-dyed howlite. I'm not even sure if these "corals" are real howlites. I've seen "synthetic howlite" (probably plastic) cabochons and beads in many different colors.
