- Recovery after an otoplasty procedure is usually we place a little headband around the ears for the first week. So patients can wear it at night so that they don't roll over and flip their ears back after they've been operated upon. Most patients anticipate usually about two weeks of visible bruising and swelling on the ears themselves just because they've had surgery in that area. And the hardest part is just gettin' to sleep at night, because when we do both ears at the same time, it's just hard to be comfortable while you're sleeping. The ears tend to be real, kind of throbbing. But there's really not a whole lot of pain involved. It's just a throbbing sensation. And most patients take a few pain pills to kinda help 'em get to sleep the first few nights after the procedure, and that's usually about the end of it. This is an outpatient procedure done here in our ambulatory surgery center usually under local anesthesia.
