    Hi Alex, just some info I learned about the lane centering. If you have it on and you let go of the steering wheel, it will steer for about 20 seconds, then start flashing to keep your hands on the wheel. If you don't put your hands on the wheel, it will start blinking faster and begin to beep. It will beep faster and louder. At around 50 seconds, it shuts off the cruise control, and you have to grab the wheel. I have a 2022 Forester Premium. Thanks for the great videos. 😊

    Mr. Alex. I am always grateful for your help. I'm from Japan and have a Forester(SH&SK). When driving on the highway, I rely on EyeSight(SK) cruise control. Fatigue-free and comfortable to drive. I think the strong point is that you can freely change the distance between cars. Someday, I want to run on a highway in America 🇺🇸.

    I don't like the lane centering feature because if I keep a light touch on the steering wheel it tells me I don't have my hands on the wheel, so I have to give it a little tug every few seconds. I find it more relaxing to just steer myself on most roads. I love the adaptive cruise control, though.

    Greetings from Australia.
    Lane cantering is terrible on rural highways here. Ping-pongs you left and right constantly.
    And when you come to anything more than a gentle corner, it fights against you turning the wheel enough, and tries to send you over the centre lines. And then beeps angrily at you for going over the lines lol.
    On freeways (motorways) however, it’s wonderful.

    I have used cruise control religiously for as long as I've been driving. I love it. My 2022 OBP is the second car I've owned with adaptive cruise control and that's a whole other thing. I use it even more than I did before. It's interesting that the current year models increment the set speed up or down 5 mph when you press and hold the set/resume button. My car increments up and down 1 mph when holding the set/resume button. If I just touch it, it will increase/decrease by 5 mph. When I first got the car, I thought maybe that was backwards but it didn't take long, like about 5 miles, to get used to it. ;-)

    We just purchased a 2023 Subaru Outback Limiited but have not taken possession. We have been watching all of your videos and want to thank you for the excellent instructional videos on the Subaru models, which have helped us learn things about the vehicle that otherwise might have taken a long time. Regarding the adaptive cruise control, is there a method for cancelling the cruise control without tapping the brake pedal? We previsouly owned a Honda CR-V which had a cancel button on the steering wheel controls. I found this very useful when using the adaptive cruise control and wonder if the Subaru models have the same, i.e. perhaps holding one of the control buttons when engaged or double clicking, etc.? Many thanks.

    Thanks for this! We’re considering a used Subaru Legacy for our next vehicle and I was delighted to see this feature is available. I wanted to be able to test that feature when we go test drive the vehicle, and this video was so helpful and informative. Now I feel like I can get in the driver’s seat and know exactly what I’m doing.
    Quick question: the + and - “paddles” behind the steering wheel - do those also control the cruise, or are they for something else?

    • @alexpmo
      @alexpmo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Happy to help! The paddle shifters only control the transmission. You can use them to adjust your throttle response. Typically only necessary to use when you’re climbing a steep hill or stuck in snow.

    • @writermomo4
      @writermomo4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexpmo Nice! Those paddle shifters could be very helpful. The local freeway has super-short merge lanes at the end of several on ramps and being able to downshift to get more power quickly can mean the difference between merging safely and getting creamed by a semi-truck.

  • @mrhalfstep

    Hi, Alex. On my 2022 Outback the speed set button seems to work differently than you described. If I give the "set" button a "quick" bump up or down, it increases by 5 MPH. If I have the speed set at ,say, 47 MPH and do a quick bump up, the car speeds up to 50 MPH (3 MPH increase) to get to an even 5 MPH increment, then it's 5 MPH with each bump from there on. If I hold the up set button, then it just starts accelerating until I let off and it holds at whatever speed I'm at at that moment. It seems to be the reverse of what you say in the video.
    I'd also like to point out that the faster you are traveling, especially on curvy roads, the wonkier the lane centering feels, as it tries to "help" you. At 45-55 MPH the sytem does a terrific job of smoothly following even very curvy roads, if their lanes are marked well, but on the interstate I sometimes feel the lane centering is reacting too slowly and then abruptly catching up an feels "swervy" for lack of a better term.
    You didn't mention the green light projected on the windshield that indicates (along with the car icon above the steering column) that your car is locked onto the car in front of you. I rely on that light quite a bit when I set the cruise control. If you set it while going around a significant curve in the road the car in front of you will appear to the cameras to be left or right of you, depending on the direction of the curve. If that happens and you come out into a straight away with the car in front braking for a traffic sign or another driver, your car doesn't see it in time to brake. I guess the collision avoidance might stop you but the adaptive cruise won't slow you down. If you get the green light on the windshield, then you know it locked on and it didn't require taking your eyes off the road.
    Glad you're still making these videos. They were really helpful to this old man when he bought his first "hi-tech" car.

    Picking up my 2024 Forester Touring tomorrow. Just recently totaled my 2009 Forester (not my fault!).
    On the 2009 (and what I'm familiar with for other older non-adaptive cruise), there was a CANCEL button to take the car temporarily out of cruise control. A brake tap had a similar effect. And afterwards, a press of the RESUME button would re-engage cruise control and the car would "resume" its previous speed setting.
    Is there a similar CANCEL button/method for modern Forester and/or does a brake tap work similarly to CANCEL?
    So to speak... "I want to temporarily suspend adaptive cruise while I manually control things for a few minutes and then I just want to resume the adaptive cruise just as it was prior, without having to SET my speed and following distance, etc. again."
    I hope I was kinda clear. Greatly appreciating ALL your videos!

    Very few car reviewsers talk about this so thank you for sharing. With the adaptive cruise switched on I was told the display bars for follow distance is represented as seconds ie 1-4 seconds fron the car in front. Does this correlate to your experience?

    Hi Alex, I have some dirt and other debris stuck in between underneath the sunroof and above the manual cover tray on Subaru Forester 2022, there's any way I can get there and clean it? They usually fold electricly together when I open the sunroof so there's no reach over there... I guess it's got in there once I've opened the roof while the sunroof glass top was dirty and made it's way inside...

    I've had my 2019 Forester for a few years and have been too afraid to try the cruise control. (Currently 2024.) Don't laugh-- prior to this I drove a Honda for 20 years and NEVER even once touched the cruise control buttons. After watching your video, however, I now feel confident about giving it a try on an upcoming trip. Most other videos on the subject don't give enough detail about what buttons to push and what they do. Also, your advice of using Regualr Cruise Control is helpful. I wonder if there is a way I turn the system off quickly without fumbling with buttons? (maybe by stepping on the brake?) What happens if I step on the gas to temporarily speed up? Will I be able to over-ride the set speed limit and maybe even permit me to (re)set a new speed limit? I'm not crazy about taking my eyes off the road to look for up/down speed limit buttons.

    I went from a 2008 to a 2019 forester and no one warned me that the cruise control went up by 5’s instead of increasing by 1. I was probably going 59, wanting to speed up to 65. I freaked out when my car thought I wanted to go 85. I’m so thankful that my 2022 flipped that.

      I also wish we could change default mode (on startup) to be the mode we want. It defaults into sport mode. The only solution I can think of to your question would be to make individual mode the same as sport+ mode. That way, you can just push the star button on the steering wheel once to be in individual mode.

    Thanks Alex! I use adaptive cruise control all the time! It is particularly helpful in a line at a pickup window, once the line of cars straightens out. Curves are a problem, but the straightaway to the pickup window is a piece of cake! Also when on the interstate be careful following semi trucks…they slow down ever so gradually, and I have found myself suddenly realizing I was doing 10 mph below where I thought I set it!!! I’m glad I am back in a 2023 Forester Premium…the 2020 Touring was just way overkill with the beeps and buzzers! Plus the overuse of chrome is just too much especially on a Subaru!

    • @jpuffy

      Yes, lane departure warnings are on by default, and above about 35-40mph the lane centering will occasionally turn on automatically (if road conditions allow for it) but usually shuts off after a few seconds and is back to just departure warnings and mild departure assist. In my Subaru (23 Crosstrek) you can tell if it’s fully lane centering by the green steering wheel light and both lanes highlighted in blue around the car depicted on the dash.

      I always keep the Lane Departure Prevention function on with the warning buzzer off. The complaints about the constant beeping and buzzing of the earlier models is mostly gone on my ‘24 Impreza RS. The only beeping I get is an EyeSight “object detected” rarely when I come up on a bit close at a stop.

    I have a ‘22 Outback. I use the adaptive cruise control on every trip. My one question about it is in the rain - on numerous occasions, when I’m passing a semi that kicks up a lot of water on the windshield the cruise control turns off. I find this problematic because all of a sudden I’m slowing down in a near zero visibility situation and I fear the car behind me won’t see it because there are no brake lights. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?
    I asked my dealer after it happened the first time, but even after a follow-up call they never got back to me. I’m hoping you have an answer for me. Thank you. I love your videos.

    I have a 2020 Forester Touring and love adaptive cruise control. My only issue with it is that when it is engaged and I'm approaching a car that is stopped in front of me, it waits too long to start braking and scares me. Is the "start braking" distance adjustable? Of course I start manual braking from a comfortable distance, but that disengages adaptive cruise control and sometimes it takes multiple clicks of the switch when traffic starts moving to reengage. I'm concerned that I'm using the switch so much that I will wear it out.

    PS Since my first Forester that had Eyesight up to and including my current 2023 Forester Premium, I find the car brakes much later than I would, and it gets way too close to the car ahead before breaking than I am comfortable with. I always use the slowest (economical) setting for getting back up to speed in order to avoid whiplash!!! But all in all I would not be without Eyesight and adaptive cruise control, nor would I consider anything but a Subaru!
