    Grew up walking logging roads in Canada with an old Model 24 in the 80s.. It has the side selector which still seems solid.
    It also still has (I think) the original rear dovetail sight, which I think is getting loose. Not sure how to tighten it.
    The front sight is definitely newer as it was missing when I got the gun back from my folks last year (not their fault; nobody's used it but me) so I recently put a shotgun bead there. Probably going to file it but it's been working OK so far.
    Love this old gun. Got a lot of grouse and rabbit with it.

      Nice so see some of the side selectors like mine held the switch together. Definitely makes sense to treat it gently.

    I HAVE THE FLIP HAMMAR CHANGING FROM 22 MAGNUM TO 4/10. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE YOU DID NOT MENTION WAS THE PERFECT BALANCE & THE RIGHT ON SHOOTING THAT I FOUND IN SHOOTING MINE. I DON'T DOUGHT THE ANY SHOOTER WHO USED THIS SUPPERB RIFFLE WOULD FINF IT WAS BEST IN OVER ALL SHOOTING. MINE WILL NEVER BE FOR SALE, IT IS SURPERB ! I GOT ALOT FROM YOUR VIDEO, THANKS SO MUCH !

    might be that the .22 is often soft point. the laws of war get a little sketchy around soft point ammunition

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was The Hague Accords adopted during The Hague convention that outlawed “expanding” ammo.....mostly wrong info from war stories from what I have read and not really based on any real ballistics research. Hollow point ammo and lead unjacketed bullets were banned according to these rules but prolifically used by just about every police force out there right up to the present day.
      There ARE fully metal jacketed .22 loadings out there from back in the day that made OSS usage of certain .22 cal guns legal for use during wartime. This is also the reason Germany had a problem with shotguns.
      Funny, you cant agree on the other sides literal EXISTENCE so war is the result but there will be distinctions made on how lethal the killing is......we are certainly strange creatures.

    My father bought a 22/410 new for $14 in 1948. We decimated the jack rabbits in western Oklahoma until 1980 and the farm sold. It's still going strong.

    Thank you very much. This is an excellent video. Your curiosity and intellect made it informative and engaging. I am considering a newer model with the gap between the barrels. It’s in the .22WMR /20 gauge.

    I have a 24v series d d655762, how do I know when it was made?

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Savage introduced a date code in 1949 that consisted of one or two numbers and a letter in a 1/4" circle located between the trigger guard and the hinge pin. The letter is the date code; i.e. A=1949, B=1950, C=1951, D=1952, etc. This date code system continued in use until 1970.

    • @jwainer4397

      Try Numrich Gun Parts Corporation. I was just gifted a model 24 and I ordered a part I needed from them.

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check into it....might be better to get the selective hammer which replaced the frequently broken switch.....I think they designed the new part as a direct replacement.

    • @nathanwilson3182
      @nathanwilson3182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about that variation. I have the 24J-DL which is 22wmr over 20ga. The DL is the deluxe model with the engraving on the receiver. Mine has a 3" magnum chamber on the 20ga. I'm not sure it that was standard or unique to the DL.

    They made one with a lever in place of the button,

    • @hazcat640
      @hazcat640 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the side lever was the break open instead of a tang mounted. The button was problematic and was replaced by a hammer modification to select the barrel. The most popular models are the side lever lock and hammer selector type. BTW the gun was originally produced by Stevens even after it was purchased by Savage up until 1950 when it was dropped from the Stevens line and picked up by Savage.

    I know this sounds like nitpicking, but you referred to the lower barrel as a 410 gauge. As far as I know, there is no such thing as a 410 gauge shotgun.

    • @royreali8852
      @royreali8852 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Revolver Den They put the word bore after ".410". That is because there is no such thing as a 410 gauge.

    • @MilsurpGarage
      @MilsurpGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recently did a video on the Winchester Model 42 and I was VERY careful to call it .410 bore…….I don’t think I screwed up even once but you are definitely the guy to check up on me there! Check it out.
