It was in fact directed by Nazimova herself, Charles Bryant, her husband at the time, was credited as director only for appearance.

Heavy on the intertitles, thoroughly, spectacularly beautiful.....

I've always heard about Nazimova's "Salome" with it's costumes & sets done in the style of Aubrey Beardsley's famous drawings/ilustrations. This is truly a highlight of silent cinema. It is also an experience I find hard to equal ! RMH/Ohio

Nazimova did a great job here, The fact that she was a 42 yrs old woman playing the role of a 14 yrs old girl wasn't entirely a problem bc she looks like girls I mean that this particular fact is not a reason to say that the movie is a failure, besides she directed it herself and paid herself it was her own movie but MGM did not get good critkcsfeom the film and stopped supporting her. It was a chaos after Salome for Nazimova.

Yes... she looked like a young woman, moving more or less like a gymnast.
So sexy and good actress, indeed

Yes, this may have been unpopular with the critics. But Salome is an artistic masterpiece. And respectful of Oscar Wilde's play

I wish Balanchine had made a ballet of this.

This really comes closer to a filmed ballet. It was "Made in the USA," but comes closer to Pre-Hitler German Expressionism, before Hitler nearly destroyed German culture.

This was sponsored by the local lgbt community no doubt. Jokes aside, it looks like a moving Barbier illustration!

Too long, needs about 20 minutes trimmed, but wonderfully perverse. Just as Wilde would have wanted.
