Our road band Moxie, was fortunate enough to be playing in a nearby local club in Jan 77, when several Caribou staff came in on Saturday night ( they were recording Spain) and invited us up on Sunday afternoon. Not allowed in the first floor mix room (mixing Chick Corea) but gave us a tour of the Main 2nd floor main studio, got my picture taken behind the Neve, listened in awe as the tech calibrated the control room monitors with the master tape of Chicago's If you leave me now, chills to this day when I hear it, tech kept saying - don't step on any cords - takes forever to find problem, Stanley Clark's bass, Chick's keyboards. Took us up to the 3rd floor with the lounge and Foosball table, pictures outside, finally back in the bus and down the road. A Disneyland experience I'll never forget, thank you Caribou Ranch

It's a truly wild and awe inspiring place. I re-did some plumbing in a few of the buildings not that long ago and the whole time i was there i didn't feel like i was working, it just felt like a privilege to be where so many great artists had been before.

For all the famous, infamous and a few unknowns that visited / recorded up there, It is it's sense of place that inspires.I attended the auction down in Denver, It was great to see the instruments and furnishings etc, but I felt like being at a family funeral. knowing that these pieces of history will now be scattered and hanging on someone's wall, in an office or as an investment to be resold later.. Then a few days later i went up to Caribou and quietly hiked the perimeter hillside since it is now in the hands of Waltons. They have foretold a desire to keep it intact as a family retreat and not develop homesites. It still remains as it was from that golden era: The studio barn, lodge and cabins silently standing, seemingly waiting. It was a peaceful silent moment, yet an ache in my stomach, telling me that this place will never see those vibes again. I sat on a log in sorrow. ....But then strangely, as the breeze slowly blew from nearby high peaks I thought i heard a sweet melody, a fainting call and then................ ..it was gone.

Thanks for that. I was there a couple of times back in the day. Spent allot of time in Nederlands and at the Pioneer Inn. As George sang, All Things Must Pass. Just wonderful knowing you were there though.
I wish Elton would have bought it and donated it to Open Space. (I thought it had been bought by Boulder County and turned into open space.

Thanks again for this wondeful Eulogy.

I delivered the cedar wood used to build the recording studio and other buildings. I would load up at a railroad siding in Louisville and drive the lumber up Boulder Canyon to the ranch. Jim Guercio was a super nice guy who was not pretentious at all.

Hey Johnny C, this is Gary Gartside, one of the original bunkhouse boys, good hearing your voice. Those were the good old days, some day we should write about the juicy stuff at the ranch, or maybe not, Take care old friend.

It's in Nederland, Colorado. It was shot about four years ago to accompany a story about the ranch published on the Rocky Mountain News.

it's all true. i was the pastry chef at caribou way back when. i'd drive my ancient pugeot straight up, with the sunroof wide open to falling snow with the heater and radio blasting. i'd leave boulder after a dance or two at shannon's go, up in that little mountain goat of a car and bake the night away in a big beautiful wood and copper kitchen. i was star struck by the location and the joy of work, and the people, too. jim g. was super, the musicians too. elton sitting on the vast counter thanking for "the best bread ever" the big city band members scared of the vast non-cityness of it all.
sometimes i'd have to wait to go back to boulder in the glowing dawn because there were bears moseying around the trash bins. there were musicians who'd been working all night wandering into the kitchen for a brownie (there was a canister just like the ones for the flour for that little extra ingredient).
makes me glad to have had all those rocky mountain nights.

wonderful to see the ranch again. there was a guy--a dude--who visited all decked out in stylin' cowboy boots and all.
sad for him, this was a belly up to the bar look, but didn't really keep him warm, and without vibram soles you could go over and skate on duck lake.

If you don't mind my asking, where was/is it? I'm familiar with the area and always thought the gated road on the west side of 72 at the horseshoe curve about 4 miles north of Ward was the entrance but I don't see anything on satellite maps. Another reference said it was on Caribou Rd going west out of Nederland towards the old ghost town of Caribou, but again I don't see anything. I know Guercio sold a lot of the property to the county as conservation land but I think a developer bought most of it in 2014. Thanks.

I was lucky to spend a week there playing guitar with Fonda Feingold but mainly driving the Jeep and Snowshoeing to the Continental Divide one day. The food and staff were amazing as was working with Wayne Tarnowski and my friend Leon Pendarvis !

Man, would I have liked to have been at Caribou Ranch when all those big names were recording there in the 1970s! What does the place look like today? What celebrities were the most pleasant to have worked with? An inquiring mind needs to know all about Caribou Ranch!

+RJ L There was a fire above the control room that destroyed that section. Guercio sold it sometime after that.

Coincidence theory #113: this place burned down, 90s artists started tracking in murder sites and former mental hospitals. Last known work to hit the shelves was Dio: the Last In Line
