Dawn had an entry for that. But it kept getting delayed then cancelled at the last minute to one of the several lurches in Covid policy around at the time. She did a virtual race and got a nice selection of prizes from Curly's. In fact the bobble hat on display at this week's parkrun came from that.
Number 8: an injury prevention programme whether it be Pilates, yoga or other strength and conditioning, three or more times a week. If this isn't included a risk is being taken and tips one to seven may well be compromised due to injury! And the older we get the more important it becomes.
Cheers John. So much brilliant advice. Think you covered everything. CONFIDENCE was key to bringing down my own race times. Finding the sweet spot between pushing very hard, but not blowing out was vital. That came with experience. Funny you mention Brass Monkey - it was my 2nd ever Half Marathon in 2017. Ok race but I'm amazed a ballot is necessary. Always thought it was very similar course to Vale Of York Half. Favourite half marathon? English Half was good, as was North London Half with Wembley Stadium finish line. Both of these sadly no longer exist. I know it’s going against popular opinion but I absolutely hate Great North Run. Think it’s a big hype job and nothing special.
Thanks Colin. I totally agree. Brass Monkey is a very good club HM but I don't get the mania surrounding it. And yes GNR is the most overhyped race around. I did it once in 2005 and that was that. Hard to get to. Not enough accommodation locally. Standing around at the start too long. A shame those favourites of yours are no longer on.
John my favourite half Marathon is the North Lincs Half, In March 2023 at age 65 , I ran my fastest time for 11 years of 1.36.43. I've already entered for 2024. Leading up to it I did most of the training you have mentioned except hills ( I really don't like those🤣) It was a flat course anyway. Great content John👍
That's a great time, Kev. Yes I saw entries were open. We had entries last year but Dawn was ill and I was intermittently injured. Wasn't it a Masters qualifier last year?
Great video John & Dawn, excellent time 01:13:00 for half marathon, we’re you doing much cross training when you did the 01:13:00 half? Like swimming, biking & what was your main recovery routine? Thanks Running Brooms 👏👊🏼🥳🌴✅😀🙈
Hi Reece. I'm afraid back then no cross-training. No strength work. No conditioning. If I'd known then what I know now I think I could have been a bit quicker.
I would guess 1. Step up to the marathon. 2. Many big city events with atmosphere. 3. Easier to get into and train for than major marathons. 4. You can have repeated goes to run fast times. 5. For many runners a 70 min to 2 hour race is their sweet spot. What's your take?
Top tips as always. I can relate to the 1:49 first half marathon but can't imagine hitting 1:13 at any point 😂 Very impressive!
Even without the cliffhanger of 'just you wait til point 4...' 😉?
Favourite ever half is the hedgehog half in Lincolnshire. It's organised by Curlys Athletes. I've completed it a few times.

Absolutely agree. It's something I do 3 times per week. Thanks for commenting. I didn't do much at all when I was running 73 mins. Now it's a must.
Great tips. I think the speed intervals and hill work are tough but help a lot. The long hilly runs are a great idea.
Thanks, Richard. I guess like anything worth having, we have to put the work in for it. 🙂
Seville half.....incredibe race
Nice to hear from you Andy. Hope all is well.

I spotted the Adios Pro 2 at Runners Need in a UK 5.5 for £45, a bargain if that's Dawn's size? It does say mens but I'm pretty sure they're unisex.
Thanks Steven. £45 poorer now 😉
Do you know why the Half Marathon is one of most popular races?
I would guess
1. Step up to the marathon.
2. Many big city events with atmosphere.
3. Easier to get into and train for than major marathons.
4. You can have repeated goes to run fast times.
5. For many runners a 70 min to 2 hour race is their sweet spot.
What's your take?
@@tworunningbrooms it has the word Marathon 🙂
54 only a youngster 👍
Hope so...
