  • This tutorial explains the backroll tack (with footswap) in detail. This is a tack of the board with a backroll of the body and a stance chance. This transition is sometimes known as a duck tack. This guide looks at the board control and kite control, as well as mistakes that could easily spoil your duck tack. This video is part of the strapless & directional playlist.

Wowww, very good tutorial, especially the bar position and the corresponding effect on the power... It took me a while to understand that I needed to "depower" the kite while turning and getting the power back after the turn... and also the fact that you make the essential difference between the tack and duck tack... I was happy to share these two videos with our kiting community here in Noth county kiteboarding(near Clearwater- tarpon spring)

Super stoked about the strapless series! Just picked up a surfboard with learning strapless as my Summer goal. Thanks for putting these together!

Strapless is a blast! Just one warning, these folks make it look easy, but they break it down quite nicely. I've been trying this one a while but I think it's the depower I have to work on.

Awesome video as always. More strapless tutorials please ;-) One question about tacks. I have seen two methods: one is the as described (clockwise body rotation for a right carve, back-roll?), the other is with the body rotating in the opposite direction (anti clockwise for a right carve). Would you consider one easier to learn than the other? So far I have failing with the back roll version :-(

Hello Nico, the normal tack and duck tack are about the same. I found the duck tack easier, but that's probably becuase I learnt to do surface backroll transitions on my twintip before. I think that helped with the directional board duck tack. We have both TACK and DUCK TACK videos out now so you can compare. Should have gybe and footswap videos out for next weekend.

Hi, I struggled with the "normal" tack for a long time (always waves here, so that makes it more difficult) and never been able to perform a duck tack. What do you think of the idea to break it up a bit further by changing feet before the transition (going in switch stance) or after, or not at all and ending switch? Any other ideas for pre-exercises?

How about doing a twintip duck tack tutorial? I can’t find one anywhere on line, just a 30 second clip of someone doing one.

Hello Pete, I can do this on a twintip so next time we're filming I'll see if I can get a clip of it.
