  • The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is known as Copper Country. The old Cliff Mine is just one of several areas with tailings that are legally accessible to the public. A great place to explore mineralogy and geology, and of course pulling metallic copper straight out of the rocks... there's nothing more Lithic Metals than that!

Why didn't you climb the tailing pile to the left of the Cliffs? At the top is a red brick mine shaft with a tree growing up, and a small crater to the right that appears to be the top of a stope. Wish I had my camera w/ me...

Up there by rip van Winkle campground along the rail road tracks you can find copper pellets that had fell off the shipping cars carrying the copper.

very kewl. I tried a little detecting in the cliff mine pilings last year and found a few small pieces. the hardest part was getting the wife to carry my bucket back to the vehicle 😆

@@LithicMetals we are hoping we can get back to explore the cliff mines again this summer and also check out any other mines that are open to the public for wandering around, and metal/gem and rock collecting. any advice for a troll from a yooper is always welcomed. we have family in Drummond but are new to exploring the Keweenaw area =)

What do you usually end up doing with the copper ore? Do you extract it or just leave it.
I’m very interested in starting to put copper in my collection.

I generally clean the specimens and enjoy them as is. However, I have indeed used float copper (chunks of copper not encased in matrix) to make a few primitive tools. I've also used it to inquart karat scrap.
