    David Grisson is a giant of knowledge, talent, and a modest genius. What a treat to hear him talk about music and gear. You can feel the commitment and love he has for his art. Every example he played is dripping with feel and musicality. I'm a little late to the game, but I'm now a huge fan.

  • @frankadams4586
    @frankadams4586 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You can't go wrong following ANY of David's tone tips, that's for sure. I've got two really early DGT's that I love and for me just about all tone roads lead back to the DGT. The personality of that guitar really comes through all my different amps. Whether I'm playing my vintage Fender and Vox amps or newer Bad Cat amps, the DGT speaks well with each of them. The guitar has a way of driving each amp, tube and speaker combination in a really musical way. The guitar itself has a CRAZY amount of tonal options on tap. Just rolling the volume knob up or down alone gives you a world of tonal possibilities. If you have a nice, responsive tube amp and a quality overdrive pedal or two, add the DGT if you don't have one. David is cool and does not push his sig model on you, but treat yourself and just play one. It's just my opinion but I think the "feel" of the guitar has a massive influence on your overall tone. If the guitar plays effortlessly, stays in tune like a champ and feels good in your hands you are naturally going to play better - which is going to make you SOUND better. So, sell two or three guitars and make your wife happy. After you buy a DGT, you'll be happy and you'll find that the DGT easily replaces the guitars you sold. Sorry to write a book..........but.......I'm hoping that my experience might save you some $ in the long run.

    I'm about a year behind, here, but I picked up a Grissom pedal from Brad's Reverb site back in December of 2020, and it's taken me this long to actually fall in love with it. The funny thing is that I was running loud and clean for years, mostly playing on R&B/Motown/funk gigs, which is typically inhospitable for big Marshall tone, but the addition of the Grissom has made me rethink my old tubescreamery ways. You are EXACTLY right, there are harmonics and transient tones that don't emerge without a little gain from the amp - and honestly, the pedal is best suited to that. (Gain @ noon, volume 10:00, contour 4:00.)
    So you've indirectly had a pretty profound (and positive,) impact on my playing, sir. Thanks very much!

    I follow the same approach as David. I remember some years back (20-25 years ago) where every sound I had live came from one button or another on the floor. How liberating it was to rediscover the controls on my guitar and scale back to just a couple of pedals (drive, boost, maybe delay). It. Just. Works.

    I have one of these PRS DG amps with the matching 2x12 cabinet with V30's. It's really amazing how well it responds to rolling back the guitar volume. Even in boost mode just roll back the guitar volume and it cleans up with a really full, round clean tone. Much more body to the clean tone than any Fender I have ever owned. The on board reverb is perfect. Roll the volume back up and it just sings. I don't even use an overdrive or boost pedal with it when I play it. Don't really need one.

    I just bought an XTS Tom Buckovac modded Boss GE-7 EQ and that pedal has been a huge game changer for being able to control midrange where the guitar loves to be. It also comps for flubby speakers, old strings, and pickups that are not cutting through by themselves. I just wondered if you ever tried one of those pedals? Your tone and sounds are super sweet. This pedal for me, is like sculpting and carving out the best mids to help an anemic guitar, or flubby speaker, and boost it to make the lead tone stand up in the mix. Barry O’Neal does great things to simplify a pedal board, but this pedal is my game changer. You may have already tried one. Just curious.

    Thanks David. Very inspiring. I saw some TH-cam videos with you and Eric Johnson playing. I notice that your tonal palettes overlap a bit, esp when he plays humbucking guitars. However the approach to obtaining those tones and the philosophy behind that seems very different. I like your approach more these days of keeping things simple and mining the guitar/amp relationship as much as possible for tones. Thanks again!

    David, I'm a fellow tone freak in Michigan. I now being a reconing guy of speaker in south eastern Detroit area. Have my skills honed in reconing celestion speakers. I'm a fan on G12M65's. They are like vintage greenback mids. With tighter sound using 4" breathable dust cap. To stabilize cone and high spl levels. Also for efficient greenback mids. I can recone G12M with lightweight nomax/paper 16 ohm 25 watt voice coil. But upgrading to 4 inch dust cap. To tighten up sound when pushed instead to speaker breakup. And still 100 watt power handling in 4X12.

  • @drdrums1

    In tone chasing I've been increasingly stripping away effects. With my DSL40 (turns out the Marshall sound is what I dig) I find I can get the tones in my head just going straight into the amp, and running a little slap back delay through the effects loop, and that's it. I switch the DSL40 between crunch and OD1 for clean and lead tones, EQ on the amp to boost the mids, and everything else is in the guitar volume control. This is to say nothing of moving my right hand around to vary the tone with where I pluck.

    Much appreciated, thank you. It's interesting how similar your approach to tone shaping is to that of Matt Schofield, and Jeff McErlain, two guys who also put a lot attention into their tone. I use a Helix, but follow a lot of the same approach you describe here to get similar tones. One thing I keep hearing from you pros is to keep the brightness under control. Have to think about that some more. As we setup our tones, having that bright crispy Fender sparkle is great. But when you turn it up in the mix, it's often too much.

    Vintage Arion pedals from the 80’s are great pedals. Plastic housing aside, the circuits are very good. I still like using my old arion distortion ( with the gain rolled off combined with an eq pedal for some grit. I also have a analog stereo delay from the same period that is fantastic. Those have gained a bit of a cult following. “ The cult of the sad-1”😉
