A friend just shared this with me! Too much fun seeing your REACTION to Boogie Fever! It’s definitely an ear worm! They sound like the Jacksons because the infamous Freddie Perrin who wrote so many of the Jackson’s hits also wrote Boogie Fever and Hot Line for The Sylvers! The oldest 4 siblings started out as The Little Angels and toured the world with Ray Charles in the early 60s. Their Creole mother, Shirley Mae Wyble Sylvers was a trained opera singer and played nothing but classical music in the house, while their father, Leon Frank Sylvers, grew up with the richness of the Memphis sound. Their voices were as real as their fros! The secret to the perfect fro… let someone else pat & shape it for you! If you’re looking in a mirror you’re not going to get that perfect sphere! On the question of who came first… they were really different yet similar and family friends! In 1976 when Boogie Fever was a #1.hit, The Sylvers opened for The Jacksons on tour! With the brothers & sisters on stage, and the Sylvers siblings are all fairly tall, along with the ridiculous afros…. they stole the crowd and the Jacksons couldn’t get the crowd back - so The Sylvers were sent home after the 2nd show. Their music stop getting played as widely and their manager sat on their contract and told anyone who let them on their stage that they would be sued. The Motown Machine was in full effect! Oldest brother Leon went on to write so many of the hits of the 80s with Solar Records. He produced music for Shalamar, The Whispers, Midnight Star, Janet Jackson, the list goes on! He also mentored so many great producers, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley, Pharrell Williams (Pharrell included Boogie Fever on his Despicable Me soundtrack). The Sylvers are a Super talented & loving family! 🙏🏾💜
The Sylvers were actually named a different band (made up of the older kids, they were from CA and were out in the mid 60s as The Little Angels), you can find appearances on mid 60s tv shows (before the Jackson 5). The father and wife divorced in the late 60s and they didn't have a group for a few years (when the Jackson 5 rose to popularity. They regrouped with the younger siblings and with their single mother's blessing recorded as The Sylvers in the early 70s, then had a couple huge hits in the mid 70s. Boogie Fever and Hotline and High School Dance were some of their biggest hits. Hotline was a great tune as well. For those big hits they were produced with a guy who produced the Jackson 5 as well. They did sound like them though. Loved this song, when it was out I thought it was the Jackson 5 until they said the name of the group.
The Sylvers sing five part harmonies. The Jackson 5 came out in 1968 the Sylvers debut album came out in 1971 but the older siblings had been performing since 1958. The oldest brother Leon Sylvers went on to produce hits for the Whispers, Shalamar, and Lakeside.
The Bump was an actual dance back in the day where one person would be swinging their hips in opposing directions so their hips would bump together. Sometimes that could end up knocking somebody flying, lol.
They were actually before the Jacksons, but not as you see them on the MNS. The 4 older siblings (Olympia, Leon, Charmaine and James) were known as The Little Angels. There are a few songs on here with the older siblings singing. The Gopher Song, Says You and an appearance on the Danny Thomas show and the whole family on Groucho Marx's game show singing The Gopher song live.
Yes. Yes. 1976 200 yr bday for our country. Also, I graduated that year. I loved disco, too. Friday night's it was either going out clubbing & cruising or we were at the skating rink (roller skating, not roller blading).
Hey Jamel. The Jackson 5's first hit was in late 1969, though they started a few years before that. The Sylvers charted as an act in the 70's. But like the Jacksons, they were also a family group--all brothers and sisters. You should also check out another one of their pop chart hits, "Hot Line". ☮✌🏽 out!

This was a super hot track in 1976 when I was in college. The youngest member of the group, Foster Sylvers, recorded and had success as a solo artist as well. Yes, they were all brothers and sisters. There is a clip on TH-cam (you have to search for it) of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvers appearing on the "You Bet Your Life" game show with host Groucho Marx. The oldest children (very young at that time in the 60's) appeared on the show. I met Foster a couple of years ago here in LA and you could not meet a nicer person. He was struggling a little bit at that time, but he was creating new music and looking for a new record company. I recall that some of the family members got together and performed at The Taste Of Soul event a couple of years ago (pre-Covid shutdown). It is held on Crenshaw Boulevard every October. I wish Foster all the best and hope the family is still able to perform when they can.
They were on “You Bet Your Life,” Groucho Marx’s show. This was when the kids were little and the last one was on the way. They perform for Groucho and you can see how talented they all are…
The Sylvers were on TV first. Several of the older siblings, as young kids, performed as The Little Angels, and appeared on Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" game show, and others, in the early-mid '60s. But, as The Sylvers, they didn't become hit makers until the early-mid '70s, after the Jackson 5 were already super famous.
Boogie Nights also.....in 76 Michael was 17 or 18 and knee deep in the Jackson 5...but this kid definately sounds like a young Michael...thx for this reaction n the memories!
The Sylvers started out as The Little Angels. They worked hard performing all over. They changed their name and continued plugging away until the industry started to notice. They signed with MGM, and later signed with Capitol and got hooked up with Freddie Perren, who also produced the Jackson Five. They recorded this song and off they went!

The Jackson 5 had their first hit in 1969 when Michael was 11, "I Want You Back" 2nd hit song "ABC" released in 1970. "The Love You Save" also released in 1970.
The Sylvers topped the Jackson’s in 1972 with their first #1 hit “Wish that I could talk to you” Watch it on TH-cam. Very talented and aesthetically beautiful to watch ,which is why Joe Jackson and Berry Gordy kicked them off of their tour. Had things been fair…………

The Sylvers were a singing family before the Jackson. Check them out on the Groucho Mark's show, I think they were called the little Angel's. Also, Edmond Sylvers was the voice of Marlon on the J5 cartoon.

The oldest of the Sylvers was Leon in the far left. He started his own group called Dynasty in '79/'80. They were based in Los Angeles. Leon has been a big time record producer the past 40 years with many singers.
Michael Jackson was 18 when The Sylvers did this song which would make him around the age of The lead singer of The Sylvers. The Jackson Five came out years before these guys.
Thanks Jamal, for doing "Boogie Fever", I had requested it awhile back.. Jackson 5 came way first with the hits in the early 70's(ABC, Never Can Say Goodbye, I Want You Back, etc..). From the mid 70's era, check out "Dancing Machine", when Michael introduced The Robot, or the great Ballad/rocker, "I Am Love", for Jackson 5. Still requesting Midnight Specials.. Ohio Players epic performance of "Fire".. Thank you.
The Jackson's first. They had a cartoon series called The Jackson 5ive which started in 1971. Obviously, before that they were already performing with their look and dancing. I also like their song Hotline. Takin me back to the days before cell phones when we were all land lines, borrowing your neighbor's phone to make business calls or to call your girl because your family couldn't afford a phone service in your own house.
I can't challenge your chair dancing skills. It has been a long time since I heard this one. Back when it first came out, I was too young. Later on, almost all Disco made me gag. Now, as I've gotten older, I've realized that there were good Disco songs, and this is definitely one of the Classic Tunes from Back in the Day!
There were some amazing fros back in the day....I miss them. Everyone walked around with the Afro Combs aka Picks in their back pocket....even white or hispanic folks with curly hair. Those were the days!😁.
One of my all time favorite songs, this came out when I was 12 and I have always lived it. Stephen King used lyrics from this in his book The Stand along with Don't Fear the Reaper.
Oh my goodness I have wished for you to go down the magic super talented harmonious rabbit hole that is the Sylvers! please explore this family, there music and their story but more than anything listen to the music Jamel and definitely do "Forever yours" and ONLY ONE CAN WIN"!

I also like their song Hotline. Takin me back to the days before cell phones when we were all land lines, borrowing your neighbor's phone to make business calls or to call your girl because your family couldn't afford a phone service in your own house.
LOVE THIS!! It was my first LP as a kid!
So many memories 😂. Good Time's
Music was so fun in the 70's!!!
I kept waiting for the wig!!!! ✌🏻💜✌🏻
Jamel the Sylvers are R/B Soul family out of Watts. In the earlier they performed under the of the Little Angels and four Little Angels
I think they moved in up to Palos Verdes when they started making money.
I saw an old episode of a show hosted by Groucho Marx in which they performed. The segment also showed their parents.
Thank you! The oldest four were performing in the late 50 so they were indeed BEFORE the Jacksons.
The youngest member of the sylvers family is Foster Sylvers. The Sylvers came second a few years after the Jackson 5.
There were some amazing fros back in the day....I miss them. Everyone walked around with the Afro Combs aka Picks in their back pocket....even white or hispanic folks with curly hair. Those were the days!😁.
Man!
This brought back memories!
Remember that dance called The Bus Stop?
My class danced to this in the 5th grade on parents' night. What a fun song

One of my all time favorite songs, this came out when I was 12 and I have always lived it. Stephen King used lyrics from this in his book The Stand along with Don't Fear the Reaper.
Sounding and looking TIGHT!
Thanks so much Jamel I'd forgotten this one. made me smile all afternoon
One of my first 45 records. The flip side was Hotline.
I used to love dancing to this one and the high voice was the best!
Wow, I had a smile from ear to ear listening to this. It’s flat out a fun song.
How about "Stoned Love" by The Supremes? It's after Diana Ross left but it went to #1 and it's one of there best.
Yes!
Oh my goodness I have wished for you to go down the magic super talented harmonious rabbit hole that is the Sylvers! please explore this family, there music and their story but more than anything listen to the music Jamel and definitely do "Forever yours" and ONLY ONE CAN WIN"!
I haven’t heard this in a long time! Always loved this song
Dig every thing about that. The song, the costumes, the dancing, everything!! Very polished and entertaining! Enjoyed that. Full of energy! Love it!

Jamel I miss your afro wig. Definitely needed it for this one.
Great summer jam! Those were the days!
