3:10 Looks like some exceptional training. It has been almost a decade & a half since I was physically last on this military training area located on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, as I do recall Muana Kea is situated on a northeastern azimuth from the training area. You can't miss this mountain, as the top houses 13 Observatories, in addition to being one of the fewest places which snow will fall on any of the islands within the Hawaiian Islands, as the summit is over 13,700 feet above sea level. 🍻👏🏻🍻

Tallest mountain in the world as measured from the base (sea floor)!

The Nam era 81 rounds could kill out to 25 meters and wound out to 50. Mortars will never be replaced. They drop straight down over hills and small mountains, buildings, etc. A good A gunner in 60mm can put a lot of them in the air before the first lands. I was 0341 in Nam, 60 mm, 1967-68.

Going through 11C training on 81 at Ft. Benning in ‘79, they gave us 10 cases of HE short that had 1944 date stamps on it. They were so old the cheese packs were almost fused together. Fortunately all rounds cleared the tube but only about 40% detonated on target. EOD was not happy about having to go down range and clean up the mess.

In the 70’s, If you lost or damaged the one pair of foam earplugs that were issued, then you used cigarette butts for hearing protection

I always made sure my hand that dropped the round in the tube touched the ground before the round hit the firing pin.

Our 80 bums dropped rounds on us during a training op at CAX.
