  • Autism university are two words that can scare some people (me included). These are the exact 5 hacks I used to be successful at university on the autism spectrum.
University can be super difficult, overwhelming and confusing for people on the autism spectrum. This is why I have created this five simple yet affective strategy is for you to implement in your life if you are attending studies.
1 Record Lectures (audio & video)
Recording the audio and video of a lecture will help you so much in the long run so you can always look back and refer to that lecture.
    2 Use Dictation Software
Using dictation software to help create written documents from audio lectures is an amazing way to create notes for people who have difficulty with this area.
    3 Labelling Handouts And Papers
Labelling all handout on paper with the date and a page number every single day will help you with organising your papers in the best way possible
    4 Buddy Up
Having a buddy who always looks out for you and can help you with situations whilst you’re in university is always a good idea having someone you can rely on and trust is so valuable.
    5 Check Lecture Calendar
Always check your lecture timetable and calendars the night before attending class so you know if any changes have been made during the day previously that will affect the calendar that you were used to.

I'm currently at uni, going into second year later this year. I'm not diagnosed (but currently seeking a diagnosis for autism and adhd). I have struggled so bad with socialising and it's been extremely exhausting. Motivation has been an extreme issue as well and I can't get the help I need because I'm not formally diagnosed:(

I always make sure there is a disability resource center on campus or in the student center. That is where i made a bunch of friends and got the perks to meet my needs. These safe spaces are fairly new and I attended CC(Community College) from 2012-2014. I really suggest new students with AS to seek these opportunities when attending. College in the US costs alot of money I know on Dan's end it's different.

I kinda regret having to do everything the mainstream way in university. My professors were generally wonderful people and taught well, but I could have used more emotional support throughout my 6 years of undergraduate and upper division studies (I’m a community college to uni transfer who had to take an additional two years at uni.) The idea of having to do college level work stressed me out and had to split down my semester classes to a minimum of 3-4 classes tops. My mom sometimes pushed me to take 3 different art studio classes at once and most art professors highly argue against it so I avoided it. The workload outside of class increases that way. The amount it takes to finish anything is always ambiguous so it was always frustrating for me to finish assignments. I could finish them all but the amount of time I need is never clear so I pulled a couple of all nighters just to get homework and projects done. At this rate I don’t want to move up to masters level courses/degree because it’s too exhausting for me.

I have already graduated university, having a degree in mechatronics, and a master in physics, even went to CERN for an internship. I recently found out that I have Asperger's Syndrome, my IQ is really high (115 - 140), my interest are not that restrictive, and I love what I do, so being perfectionist, very obsessive, and with the ability of hyperconcentration it's not hard to imagine that I excelled at most subjects. My main struggles as an undergraduate student were social anxiety, it took me a year and a half to feel accepted by my classmates and not to have breakdowns during classes, or when doing teamwork, or by interacting with them. As an aspie, is easy to get anxious, so that's another huge problem (that I certainly used as a tool) that I had. I got into extra projects because that helped me to relax, learn more (I really enjoy learning) and even better: when it came to those projects, I could work solo, or at least do my part and not interacting with the rest of the team while working. From the tips that you mentioned, I didn't have to resort to anything like that, as I trained myself to write fast, and I was able to take notes, but sometimes later on the day I had to look for more information in a video or something, as I understood that my main way of learning is by following examples with precise instructions, then practicing and applying what i was studying (those extra projects helped a lot, I dedicated less time to homework, but I was learning more and it showed), and the las two tools are quite important. I had a buddy there for sometime, but he dropped out not long after getting to know each other, and as for the last hack, well I did that every morning, but as in that university you don't get to choose subjects or even your schedule, I just had to move along with the rest of the class.

      @rafaelnarcio9997 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BeautyByJuliette14 the best of wishes, I'm sure you'll excel at what you do. And well, there are a lot of people in physics who have either ASD, ADD, Anxiety Disorder, Schizofrenia, Depression, OCD, etc. I know that after 3 years of internships at a physics school and then getting my master in physics there. And keep on using your Asperger's symptoms as a tool to further your plans and being sucessful. As for me, during my master studies I did a lot of data analysis to characterize a particle detector (using ROOT), but I also did the mechanical design of the detector, simulated it using geant4, did the experimental setup, and carried out the experiments. During my PhD I will work on the instrumentation system for that same detector, I'll be using FPGAs, and doing some electronic design. So I'll be using VHDL a lot, which means I'll still be programming, but know for a different aspect of the same project, so I guess that makes me a bit of a computer scientist, besides of an experimental particle physics and an engineer.

I just finished my fourth semester at college (USA) and did not do well. I failed every class I took last semester. Looking back, I think, “I should have done better, why didn’t I do more?” But then I also have to remember to be kind to myself. I didn’t know what was going on with me. I knew about my anxiety and depression, but not autism. I’m just figuring out now what all of this might mean for me and how I can better help myself. Though I didn’t do well in classes, I learned a lot about myself and grew as a person. I also started to take care of myself more by working out and eating better.
Thanks for this video! I look forward to going back to classes and trying these out!

6 weeks away from getting my master's. I would say sensory processing issues living in halls and student houses was the hardest coz you are friends with people but they wake you up. Tip: use an organiser for important documents where sections are labelled e.g. passport, bank statement for ID, council tax exemption etc. That way you can always find them. Also maintaining professional relationship with tutor and not oversharing when they ask what seems like a personal question and just answering blindly without thinking what they will think of the answer. Good luck guys, uni is worth it if stressful

I'm going to university now, but started my higher education at a community college. This really helped me adjust to what the course workload was going to be like in college and focus on getting my gen ed courses out of the way early on. I needed to do things that way since there was no way I was going to be accepted into university right out of high school. I went into community college needing to take remedial math courses before I could finally fulfill my college math credit. But yeah I'm overall really happy I did things that way since I can now basically just focus on courses that actually pertain to my major in university. I would definitely recommend this for other students who had problems in high school whether it was because of a disability or something else. Also if you have a disability, definitely contact the disability center at your school and request accommodations. If note taking during lectures is a problem for you there may be accommodations you can get to help with that, and I believe you can also ask for extended deadlines for assignments and extended test taking time or ask to take tests in a different environment from the other students if needed. I get extended time on tests and am allowed to take them in a separate environment at my school.

I have three post-graduate qualifications. I could have had another masters and doctorate but the one thing I really suck at is executive functioning when there isn't a deadline. All my qualifications had deadlines all the way through; the four I didn't continue with was because "setting my own end date" just didn't work and completely overwhelmed me. I'd say if this is you too, ask your course leader to set you deadlines. It's possibly an aspie "must follow rules" thing? Plus it never occurred to me to ask another student for help - I was so in my own bubble, even 10 years ago when I was a mature student, so that one is definitely a great hack.

Uni is hard but I'm glad I am studying a special interest or I would have probably quit by now! My bachelors was hard enough, a Masters is considerably harder! I'm ADHD/autistic so it was always gonna be hard but luckily I can get accomdations for coursework. I am studying a Masters of Counselling, which is great in some ways, a perfect fit...except for the fact my social skills suck and expressing emotions is difficult enough my own way, and the neurotypical way has to be done too. Its the practical bits thats killing me at the moment, like doing a mock session with a client and doing therapy. Good thing I don't know when to give up and when to stop!

Here rn because my biggest frustration is not understanding the way I’m being taught, and when I try to seek understanding, my TAs and Professors don’t understand what I am asking/what I am confused about and it just makes me feel small and slow and stupid and like I’m not supposed to be here, and so I don’t ask, and I fall behind. It sucks because I have so much freaking passion for what I want to do, like a level of passion so many other lack I have a purpose and a big thing I’m striving towards and professors who act all like “you’re the one with accommodations, right?” Are really making me question diverting off course.

I was the valedictorian of my high school class but my dream job is to work in a small shop instead of going to university.
My problem isn't university itself, if I could study forever I'd be fine. But all university courses I've found lead to jobs that I can't handle due to sensory overload and fatigue. 😬

Make sure to study something that doesn't include a bunch of group assignments! I'm studying audio engineering and my assignments require me find and talk to musicians at my campus, to record them. I need to make sure to book a room and a bunch of equipment and it's all just overwhelming. I'm running late on one of these assignments right now. I don't have anyone to ask for help except my professors who just think I'm lazy, so I might have to drop out. Obviously, this career will be too tough for me. University is only a backup plan, anyway.

I didn't record the lectures, my notes are messy, I have no clue what to learn and where to start, and I'm just horrible at organizing myself... which I need to now.

Wow going to uni is so much easier for aspies, etc these days. I was considered special needs but no one knew what the heck my issue was. There were no iphones, pcs n I was in a competitive program n no one shared. I learned to take intricate notes, went during professor hours n asked questions n sometime pleaded for mercy! I was allowed to take tests seperate n with extended time. Tutors didn't work for me, they just stressed me out.

I go to the University of Chichester and I'm studying politics and contemporary history, I'm in my first year.
I got a form before I started that all my lecturers had to read and it says some stuff about me - including my name and pronouns because I'm also trans - and it says what I find difficult, what I need in my exams (I get 25% extra time and I type!), they're more understanding when I need a deadline extension, they're more understanding when I do presentations, they don't pick on me in class unless I volunteer and they offer me 1:1 Microsoft teams meetings whenever I need them so I don't have to ask questions in class. I'm also mask exempt (pandemic) so they gave me a free disability lanyard and a special sticker recognised by all the staff on my ID so I can't get told off. I also have less reading, I only have to read the core texts (so they usually slim it from 5 chapters to 3). I'm now student ambassador for my whole course and I was just 2% off a first in my first assignment! :)

Now I want to start on a PhD program... it would be 5 crazy years.
It is super nice that you were able to video your classes, did you need a special permission to do it? I am afraid that some teachers would feel uncomfortable if I make a video of their classes.
